Effects of Subcooling on Lengths of Propagating Normal Zones in the LHD Helical Coils

    Get PDF
Propagation of a short normal zone was observed in a helical coil of the Large Helical Device, when the coil was cooled with subcooled helium, of which the inlet and outlet temperatures are 3.2 K and below 4.0 K, respectively. The normal zone was induced at the bottom position of the coil. It propagated to only the downstream side of the current with recovery from the opposite side, and stopped after passing the outer equator of the torus. The induced balance voltage is obviously lower and the propagating time is shorter than those of propagating normal zones observed in the helical coil cooled with saturated helium at 4.4 K. According to the simulation of the propagation of a normal zone, it is considered that such a short normal zone at the current close to the minimum propagating current propagates without full transition to film boiling

Objective. Real-time video capsule endoscopy (CE) with flexible spectral imaging color enhancement (FICE) improves visibility of small-bowel lesions. This article aims to clarify whether CE-FICE also improves detectability of small-bowel lesions. Patients and methods. A total of 55 patients who underwent CE at Hiroshima University Hospital during the period November 2009 through March 2010 were enrolled in the study. Five patients were excluded from the study because residues and transit delays prevented sufficient evaluation. Thus, 50 patients participated. Two experienced endoscopists (each having interpreted more than 50 capsule videos) analyzed the images. One interpreted conventional capsule videos; the other, blinded to interpretation of the conventional images, interpreted CE-FICE images obtained at settings 1-3 (setting 1: red 595 nm, green 540 nm, blue 535 nm; setting 2: red 420 nm, green 520 nm, blue 530 nm; setting 3: red 595 nm, green 570 nm, blue 415 nm). Lesions were classified as angioectasia, erosion, ulceration, or tumor. Detectability was compared between the two modalities. Time taken to interpret the capsule videos was also determined. Results. Seventeen angioectasias were identified by conventional CE; 48 were detected by CE-FICE at setting 1, 45 at setting 2, and 24 at setting 3, with significant differences at settings 1 and 2 (p = 0.0003, p < 0.0001, respectively). Detection of erosion, ulceration, and tumor did not differ statistically between conventional CE and CE-FICE, nor did interpretation time (conventional CE 36 Ā± 6.9 min; CE-FICE setting 1, 36 Ā± 6.4 min; setting 2, 38 Ā± 5.8 min; setting 3, 35 Ā± 6.7 min). Conclusions. CE-FICE is superior in the lesion detection in comparison with conventional CE and improves detection of angioectasia

The Large Helical Device (LHD), built in the 1990s, is a heliotron-type fusion plasma experimental device with the world\u27s first fully superconducting magnetic confinement system. The LHD cryogenic system operated stably for 18 years from 1998 to 2015 with high availability exceeding 99%. Unfortunately, in August 2015, a fire occurred in the cold box of the He refrigerator during maintenance, and nonmetallic components such as multilayer insulation films, temperature sensors, and measuring instruments were burnt down. Repair work started in November 2015 and completed at the end of July 2016. In August 2016, a test operation of the He refrigerator was conducted, and the refrigeration power was compared with that measured in the initial performance test conducted in 1995. The measured equivalent refrigeration power at 4.4 K was 9.19 kW, representing a decrease ~2% from the value of 9.38 kW measured in 1995. We attributed this slight decrease in refrigeration power to performance deterioration owing to aging over 18 years and not to the fire. The LHD restarted operation in January 2017, and its 19th operational cycle for a deuterium plasma experiment was conducted successfully up to August 2017. This paper reports the operational history and restart of the LHD superconducting magnet and cryogenic system

Conductor and joint test results of JT-60SA CS and EF coils using the NIFS test facility

    Get PDF
In 2007, JAEA and NIFS launched the test project to evaluate the performance of cable-in-conduit (CIC) conductors and conductor joints for the JT-60SA CS and EF coils. In this project, conductor tests for four types of coil conductor and joint tests for seven types of conductor joint have been conducted for the past eight years using the NIFS test facility. As a result, the test project indicated that the CIC conductors and conductor joints fulfill the design requirement for the CS and EF coils. In addition, the NIFS test facility is expected to be utilized as the test facility for the development of a conductor and conductor joint for the purpose of the DEMO nuclear fusion power plant, provided that the required magnetic field strength is within 9 T

