The Japanese tale of the Heike

    Get PDF
The Tale of the Heike (Heike monogatari) is one of Japan's largest warrior tales (ikusa monogatari). It exists today in numerous variants that narrate the epochal Gempei War (1180-85 CE) fought between the Minamoto (also called Genji) and Taira (also called Heike) clans. The variants are classified in two primary types, those praising the establishment of Minamoto Yoritomo's shogunate and those narrating the fall of the Taira clan. Not

Effect of Hund's rule coupling on SU(4) spin-orbital system

We investigate the ground-state property of a one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model at quarter filling by numerical techniques such as the density-matrix renormalization group method and the exact diagonalization. When the Hund's rule coupling JJ is zero, the model is SU(4) symmetric. In fact, both spin and orbital correlations have a peak at q=π/2q=\pi/2, indicating an SU(4) singlet state with a four-site periodicity. On the other hand, with increasing JJ, it is found that the peak position of the orbital correlation changes to q=πq=\pi, while that of the spin correlation remains at q=π/2q=\pi/2. We briefly discuss how the SU(4) symmetry is broken by JJ.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of ICM2006 (August 20-25, 2006, Kyoto

High-Tc ramp-type Josephson junctions on MgO substrates for Terahertz applications

    Get PDF
The authors successfully fabricated high-Tc ramp-type junctions with PrBa2Cu3-xGaxO7-δ (PBCGO: x=0.1, 0.4) barriers on MgO substrates. The junctions showed resistively shunted Josephson junction (RSJ)-like I-V curves with thermally and voltage activated conductivity. The IcRn products for these junctions scaled very well with the Ga-doping. Maximum response of the junctions for 100-GHz millimeter-wave irradiation could be observed up to 12 mV corresponding to 6 THz. Using far infrared laser radiation, we confirmed a terahertz (THz) response of these junctions. These results show promise for THz-wave applications of ramp-type Josephson junctions

Oseltamivir Carboxylate, the Active Metabolite of Oseltamivir Phosphate (Tamiflu), Detected in Sewage Discharge and River Water in Japan

inhibitor oseltamivir carboxylate (OC) and has been developed for the treatment and prevention of both A and B strains of influenza. The recent increase in OP resistance in influenza A virus (H1N1; commonlly called “swine flu”) has raised questions about the widespread use of Tamiflu in seasonal epidemics and the potential ecotoxicologic risk associated with its use in the event of a pandemic. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to develop an analytical method for quantitative determination of OC in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluent and receiving river water, and to investigate the occurrence of OC in STP effluent and river water in Japan during a seasonal flu outbreak. Me t h o d s: We developed an analytical method based on solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Using this method, we analyzed samples from three sampling campaigns conducted during the 2008–2009 flu season in Kyoto City, Japan. Res u l t s: The highest concentration of OC detected in STP discharge was 293.3 ng/L from a conventional activated-sludge–based STP; however, we detected only 37.9 ng/L from an advanced STP with ozonation as a tertiary treatment. In the receiving river water samples, we detected 6.6–190.2 ng/L OC, during the peak of the flu season. Co n c l u s i o n: OC is present in STP effluent and river water only during the flu season. Ozonation as tertiary treatment in STP will substantially reduce the OC load in STP effluent during an influenza epidemic or pandemic. Key w o r d s: influenza, LC-MS/MS, oseltamivir carboxylate, river water, sewage discharge, Tamiflu. Environ Health Perspect 118:103–107 (2010). doi:10.1289/ehp.0900930 available vi

Hydrophobic Silicone Elastomer Chamber for Recording Trajectories of Motile Porcine Sperms without Adsorption

Motile porcine sperms adhere to hydrophilic materials such as glass and plastics. The adsorption of sperms to a hydrophobic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) membrane is less compared with that to glass. We investigated the linear velocity (LV) and amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALHD) of motile porcine sperm on glass and PDMS preparations using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Significant decreases were observed in the 15-min LV (P<0.05) and ALHD (P<0.05) in motile porcine sperm on glass preparations compared with those on PDMS preparations. These differences were due to adsorption of the head and/or neck to hydrophilic substrates. Because of the elasticity of PDMS, we propose that a PDMS membrane should be used for CASA. To investigate the dynamics of motile porcine sperms with microfluidics, we do not recommend plasma treatment to bond PDMS and glass in the microchannel preparation; instead, we suggest that a PDMS molding process without plasma treatment be used for preparation of microfluidic channels

