Distributional Measures of Semantic Distance: A Survey
The ability to mimic human notions of semantic distance has widespread
applications. Some measures rely only on raw text (distributional measures) and
some rely on knowledge sources such as WordNet. Although extensive studies have
been performed to compare WordNet-based measures with human judgment, the use
of distributional measures as proxies to estimate semantic distance has
received little attention. Even though they have traditionally performed poorly
when compared to WordNet-based measures, they lay claim to certain uniquely
attractive features, such as their applicability in resource-poor languages and
their ability to mimic both semantic similarity and semantic relatedness.
Therefore, this paper presents a detailed study of distributional measures.
Particular attention is paid to flesh out the strengths and limitations of both
WordNet-based and distributional measures, and how distributional measures of
distance can be brought more in line with human notions of semantic distance.
We conclude with a brief discussion of recent work on hybrid measures
Are speed enforcement cameras more effective than other speed management measures? The impact of speed management schemes on 30mph roads.
This paper presents the results of an evaluation of the impact of various types of speed management schemes on both traffic speeds and accidents. The study controls for general trends in accidents, regression-to-mean effects and migration, separately estimating the accident
changes attributable to the impact of the schemes on traffic speed and on traffic volume. It was found that, when judged in absolute terms, all types of speed management scheme have remarkably similar effects on accidents, with an average fall in personal injury accidents of about 1 accident/km/year. In terms of the percentage accident reduction, however, engineering schemes incorporating vertical deflections (such as
speed humps or cushions) offer the largest benefits: at 44%, the average reduction in personal injury accidents attributable to such schemes, is twice that at sites where safety cameras were used to control speeds (22%) and they were the only type of scheme to have a significant
impact on fatal and serious accidents. Other types of engineering scheme (with a fall of 29% in personal injury accidents) were on average less effective in reducing accidents than schemes with vertical features but more effective than cameras. All types of scheme were generally
effective in reducing speeds, with the largest reductions tending to be obtained with vertical deflections and the smallest with other types of engineering schemes
Developing sexual competence? Exploring strategies for the provision of effective sexualities and relationships education
School-based sexualities and relationships education (SRE) offers one of the most promising means of improving young people's sexual health through developing 'sexual competence'. In the absence of evidence on whether the term holds the same meanings for young people and adults (e.g. teachers, researchers, policy-makers), the paper explores 'adult' notions of sexual competence as construed in research data and alluded to in UK Government guidance on SRE, then draws on empirical research with young people on factors that affect the contexts, motivations and outcomes of sexual encounters, and therefore have implications for sexual competence. These data from young people also challenge more traditional approaches to sexualities education in highlighting disjunctions between the content of school-based input and their reported sexual experience. The paper concludes by considering the implications of these insights for developing a shared notion of what SRE is trying to achieve and suggestions for recognition in the content and approaches to SRE.</p

ciliaFA : a research tool for automated, high-throughput measurement of ciliary beat frequency using freely available software
Background: Analysis of ciliary function for assessment of patients suspected of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and
for research studies of respiratory and ependymal cilia requires assessment of both ciliary beat pattern and beat
frequency. While direct measurement of beat frequency from high-speed video recordings is the most accurate and
reproducible technique it is extremely time consuming. The aim of this study was to develop a freely available
automated method of ciliary beat frequency analysis from digital video (AVI) files that runs on open-source software
(ImageJ) coupled to Microsoft Excel, and to validate this by comparison to the direct measuring high-speed video
recordings of respiratory and ependymal cilia. These models allowed comparison to cilia beating between 3 and 52 Hz.
Methods: Digital video files of motile ciliated ependymal (frequency range 34 to 52 Hz) and respiratory epithelial cells
(frequency 3 to 18 Hz) were captured using a high-speed digital video recorder. To cover the range above between 18
and 37 Hz the frequency of ependymal cilia were slowed by the addition of the pneumococcal toxin pneumolysin.
Measurements made directly by timing a given number of individual ciliary beat cycles were compared with those
obtained using the automated ciliaFA system.
Results: The overall mean difference (± SD) between the ciliaFA and direct measurement high-speed digital imaging
methods was −0.05 ± 1.25 Hz, the correlation coefficient was shown to be 0.991 and the Bland-Altman limits of
agreement were from −1.99 to 1.49 Hz for respiratory and from −2.55 to 3.25 Hz for ependymal cilia.
Conclusions: A plugin for ImageJ was developed that extracts pixel intensities and performs fast Fourier
transformation (FFT) using Microsoft Excel. The ciliaFA software allowed automated, high throughput measurement of
respiratory and ependymal ciliary beat frequency (range 3 to 52 Hz) and avoids operator error due to selection bias. We
have included free access to the ciliaFA plugin and installation instructions in Additional file 1 accompanying this
manuscript that other researchers may use
A Near-Infrared Spectroscopic Study of the Accreting Magnetic White Dwarf SDSS J121209.31+013627.7 and its Substellar Companion
The nature of the excess near-infrared emission associated with the magnetic
white dwarf commonly known as SDSS 1212 is investigated primarily through
spectroscopy, and also via photometry. The inferred low mass secondary in this
system has been previously detected by the emission and variation of H,
and the m spectral data presented here are consistent with the
presence of a late L or early T dwarf. The excess flux seen beyond 1.5 m
in the phase-averaged spectrum is adequately modeled with an L8 dwarf
substellar companion and cyclotron emission in a 7 MG magnetic field. This
interesting system manifests several observational properties typical of
polars, and is most likely an old interacting binary with a magnetic white

Gold nanoparticles as novel agents for cancer therapy
Gold nanoparticles are emerging as promising agents for cancer therapy and are being investigated as drug carriers, photothermal agents, contrast agents and radiosensitisers. This review introduces the field of nanotechnology with a focus on recent gold nanoparticle research which has led to early-phase clinical trials. In particular, the pre-clinical evidence for gold nanoparticles as sensitisers with ionising radiation in vitro and in vivo at kilovoltage and megavoltage energies is discussed
Orbital Kondo Effect in CeLaB: Scaling Analysis
Peculiarity of the Kondo effect in CeLaB is investigated on
the basis of the scaling equations up to third order. For the case where the
- charge fluctuation enters in addition to the - one, the
effective exchange interaction becomes anisotropic with respect to the orbital
pseudospins which represent the two different orbitals in the ground
state. Because of different characteristic energies for electric and magnetic
tensors, scaling with the single Kondo temperature does not apply to physical
quantities such as the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Possibility of
a bizzare phase is pointed out where the RKKY interaction leads to the spin
ordering without orbital ordering. This phase serves as a candidate of the

Extremely red objects in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey Early Data Release
We construct a sample of extremely red objects (EROs) within the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey by combining the Early Data Release with optical data from the Subaru/XMM–Newton Deep Field. We find a total of 3715 objects over 2013 arcmin2 with R−K > 5.3 and K≤ 20.3, which is a higher surface density than found by previous studies. This is partly due to our ability to use a small aperture in which to measure colours, but is also the result of a genuine overdensity of objects compared to other fields. We separate our sample into passively evolving and dusty star-forming galaxies using their RJK colours and investigate their radio properties using a deep radio map. The dusty population has a higher fraction of individually detected radio sources and a higher mean radio flux density among the undetected objects, but the passive population has a higher fraction of bright radio sources, suggesting that active galactic nuclei are more prevalent among the passive ERO population
