Real-time precipitation suppression in video streams

    Get PDF
In surveillance cameras rain and snow can introduce an unwelcome noise to the video stream. The resulting effect of the rain becomes bright streaks in the frames of the video. These streaks can disturb human viewers and image processing algorithms. Rain streaks can be hard to detect and remove as they are a very dynamic phenomenon dependent on camera settings and weather conditions. This thesis aims to research some already invented rain removal algorithms and compare and evaluate them. Surveillance cameras supply video in real-time so it is not possible to access the whole video and perform heavy computations relying on information from the future. Qualities such as level of streak suppression and time required to perform necessary calculations are weighed against each other

Digital storytelling for transformative global citizenship education

    Get PDF
This article explores how digital storytelling offers the potential to support transformative global citizenship education (TGCE) through a case study of the Bridges to Understanding program that connected middle and high school students globally using digital storytelling. Drawing on a TGCE framework, this research project probed the curriculum and digital stories using a multimodal critical discourse analysis. The findings of this study showed that digital storytelling, as integrated into the curriculum, enhanced student engagement with non-mainstream perspectives and self-reflection. However, the core elements of discussing controversial issues, analyzing systemic causes/impacts of global problems, and determining collective action responses required critical pedagogical practices beyond those embedded within the digital storytelling curriculum

Key Management Techniques for Wireless Mesh Network

    Get PDF
Key management is one of the most important tasks in wireless mesh network. This service is responsible for key generation, distribution, and key exchange in a cryptography-based system. Due to the shared nature of WMNs and absence of globally trusted central authority, key management becomes more challenging. This chapter introduces several key management methods that can address these challenges. The fundamental approach is the secret sharing scheme created by A. Shamir, which effectively distributes keys to all participants’ network. Based on Shamir’s scheme, many authors proposed other algorithms to secure the communication channel in such a way that adversary cannot steal any information about the secret. In addition, in this chapter, a new secret sharing method using real-time synchronization among transceiver devices is presented. In this method, each node generates its key depending on its physical information and the real-time clock. Therefore, public and private keys can be managed efficiently for data encryption and prevent several external attacks to WMNs. A specific protocol is proposed to secure keys while transferring between devices to prevent internal attacks

Buckling is a subject that has been discussed for a long time, however, it still be studied and developed due to its practicality. The following article introduces two methods that are used to solve the problems involving buckling of the beam, shell and solid with an I shape cross-section having different cases of boundary load. The theory which is used in this article is Euler's formula and Eurocode 3 standard. The analytical results by ANSYS commercial software are compared with the theoretical results and results from Eurocode 3 standard. The authors based on the reliability of the calculating results to simulate buckling of the industrial factory model with different cases of load conditions. The simulating results show a general view of buckling cases

Extended Model for Integrating Culture into Teaching EFL: A Context of Vietnam

    Get PDF
Intercultural competence (IC) has gained a better positionality in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education in Vietnam to enable young people to become effective global citizens. Accordingly, the development of comprehensive IC is considered to be an officially stated objective of the reformed EFL curriculum, and a great body of intercultural issues reflecting the cultural diversity of countries has been added to the English course books of the upper secondary level. To help EFL teachers with the exploitation of the coursebooks, this perspective paper aims to propose a model for Intercultural Language Learning and Teaching (IcLLT) to shed light on how to integrate culture into teaching EFL in a Vietnamese pedagogical teaching context. This model can be a valuable guideline for EFL teachers to go beyond the language skill-based lesson in order to promote learners’ intercultural communicative competence

