    Reconstructing GKZ via topological recursion

    In this article, a novel description of the hypergeometric differential equation found from Gel'fand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky's system (referred to GKZ equation) for Givental's JJ-function in the Gromov-Witten theory will be proposed. The GKZ equation involves a parameter \hbar, and we will reconstruct it as the WKB expansion from the classical limit 0\hbar\to 0 via the topological recursion. In this analysis, the spectral curve (referred to GKZ curve) plays a central role, and it can be defined as the critical point set of the mirror Landau-Ginzburg potential. Our novel description is derived via the duality relations of the string theories, and various physical interpretations suggest that the GKZ equation is identified with the quantum curve for the brane partition function in the cohomological limit. As an application of our novel picture for the GKZ equation, we will discuss the Stokes matrix for the equivariant CP1\mathbb{C}\textbf{P}^{1} model and the wall-crossing formula for the total Stokes matrix will be examined.     Ovarian Sertoli-Leydig Cell Tumor with High Serum Level of alpha-Fetoprotein

    A case of an ovarian Sertoli Leydig cell tumor (SLCT) associated with ele-vated serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels occurred in a 16-year-old girl. She had no signs of virilization or defeminization at the operation. In the abdominal cavity, a large and well demarcated tumor had replaced the right ovary. After the surgical removal of the tumor, the serum level of AFP decreased to within the normal limits. Microscopic examination of the tumor revealed intermediately differentiated SLCT with a retiform component. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated the immunoreactivity of AFP in Leydig cells and Sertoli cells.     A Novel Monoclonal Antibody to Thymic Medullary Epithelial Cells Raised Against a Thymoma Cell Line of the Rat

    A monoclonal antibody (mAb), RE12B2 was raised against a thymic thymoma cell line TAD1-3 and its specificity for the epithelial component of thymus assessed by immunohistochemical staining. The result revealed the mAb labeled cells in the medullary areas of the thymus. PIAS AREA study showed that the number of RE12B2 positive cells are reduced in the thymus of spontane-ous thymoma rat. Western immunoblotting revealed that RE12B2 recognized a protein with a molecular weight of 35 kDa. This mAb did not exhibit reactivity with cells in peripheral lymphoid organs

    Resistive detection of the Néel temperature of Cr₂O₃ thin films

    Although bulk magnetic properties of various antiferromagnets have been vigorously studied since long ago, their properties in the form of thin films, which are more relevant to antiferromagnetic spintronic devices, have not been investigated as much. In this work, we characterized the Néel temperature of Cr₂O₃ thin films by investigating the temperature dependence of the spin Hall magnetoresistance in Cr₂O₃/Pt bilayers. A precise determination of the Néel temperature was made possible by carefully designing the direction of the magnetic anisotropy in Cr₂O₃.     Liganded Thyroid Hormone Receptor Inhibits Phorbol 12-O-Tetradecanoate-13-Acetate-Induced Enhancer Activity via Firefly Luciferase cDNA

    Thyroid hormone receptor (TR) belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor (NHR) superfamily and regulates the transcription of its target genes in a thyroid hormone (T3)-dependent manner. While the detail of transcriptional activation by T3 (positive regulation) has been clarified, the mechanism of T3-dependent repression (negative regulation) remains to be determined. In addition to naturally occurring negative regulations typically found for the thyrotropin β gene, T3-bound TR (T3/TR) is known to cause artificial negative regulation in reporter assays with cultured cells. For example, T3/TR inhibits the transcriptional activity of the reporter plasmids harboring AP-1 site derived from pUC/pBR322-related plasmid (pUC/AP-1). Artificial negative regulation has also been suggested in the reporter assay with firefly luciferase (FFL) gene. However, identification of the DNA sequence of the FFL gene using deletion analysis was not performed because negative regulation was evaluated by measuring the enzymatic activity of FFL protein. Thus, there remains the possibility that the inhibition by T3 is mediated via a DNA sequence other than FFL cDNA, for instance, pUC/AP-1 site in plasmid backbone. To investigate the function of FFL cDNA as a transcriptional regulatory sequence, we generated pBL-FFL-CAT5 by ligating FFL cDNA in the 5' upstream region to heterologous thymidine kinase promoter in pBL-CAT5, a chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT)-based reporter gene, which lacks pUC/AP-1 site. In kidney-derived CV1 and choriocarcinoma-derived JEG3 cells, pBL-FFL-CAT5, but not pBL-CAT5, was strongly activated by a protein kinase C activator, phorbol 12-O-tetradecanoate-13-acetate (TPA). TPA-induced activity of pBL-FFL-CAT5 was negatively regulated by T3/TR. Mutation of nt. 626/640 in FFL cDNA attenuated the TPA-induced activation and concomitantly abolished the T3-dependent repression. Our data demonstrate that FFL cDNA sequence mediates the TPA-induced transcriptional activity, which is inhibited by T3/TR

    First underground results with NEWAGE-0.3a direction-sensitive dark matter detector

    A direction-sensitive dark matter search experiment at Kamioka underground laboratory with the NEWAGE-0.3a detector was performed. The NEWAGE- 0.3a detector is a gaseous micro-time-projection chamber filled with CF4 gas at 152 Torr. The fiducial volume and target mass are 20*25*31 cm3 and 0.0115 kg, respectively. With an exposure of 0.524 kgdays, improved spin-dependent weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-proton cross section limits by a direction-sensitive method were achieved including a new record of 5400 pb for 150 GeV/c2 WIMPs. We studied the remaining background and found that ambient gamma-rays contributed about one-fifth of the remaining background and radioactive contaminants inside the gas chamber contributed the rest.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Physics Letters

    Gastric variceal bleeding caused by an intrahepatic arterioportal fistula that formed after liver biopsy: a case report and review of the literature

    An intrahepatic arterioportal fistula is a rare cause of portal hypertension and variceal bleeding. We report on a patient with an intrahepatic arterioportal fistula following liver biopsy who was successfully treated by hepatectomy after unsuccessful arterial embolization. We also review the literature on symptomatic intrahepatic arterioportal fistulas after liver biopsy. A 48-year-old male with bleeding gastric varices and hepatitis B virus-associated liver cirrhosis was transferred to our hospital; this patient previously underwent percutaneous liver biopsies 3 and 6 years ago. Abdominal examination revealed a bruit over the liver, tenderness in the right upper quadrant, and splenomegaly. Ultrasonographic examination, computed tomography, and angiography confirmed an arterioportal fistula between the right hepatic artery and the right portal vein with portal hypertension. After admission, the patient suffered a large hematemesis and developed shock. He was treated with emergency transarterial embolization using microcoils. Since some collateral vessels bypassed the obstructive coils and still fed the fistulous area, embolization was performed again. Despite the second embolization, the collateral vessels could not be completely controlled. Radical treatment involving resection of his right hepatic lobe was performed. For nearly 6 years postoperatively, this patient has had no further episodes of variceal bleeding
