Characterization of iron compounds in tumour tissue from temporal lobe epilepsy patients using low temperature magnetic methods
Excess iron accumulation in the brain has been shown to be related to a variety of neurodegenerative diseases. However, identification and characterization of iron compounds in human tissue is difficult because concentrations are very low. For the first time, a combination of low temperature magnetic methods was used to characterize iron compounds in tumour tissue from patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). Induced magnetization as a function of temperature was measured between 2 and 140 K after cooling in zero-field and after cooling in a 50 mT field. These curves reveal an average blocking temperature for ferritin of 10 K and an anomaly due to magnetite at 48 K. Hysteresis measurements at 5 K show a high coercivity phase that is unsaturated at 7 T, which is typical for ferritin. Magnetite concentration was determined from the saturation remanent magnetization at 77 K. Hysteresis measurements at various temperatures were used to examine the magnetic blocking of magnetite and ferritin. Our results demonstrate that low temperature magnetic measurements provide a useful and sensitive tool for the characterisation of magnetic iron compounds in human tissu

Salience of nationality in students' spontaneous self-concept: A comparative study of a nationally homogeneous and a heterogeneous school context
We investigated the salience of nationality in adolescentsâ self-concept as a function of the diversity of the school context. According to the distinctiveness postulate, people selectively attend to and encode aspects that are most distinctive. We therefore predicted that students in the nationally heterogeneous school environment would mention nationality more frequently in their spontaneous self-concept than those in the more homogeneous school setting. Furthermore, we expected minority members to mention nationality more frequently. These predictions were confirmed and implications will be discussed
Measuring emotions during learning: lack of coherence between automated facial emotion recognition and emotional experience
Measuring emotions non-intrusively via affective computing provides a promising source of information for adaptive learning and intelligent tutoring systems. Using non-intrusive, simultaneous measures of emotions, such systems could steadily adapt to students emotional states. One drawback, however, is the lack of evidence on how such modern measures of emotions relate to traditional self-reports. The aim of this study was to compare a prominent area of affective computing, facial emotion recognition, to studentsâ self-reports of interest, boredom, and valence. We analyzed different types of aggregation of the simultaneous facial emotion recognition estimates and compared them to self-reports after reading a text. Analyses of 103 students revealed no relationship between the aggregated facial emotion recognition estimates of the software FaceReader and self-reports. Irrespective of different types of aggregation of the facial emotion recognition estimates, neither the epistemic emotions (i.e., boredom and interest), nor the estimates of valence predicted the respective self-report measure. We conclude that assumptions on the subjective experience of emotions cannot necessarily be transferred to other emotional components, such as estimated by affective computing. We advise to wait for more comprehensive evidence on the predictive validity of facial emotion recognition for learning before relying on it in educational practice

Magnetic iron compounds in the human brain: a comparison of tumour and hippocampal tissue
Iron is a central element in the metabolism of normal and malignant cells. Abnormalities in iron and ferritin expression have been observed in many types of cancer. Interest in characterizing iron compounds in the human brain has increased due to advances in determining a relationship between excess iron accumulation and neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. In this work, four different magnetic methods have been employed to characterize the iron phases and magnetic properties of brain tumour (meningiomas) tissues and non-tumour hippocampal tissues. Four main magnetic components can be distinguished: the diamagnetic matrix, nearly paramagnetic blood, antiferromagnetic ferrihydrite cores of ferritin and ferrimagnetic magnetite and/or maghemite. For the first time, open hysteresis loops have been observed on human brain tissue at room temperature. The hysteresis properties indicate the presence of magnetite and/or maghemite particles that exhibit stable single-domain (SD) behaviour at room temperature. A significantly higher concentration of magnetically ordered magnetite and/or maghemite and a higher estimated concentration of heme iron was found in the meningioma samples. First-order reversal curve diagrams on meningioma tissue further show that the stable SD particles are magnetostatically interacting, implying high-local concentrations (clustering) of these particles in brain tumours. These findings suggest that brain tumour tissue contains an elevated amount of remanent iron oxide phases

Insect communities under skyglow: diffuse night-time illuminance induces spatio-temporal shifts in movement and predation
Artificial light at night (ALAN) is predicted to have far-reaching consequences for natural ecosystems given its influence on organismal physiology and behaviour, species interactions and community composition. Movement and predation are fundamental ecological processes that are of critical importance to ecosystem functioning. The natural movements and foraging behaviours of nocturnal invertebrates may be particularly sensitive to the presence of ALAN. However, we still lack evidence of how these processes respond to ALAN within a community context. We assembled insect communities to quantify their movement activity and predation rates during simulated Moon cycles across a gradient of diffuse night-time illuminance including the full range of observed skyglow intensities. Using radio frequency identification, we tracked the movements of insects within a fragmented grassland Ecotron experiment. We additionally quantified predation rates using prey dummies. Our results reveal that even low-intensity skyglow causes a temporal shift in movement activity from day to night, and a spatial shift towards open habitats at night. Changes in movement activity are associated with indirect shifts in predation rates. Spatio-temporal shifts in movement and predation have important implications for ecological networks and ecosystem functioning, highlighting the disruptive potential of ALAN for global biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services