    Hybrid Beamforming for dual-polarized antenna

    Get PDF
International audienceRecently, dual-polarized antenna has attracted strong attention in Millimeter wave (mmWave) systems. It provides an additional degree-of-freedom in wireless communication, yielding higher throughput. Nowadays, with the development of antenna technology, dual-polarized large scale antenna arrays can be realized inexpensively. However, several challenges must be addressed when using dual-polarized antennas in practical transmission such as mobile phone rotation and non-ideal polarization isolation. We address these challenges in the frame of dual-polarized hybrid beamformers. In this paper, we analyze the performance of dual-polarized beamforming based on two popular techniques: Beam steering and Orthogonal Matching Pursuit. Three categories of dual-polarized beam steering are analyzed : (1) same ray : the two polarizations are sent on the same ray, (2) different ray-same polarization : the two polarizations are sent on different pathes, and the receiver uses the same polarization as the emitter, (3) different ray-different polarization : the receiver uses the orthogonal polarization w.r.t. the emitter. An algorithm to choose the rays and polarizations to use, taking the mobile rotation into account, is also developed. Moreover, we develop a hybrid beamforming algorithm inspired by Orthogonal Matching Pursuit that approaches the fully digital beamforming data-rate and outperforms beam steering. Its developed version-Orthogonal based Matching Pursuit-is also introduced to reduce the computational complexity and overcome the unavailability of the Angle of Arrival

Autonomous responsibilities, abilities and behaviours: An appraisal of English-majored students

    Get PDF
Learner autonomy has become the prevailing theme of language education for nearly four past decades, especially its three constructs such as responsibilities, abilities and behaviors. Thus, the current study embraced salient traits of a survey research design to scrutinize these constructs as appraised by the Vietnamese tertiary learners. The study recruited the participation of 80 English-majored students at Hung Vuong University, Vietnam. Their appraisal was elucidated by a quantitative instrument, that is, a 28-item questionnaire whose descriptive statistics were yielded by SPSS 22.0. The study found that a greater proportion of the informants ultimately recognized their autonomous responsibilities, acknowledged their autonomous abilities, and estimated some autonomous behaviors both inside and outside the classroom. Brief conclusion was made at the end of the paper

Differential gene expression of bone anabolic factors and trabecular bone architectural changes in the proximal femoral shaft of primary hip osteoarthritis patients

Previous studies have shown a generalised increase in bone mass in patients with osteoarthritis (OA). Using molecular histomorphometry, this study examined the in vivo expression of mRNA encoding bone anabolic factors and collagen type I genes (COL1A1, COL1A2) in human OA and non-OA bone. Bone samples were obtained from the intertrochanteric (IT) region of the proximal femur, a skeletal site distal to the active site of disease, from individuals with hip OA at joint replacement surgery and from autopsy controls. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed elevated mRNA expression levels of alkaline phosphatase (p < 0.002), osteocalcin (OCN) (p < 0.0001), osteopontin (p < 0.05), COL1A1 (p < 0.0001), and COL1A2 (p < 0.002) in OA bone compared to control, suggesting possible increases in osteoblastic biosynthetic activity and/or bone turnover at the IT region in OA. Interestingly, the ratio of COL1A1/COL1A2 mRNA was almost twofold greater in OA bone compared to control (p < 0.001), suggesting the potential presence of collagen type I homotrimer at the distal site. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I, IGF-II, and transforming growth factor-β1 mRNA levels were similar between OA and control bone. Bone histomorphometric analysis indicated that OA IT bone had increased surface density of bone (p < 0.0003), increased trabecular number (Tb.N) (p < 0.0003), and decreased trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) (p < 0.0001) compared to control bone. When the molecular and histomorphometric data were plotted, positive associations were observed in the controls for OCN/glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) versus bone tissue volume (r = 0.82, p < 0.0007) and OCN/GAPDH versus Tb.N (r = 0.56, p < 0.05) and a negative association was observed for OCN/GAPDH versus Tb.Sp (r = -0.64, p < 0.02). These relationships were not evident in trabecular bone from patients with OA, suggesting that bone regulatory processes leading to particular trabecular structures may be altered in this disease. The finding of differential gene expression, as well as architectural changes and differences in molecular histomorphometric associations between OA and controls, at a skeletal site distal to the active site of joint degeneration supports the concept of generalised involvement of bone in the pathogenesis of OA
