Phases and fractal structures of three-dimensional simplicial gravity

We study phases and fractal structures of three-dimensional simplicial quantum gravity by the Monte-Carlo method. After measuring the surface area distribution (SAD) which is the three-dimensional analog of the loop length distribution (LLD) in two-dimensional quantum gravity, we classify the fractal structures into three types: (i) in the hot (strong coupling) phase, strong gravity makes the space-time one crumpled mother universe with small fluctuating branches around it. This is a crumpled phase with a large Hausdorff dimension d_{\mbox{\tiny H}} \simeq 5. The topologies of cross-sections are extremely complicated. (ii) at the critical point, we observe that the space-time is a fractal-like manifold which has one mother universe with small and middle size branches around it. The Hausdorff dimension is d_{\mbox{\tiny H}} \simeq 4. We observe some scaling behaviors for the cross-sections of the manifold. This manifold resembles the fractal surface observed in two-dimensional quantum gravity. (iii) in the cold (weak coupling) phase, the mother universe disappears completely and the space-time seems to be the branched-polymer with a small Hausdorff dimension d_{\mbox{\tiny H}} \simeq 2. Almost all of the cross-sections have the spherical topology S2S^2 in the cold phase.Comment: 14 pages, latex file, 5 Postscript figures, use psfig.st

GPR52 accelerates fatty acid biosynthesis in a ligand-dependent manner in hepatocytes and in response to excessive fat intake in mice

Gpr52 is an orphan G-protein-coupled receptor of unknown physiological function. We found that Gpr52-deficient (Gpr52−/−) mice exhibit leanness associated with reduced liver weight, decreased hepatic de novo lipogenesis, and enhanced insulin sensitivity. Treatment of the hepatoma cell line HepG2 cells with c11, the synthetic GPR52 agonist, increased fatty acid biosynthesis, and GPR52 knockdown (KD) abolished the lipogenic action of c11. In addition, c11 induced the expressions of lipogenic enzymes (SCD1 and ELOVL6), whereas these inductions were attenuated by GPR52-KD. In contrast, cholesterol biosynthesis was not increased by c11, but its basal level was significantly suppressed by GPR52-KD. High-fat diet (HFD)-induced increase in hepatic expression of Pparg2 and its targets (Scd1 and Elovl6) was absent in Gpr52−/− mice with alleviated hepatosteatosis. Our present study showed that hepatic GPR52 promotes the biosynthesis of fatty acid and cholesterol in a ligand-dependent and a constitutive manner, respectively, and Gpr52 participates in HFD-induced fatty acid synthesis in liver

Evolution of Nuclear Shell Structure due to the Pion Exchange Potential

The evolution of nuclear shell structure is investigated for the first time within density-dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock theory and the role of π\pi-exchange potential is studied in detail. The energy differences between the neutron orbits \Lrb{\nu1h_{9/2},\nu 1i_{13/2}} in the N=82 isotones and between the proton ones \Lrb{\pi1g_{7/2},\pi1h_{11/2}} in the Z=50 isotopes are extracted as a function of neutron excess NZN-Z. A kink around Z=58Z = 58 for the N=82 isotones is found as an effect resulting from pion correlations. It is shown that the inclusion of π\pi-coupling plays a central role to provide realistic isospin dependence of the energy differences. In particular, the tensor part of the π\pi-coupling has an important effect on the characteristic isospin dependence observed in recent experiments.Comment: 4 pages and 4 figure

Ultrasonography and 3D-CT Follow-Up of Extrahepatic Portal Vein Aneurysm: A Case Report

Extrahepatic portal vein aneurysm is a rare disorder. From 1956 to 2008, we found only 43 published English-language reports, including 67 cases, using Pub Med. We report a case of a 77-year-old woman who had complaints of lower abdominal fullness and residual urine. We performed ultrasonography (US), which demonstrated a congenital extrahepatic portal vein aneurysm. She had no obvious symptoms of the extrahepatic portal vein aneurysm. She had undergone gastrectomy without blood transfusion for gastric ulcer more than 20 years ago. Physical examination revealed no abnormal findings. US revealed a 2.2 × 1.8 cm, round shaped hypoechogenic lesion at the hepatic hilum. Color Doppler US showed bidirectional colors due to circular flow within this lesion. 3D-CT and CT angiography demonstrated that the saccular aneurysm at the hepatic hilum was 3.0 cm in diameter and was enhanced equal to that of portal vein.Twenty-six months after the diagnosis, the aneurysm had not grown in size. Since our patient had no serious complaints or liver disease, surgical procedures had not been employed. US and 3D-CT are noninvasive diagnostic techniques and are helpful in the diagnosis and follow-up of extrahepatic portal vein aneurysms

Three Groups in the 28 Joints for Rheumatoid Arthritis Synovitis - Analysis Using More than 17,000 Assessments in the KURAMA Database.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a joint-destructive autoimmune disease. Three composite indices evaluating the same 28 joints are commonly used for the evaluation of RA activity. However, the relationship between, and the frequency of, the joint involvements are still not fully understood. Here, we obtained and analyzed 17,311 assessments for 28 joints in 1,314 patients with RA from 2005 to 2011 from electronic clinical chart templates stored in the KURAMA (Kyoto University Rheumatoid Arthritis Management Alliance) database. Affected rates for swelling and tenderness were assessed for each of the 28 joints and compared between two different sets of RA patients. Correlations of joint symptoms were analyzed for swellings and tenderness using kappa coefficient and eigen vectors by principal component analysis. As a result, we found that joint affected rates greatly varied from joint to joint both for tenderness and swelling for the two sets. Right wrist joint is the most affected joint of the 28 joints. Tenderness and swellings are well correlated in the same joints except for the shoulder joints. Patients with RA tended to demonstrate right-dominant joint involvement and joint destruction. We also found that RA synovitis could be classified into three categories of joints in the correlation analyses: large joints with wrist joints, PIP joints, and MCP joints. Clustering analysis based on distribution of synovitis revealed that patients with RA could be classified into six subgroups. We confirmed the symmetric joint involvement in RA. Our results suggested that RA synovitis can be classified into subgroups and that several different mechanisms may underlie the pathophysiology in RA synovitis
