The stringy nature of the 2d type-0A black hole
We investigate the thermodynamics of the RR charged two-dimensional type-0A
black hole background at finite temperature, and compare with known 0A matrix
model results. It has been claimed that there is a disagreement for the free
energy between the spacetime and the dual matrix model. Here we find that this
discrepancy is sensitive to how the cutoff is implemented on the spacetime
side. In particular, the disagreement is resolved once we put the cutoff at a
fixed distance away from the horizon, as opposed to a fixed position in space.
Furthermore, the mass and the entropy of the black hole itself add up to an
analytic contribution to the free energy, which is precisely reproduced by the
0A matrix model. We also use results from the 0A matrix model to predict the
next to leading order contribution to the entropy of the black hole. Finally,
we note that the black hole is characterized by a Hagedorn growth in its
density of states below the Hagedorn temperature. This, together with other

Study of heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si in high-purity Al-Si alloys with Sr addition

The master-alloy was melt-spun resulting in the production of thin ribbons. The Al matrix of the ribbons contained entrained Al-Si eutectic droplets that were subsequently investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermodynamic calculations, and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to examine the effect of the Sr and P additions on eutectic undercoolings and nucleation phenomenon. Results indicate that, unlike P, Sr does not promote nucleation. Increasing Sr additions depressed the eutectic nucleation temperature. This may be a result of the formation of a Sr phase that could consume or detrimentally affect potent AlP nucleation sites.This work is financially supported by the

A Systematic Analysis of the Lepton Polarization Asymmetries in the Rare B Decay, B -> X_s\tau^+\tau^-
The most general model-independent analysis of the lepton polarization
asymmetries in the rare B decay, \Bstt, is presented. We present the
longitudinal, normal and transverse polarization asymmetries for the
and , and combinations of them, as functions of the Wilson coefficients
of twelve independent four-Fermi interactions, ten of them local and two
nonlocal. These procedures will tell us which type of operators contributes to
the process. And it will be very useful to pin down new physics systematically,
once we have the experimental data with high statistics and a deviation from

Topology of the ground state of two interacting Bose-Einstein condensates
We investigate the spatial patterns of the ground state of two interacting
Bose-Einstein condensates. We consider the general case of two different atomic
species (with different mass and in different hyperfine states) trapped in a
magnetic potential whose eigenaxes can be tilted with respect to the vertical
direction, giving rise to a non trivial gravitational sag. Despite the
complicated geometry, we show that within the Thomas-Fermi approximations and
upon appropriate coordinate transformations, the equations for the density
distributions can be put in a very simple form. Starting from this expressions
we give explicit rules to classify the different spatial topologies which can
be produced, and we discuss how the behavior of the system is influenced by the
inter-atomic scattering length. We also compare explicit examples with the full

The usefulness of serum adenosine deaminase 2 (ADA2) activity in adults for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis
AbstractRapid diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis remains an obstacle for therapy of tuberculosis (TB). Adenosine deaminase isoform 2 (ADA2) is produced by activated macrophages and has been used for diagnosis of TB from extra-pulmonary sites. However, few studies adequately address whether serum ADA2 activity is useful for diagnosis of active pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). We prospectively measured serum ADA2 activity in 110 patients with pulmonary disease (65 cases with active PTB and 45 cases with other respiratory diseases) and 78 healthy volunteers (eight with tuberculin skin test positive). The serum ADA2 for the diagnosis of PTB had the sensitivity of 36·9%, the specificity of 84·5%, the positive predictive value of 10·9% and the negative predictive value of 96·2%. We concluded that serum ADA2 activity is neither useful to diagnosis of active PTB nor to differentiate from other respiratory diseases
Experimental tests of slender reinforced concrete columns under combined axial load and lateral force
The use of high strength concrete (HSC) in columns has become more frequent since a substantial reduction of the cross-section is obtained, meaning that slenderness increases for the same axial load and length, producing higher second order effects. However, the experimental tests in the literature of reinforced concrete columns subjected to axial load and lateral force focus on shear span ratios, according to Eurocode 2 (2004), clause 5.6.3., (M/(V·h)) lower than 6.5. This gap in the literature limits technological development for the construction of these structural elements. This paper presents 44 experimental tests on reinforced concrete columns subjected to constant axial load and monotonic lateral force. The aim of this is to gain greater knowledge of the types of elements which will also be of use in calibrating the numerical models and validating the simplified methods. The test parameters are strength of concrete (normal- and high-strength concrete), shear span ratio, axial load level and longitudinal and transversal reinforcement ratios. Pairing symmetry and long range pair potential in a weak coupling theory of superconductivity
We study the superconducting phase with two component order parameter
scenario, such as, , where . We show, that in absence of orthorhombocity, the usual
does not mix with usual symmetry gap in an anisotropic band
structure. But the symmetry does mix with the usual d-wave for . The d-wave symmetry with higher harmonics present in it also mixes with
higher order extended wave symmetry. The required pair potential to obtain
higher anisotropic and extended s-wave symmetries, is derived by
considering longer ranged two-body attractive potential in the spirit of tight
binding lattice. We demonstrate that the dominant pairing symmetry changes
drastically from to like as the attractive pair potential is obtained
from longer ranged interaction. More specifically, a typical length scale of
interaction , which could be even/odd multiples of lattice spacing leads
to predominant wave symmetry. The role of long range interaction on
pairing symmetry has further been emphasized by studying the typical interplay
in the temperature dependencies of these higher order and wave pairing

Laser probing of Cooper-paired trapped atoms
We consider a gas of trapped Cooper-paired fermionic atoms which are
manipulated by laser light. The laser induces a transition from an internal
state with large negative scattering length (superfluid) to one with weaker
interactions (normal gas). We show that the process can be used to detect the
presence of the superconducting order parameter. Also, we propose a direct way
of measuring the size of the gap in the trap. The efficiency and feasibility of