It has been reported that dithiocarbamates, including thiuram (tetramethylthiuram disulfide), cause wavy distortions of the notochord in zebrafish and other fish embryos. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism underlying the toxicity of thiuram in zebrafish embryos. When embryos were exposed to thiuram (2-1,000 nM: 0.48-240 Āµg/L) from 3 hours post fertilization (hpf) (30% epiboly) until 24 hpf (Prim-5), all embryos develop wavy notochords, disorganized somites, and have shortened yolk sac extensions. The thiuram response was specific and did not cause growth retardation or mortality at 24 hpf. The thiuram-dependent responses showed the same concentration dependence with a waterborne EC50 values of approximately 7 nM. Morphometric measurements revealed that thiuram does not affect the rate of notochord lengthening. However, the rate of overall body lengthening was significantly reduced in thiuram exposed animals. Other dithiocarbamates, such as ziram, caused similar malformations to thiuram. While expression of genes involved in somitogenesis was not affected, the levels of notochord specific transcripts were altered before and after the onset of malformations. Distortion of the notochord started precisely at 18 hpf, which is concomitant with onset of spontaneous rhythmic trunk contractions. Abolishment of spontaneous contractions using tricaine, Ī±-bungarotoxin, and a paralytic mutant sofa potato, resulted in normal notochord morphology in the presence of thiuram. These results indicate that muscle activity is necessary to reveal the underlying functional deficit and suggest that the developmental target of dithiocarbamates impairs trunk plasticity through an unknown mechanism. This work was supported by grants-in-aid for scientific research from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (T.H. and H.T.), and grant-in-aid for JSPS fellows from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (W. Extension of the operational regime of the LHD towards a deuterium experiment

As the finalization of a hydrogen experiment towards the deuterium phase, the exploration of the best performance of hydrogen plasma was intensively performed in the large helical device. High ion and electron temperatures, Ti and Te, of more than 6ā€‰keV were simultaneously achieved by superimposing high-power electron cyclotron resonance heating onneutral beam injection (NBI) heated plasma. Although flattening of the ion temperature profile in the core region was observed during the discharges, one could avoid degradation by increasing the electron density. Another key parameter to present plasma performance is an averaged beta value āŸØĪ²āŸ©\left\langle \beta \right\rangle . The high āŸØĪ²āŸ©\left\langle \beta \right\rangle regime around 4% was extended to an order of magnitude lower than the earlier collisional regime. Impurity behaviour in hydrogen discharges with NBI heating was also classified with a wide range of edge plasma parameters. The existence of a no impurity accumulation regime, where the high performance plasma is maintained with high power heatingā€‰ā€‰>10 MW, was identified. Wide parameter scan experiments suggest that the toroidal rotation and the turbulence are the candidates for expelling impurities from the core region

Cancer stem-like cells (CSCs)/cancer-initiating cells (CICs) are defined by their abilities of tumor initiation, self-renewal and differentiation. In a previous study, we showed by gene knockdown using siRNA and gene overexpression experiments that Dnaj (Hsp40) homolog, subfamily B, member 8 (DNAJB8), a role in the maintenance, of renal cell carcinoma CSCs/CICs. In the present study, we established Dnajb8 knockout (KO) renal cell carcinoma (RCC) line cells (RenCa cells) and analyzed the cells to confirm the function of Dnajb8 in RCC CSCs/CICs. Dnajb8 KO cells showed reduced ratios of side population cells and reduced sphere forming ability. An in vivo single cell tumor initiation assay revealed that the numbers of CSCs/CICs were 3 in 4 wild-type RenCa cells and 1 in 4 Dnajb8 KO cells. Dnajb8 KO cells showed sensitivity to Docetaxel. On the other hand, Dnajb8 KO cells did not show any sensitivities to stresses including low pH, low glucose, heat shock and sensitivity to cisplatin. The results indicate that Dnajb8 has a role in tumor initiation, side population ratio and sphere formation but it is dispensable for stress responses
