Ozone exposure and schoolchildren
The average annual ozone levels have been increasing in Japan, even though the high ozone levels have decreased in recent years. There is limited information on the relationship between ozone exposure, pulmonary function, and respiratory symptoms in schoolchildren in Japan. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of short-term ozone exposure on pulmonary function and respiratory symptoms in Japanese schoolchildren. Afternoon peak expiratory flow (PEF) values and respiratory symptom scores were recorded daily in 276 schoolchildren from September to October 2016 and from January to February 2017. The association of daily ozone levels with PEF was assessed using a linear mixed model and that with respiratory symptoms was evaluated by generalized estimating equations logistic regression analysis. There was a significant association of daily ozone levels with PEF values. A 13.6-ppb increment in the interquartile range for ozone exposure was significantly associated with a decrease in PEF of −3.67 L/min (95% confidence interval −4.73, −2.61). However, increased ozone levels were not associated with an increased risk of respiratory symptoms. Our present findings suggest that more attention should be paid to the potential adverse effects of short-term ozone exposure on pulmonary function in schoolchildren
カン focal nodular hyperplasia ニ タイスル フククウキョウカ カン セツジョジュツ
Recently, laparoscopic hepatectomy of the liver has been reported to be safe, with possible advantages to the patients such as reduced postoperative pain and shorter hospital stay. We report successful laparoscopic partial liver resections for two cases of focal nodular hyperplasia.
Two cases of 43-year-old male and 69-year-old male, with chronic hepatitis C and without any symptoms, presented in each other a solitary mass 1.5 and 1.0 cm in size at the edge of the liver on diagnostic imagings. The patients underwent laparoscopic partial hepatectomy to rule out well differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma. The histopathological diagnosis was focal nodular hyperplasia. Each patient had an uneventful postoperative recovery and had been free from recurrence during the 6 years follow-up period. Laparoscopic partial hepatectomy is indicated in patients with benign solid mass located at the edge of the liver
Retrospective clinical study on the notable efficacy and related factors of infliximab therapy in a rheumatoid arthritis management group in Japan: one-year clinical outcomes (RECONFIRM-2)
Biologics targeting TNF have brought about a paradigm shift in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and infliximab, anti-TNF-α chimeric monoclonal antibody, was marketed in 2003 in Japan. We previously reported on the RECONFIRM study, a retrospective clinical study on the efficacy of infliximab therapy in a RA management group in Japan, where we evaluated the clinical response after 22 weeks of the therapy in 258 patients. The study reported here was aimed at reconfirming the clinical efficacy of the infliximab therapy and demographic factors related to the efficacy over a 54-week study period in 410 RA patients in the same study group. Infliximab was infused according to the domestically approved method, and the clinical response was evaluated following 54 weeks of infliximab therapy using the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) response criteria. Disease activity was assessed by DAS28-CRP (Disease Activity Score including a 28-joint count/C-reactive protein). Infliximab was discontinued in 24.4% of the 410 patients at 54 weeks and 9.3% and 8.1% discontinued the therapy due to adverse events and inefficiency, respectively. Average DAS28-CRP decreased from 5.5 at week 0 to 3.1 at week 54 after the therapy. Patients in remission and those showing low-, moderate-, and high-disease activity changed from 0.0, 1.0, 9.0 and 90.0%, respectively, at the start of the study to 27.6, 11.7, 34.4 and 26.3%, respectively, at week 54. Younger age, RF-negativity and low scores of DAS28-CRP showed significant correlations with remission at week 54. EULAR response criteria—good, moderate, and no response to infliximab—were 37.0, 41.7 and 21.2%, respectively. In conclusion, we reconfirmed the clinical efficacy of infliximab and demographic factors related to the efficacy over a 54-week study period in 410 Japanese patients with RA using DAS28-CRP and EULAR response criteria

A forty seven-year-old male who had been in clinical follow-up for a pancreatic pseudocystunderwent a laparoscopic cystogastrostomy through the lesser peritoneal sac in 1996. Thisprocedure is performed by creating a cystotomy and posterior gastrotomy through whichan Endo GIATM is applied. The mouth of cystogastrostomy is closed using continuous suturesby Endo STITCHTM. This approach does not rely on adhesions between the pseudocyst andposterior wall of the stomach, and offers clear advantages over previously described techniquesin the management of pancreatic pseudocyst
Traits to Differentiate Lineages and Subspecies of Aegilops tauschii, the D Genome Progenitor Species of Bread Wheat
Aegilops tauschii Coss., the D genome donor of hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), is the most promising resource used to broaden the genetic diversity of wheat. Taxonomical studies have classified Ae. tauschii into two subspecies, ssp. tauschii and ssp. strangulata. However, molecular analysis revealed three distantly related lineages, TauL1, TauL2 and TauL3. TauL1 and TauL3 includes the only ssp. tauschii, whereas TauL2 includes both subspecies. This study aimed to clarify the phylogeny of Ae. tauschii and to find the traits that can differentiate between TauL1, TauL2 and TauL3, or between ssp. tauschii and ssp. strangulata. We studied the genetic and morpho-physiological diversity in 293 accessions of Ae. tauschii, covering the entire range of the species. A total of 5880 high-quality SNPs derived from DArTseq were used for phylogenetic cluster analyses. As a result, we observed wide morpho-physiological variation in each lineage and subspecies. Despite this variation, no key traits can discriminate lineages or subspecies though some traits were significantly different. Of 124 accessions previously lacking the passport data, 66 were allocated to TauL1, 57 to TauL2, and one to TauL3
Random regression for modeling soybean plant response to irrigation changes using time-series multispectral data
Plant response to drought is an important yield-related trait under abiotic stress, but the method for measuring and modeling plant responses in a time series has not been fully established. The objective of this study was to develop a method to measure and model plant response to irrigation changes using time-series multispectral (MS) data. We evaluated 178 soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) accessions under three irrigation treatments at the Arid Land Research Center, Tottori University, Japan in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The irrigation treatments included W5: watering for 5 d followed by no watering 5 d, W10: watering for 10 d followed by no watering 10 d, D10: no watering for 10 d followed by watering 10 d, and D: no watering. To capture the plant responses to irrigation changes, time-series MS data were collected by unmanned aerial vehicle during the irrigation/non-irrigation switch of each irrigation treatment. We built a random regression model (RRM) for each of combination of treatment by year using the time-series MS data. To test the accuracy of the information captured by RRM, we evaluated the coefficient of variation (CV) of fresh shoot weight of all accessions under a total of nine different drought conditions as an indicator of plant’s stability under drought stresses. We built a genomic prediction model (MTRRM model) using the genetic random regression coefficients of RRM as secondary traits and evaluated the accuracy of each model for predicting CV. In 2020 and 2021,the mean prediction accuracies of MTRRM models built in the changing irrigation treatments (r = 0.44 and 0.49, respectively) were higher than that in the continuous drought treatment (r = 0.34 and 0.44, respectively) in the same year. When the CV was predicted using the MTRRM model across 2020 and 2021 in the changing irrigation treatment, the mean prediction accuracy (r = 0.46) was 42% higher than that of the simple genomic prediction model (r =0.32). The results suggest that this RRM method using the time-series MS data can effectively capture the genetic variation of plant response to drought