Influence of hydraulic retention time, sludge retention time, and ozonation on the removal of free and conjugated estrogens in Japanese activated sludge treatment plants

This study describes the occurrence, fate, and removal of free estrogens (estrone (E1), 17 beta-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), 17 alpha-ethynylestradiol (EE2)) and their glucuronide and sulfate conjugates (estrone-3-sulphate (E1-3S), 17 beta-estradiol-3-sulfate (E2-3S), estriol-3-sulfate (E3-3S), estrone-3-glucuronide (E1-3G), 17 beta-estradiol-3-glucuronide (E2-3G), and estriol-3-glucuronide (E3-3G)) in 12 sewage treatment plants in Japan. Glucuronide conjugates were only rarely detected in sewage influents and entirely eliminated within the treatment plants. E1 was found at 69 ng/L, E2 at 108 ng/L, E1-3S at 18 ng/L, and E2-3S at 78 ng/L in the sewage influents. The average removal efficiency for E1, E2, and sulfate conjugates was 88, 92, and 93%, respectively, following activated sludge treatment. The removal of E1 and E2 was improved with increasing the sludge retention time (SRT), with the highest removal typically found from 12 days SRT onward. The removal of sulfate conjugates was also related to SRT with highest removals found from eight days SRT onward. No correlation was found between the hydraulic retention time and the removal of any of the estrogens. The ozone dosage of 4-7 mg/L reduced E3 and E2-3S and E3-3S to below detection levels. Overall ozonation reduced the estrogenicity of the effluents as expressed as estradiol equivalents from 8.4 to 0.7 ng/L. The results suggest adequate river basin management of estrogens in Japan could be accomplished by a mixture of activated sludge plants with long SRT and where necessary, the addition of tertiary ozonation

A Rare Case of Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of the Diaphragmatic Parietal Pleura with Dissemination

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare neoplasm that occurs at different sites in the body. Pleural IMT in particular is especially rare. IMTs infrequently tend to have malignancy. We report a rare case of advanced diaphragmatic parietal pleural IMT with dissemination. A 30-year-old woman complained of right upper abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed a large lobulated mass over the right diaphragm, but no disseminated nodules were noted. Intraoperatively, we found the primary tumor arising from the diaphragmatic parietal pleura and a dozen disseminated nodules, and we removed them completely. The histopathological and immunohistochemical diagnosis was IMT

Effect of Additive Elements Bi/Ni/Ge on Crack Initiation and Propagation for Low-Ag Solders

    Get PDF
This study discusses an effect of additive elements on crack propagation behaviour for low-Ag contain Sn1.0Ag0.7Cu lead-free solders at high temperature. A cyclic push-pull loading tests for four kinds of Sn1.0Ag0.7Cu solders were conducted at 313 K with a single hole specimen. Stress amplitude of solders containing additive element Bi were bigger than that of Bi-free solders. Crack initiation cycle of solders containing Bi were earlier than that of Bi-free solders. Low-Ag solders containing Bi had shorter crack propagation cycles than that of Bi-free solders. These results indicate that the additive element Bi have the effects on the crack initiation and propagation cycles, that is, Bi accelerates the crack propagation rate. We also discuss the adaptation of J-integral range parameter to the crack propagation rate evaluation for solders. J-integral range parameter evaluates the crack propagation rate for low-Ag solders independent of the additive elements

Ambulatory Surgery for Pilonidal Sinus : Tract Excision and Open Treatment Followed by At-Home Irrigation

    Get PDF
Pilonidal sinus is a cystic disease that occurs most often in the sacrococcygeal region. Surgical excision and coverage with a skin flap require postoperative bed rest. Most affected patients are young adults who find it difficult to obtain adequate postoperative bed rest owing to their work. The purpose of this study is to review the effectiveness of our ambulatory surgery procedure for pilonidal sinus, which involves tract excision and open treatment followed by at-home irrigation. We reviewed the 9 cases of chronic pilonidal sinus treated at our out-patient clinic by ambulatory surgery consisting of open excision without skin closure. Patients were sent home after careful observation for hemostasis at the surgical site. Postoperative wound treatment and irrigation were performed at home by the patients themselves. The mean immediate postoperative follow-up period was 22.3 days (13 to 31 days), and the mean number of follow-up visits was 3.3. No serious complication and recurrence was noted during the long-term follow-up period of 26.3 months (1 to 60 months). Although the healing time following our ambulatory procedure was not short, no postoperative rest was required, and the recurrence rate was zero. We believe this procedure is useful for selected patients with pilonidal sinus
