Hostile attribution bias as a mediator of the relationship between psychosocial maturity and aggression
This study examined hostile attribution bias as a mediator of the relationship between psychosocial maturity and aggression. Specifically, it was predicted that hostile attribution bias would mediated the relationship between the two responsibility constructs of identity and self-reliance, and reactive physical aggression. Using data from 56 female juvenile offenders at three post-adjudication facilities, hostile attribution bias did not mediate the relationship between the responsibility factors of identity/self-reliance and reactive physical aggression. Weak inter-band coupling in MgB: a specific heat analysis
The superconducting state of MgB is investigated by specific
heat measurements in detail. The specific heat in the normal state is analyzed
using a recently developed computer code. This allows for an extraction of the
electronic specific heat in the superconducting state with high accuracy and a
fair determination of the main lattice features. One of the two investigated
samples shows a hump in the specific heat at low temperatures within the
superconducting state, accompanied by an unusual low value of the small gap,
, pointing to a very weak inter-band coupling. This
sample allows for a detailed analysis of the contribution from the -band
to the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state. Therefore the
usual analysis method is modified, to include the individual conservation of
entropy of both bands. From analyzing the deviation function of
MgB, the theoretically predicted weak inter-band coupling scenario is
confirmed.Comment: major revision
An apodizing phase plate coronagraph for VLT/NACO
We describe a coronagraphic optic for use with CONICA at the VLT that
provides suppression of diffraction from 1.8 to 7 lambda/D at 4.05 microns, an
optimal wavelength for direct imaging of cool extrasolar planets. The optic is
designed to provide 10 magnitudes of contrast at 0.2 arcseconds, over a
D-shaped region in the image plane, without the need for any focal plane

Hunting for planets in the HL Tau disk
Recent ALMA images of HL Tau show gaps in the dusty disk that may be caused
by planetary bodies. Given the young age of this system, if confirmed, this
finding would imply very short timescales for planet formation, probably in a
gravitationally unstable disk. To test this scenario, we searched for young
planets by means of direct imaging in the L'-band using the Large Binocular
Telescope Interferometer mid-infrared camera. At the location of two prominent
dips in the dust distribution at ~70AU (~0.5") from the central star we reach a
contrast level of ~7.5mag. We did not detect any point source at the location
of the rings. Using evolutionary models we derive upper limits of ~10-15MJup at
<=0.5-1Ma for the possible planets. With these sensitivity limits we should
have been able to detect companions sufficiently massive to open full gaps in
the disk. The structures detected at mm-wavelengths could be gaps in the
distributions of large grains on the disk midplane, caused by planets not
massive enough to fully open gaps. Future ALMA observations of the molecular
gas density profile and kinematics as well as higher contrast infrared
observations may be able to provide a definitive answer.Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ Letter
