The Dominican Republic-- After the Caudillos
The Dominican Republic played a major role in the early history of NACLA, and it is therefore fitting that the country be re-examined in one of NACLA\u27s thirtieth anniversary issues. It was largely in response to the 1965 U.S. invasion and occupation of the island that a group of academics, clergy and radical activists organized a 1966 conference called the North American Congress on Latin America. The congress stayed together beyond the conference, and in February, 1967, began publishing the NACLA Newsletter, which evolved into today\u27s NACLA Report on the Americas
Dynamics of topological solitons in two-dimensional ferromagnets
Dynamical topological solitons are studied in classical two-dimensional
Heisenberg easy-axis ferromagnets. The properties of such solitons are treated
both analytically in the continuum limit and numerically by spin dynamics
simulations of the discrete system. Excitation of internal mode causes orbital

Confinement from new global defect structures
We investigate confinement from new global defect structures in three spatial
dimensions. The global defects arise in models described by a single real
scalar field, governed by special scalar potentials. They appear as
electrically, magnetically or dyonically charged structures. We show that they
induce confinement, when they are solutions of effective QCD-like field
theories in which the vacua are regarded as color dielectric media with an
anti-screening property. As expected, in three spatial dimensions the
monopole-like global defects generate the Coulomb potential as part of several
