Transverse-Longitudinal Coupling by Space Charge in Cyclotrons
A method is presented that enables to compute the parameters of matched beams
with space charge in cyclotrons with emphasis on the effect of the
transverse-longitudinal coupling. Equations describing the
transverse-longitudinal coupling and corresponding tune-shifts in first order
are derived for the model of an azimuthally symmetric cyclotron. The
eigenellipsoid of the beam is calculated and the transfer matrix is transformed
into block-diagonal form. The influence of the slope of the phase curve on the
transverse-longitudinal coupling is accounted for. The results are generalized
and numerical procedures for the case of an AVF cyclotron are presented. The
algorithm is applied to the PSI Injector II and Ring cyclotron and the results
are compared to TRANSPORT.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Das Interpersonelle Aufmerksamkeitsmanagement-Inventar: Ein neues Instrument zur Erfassung unterschiedlicher Selbst- und Fremdwahrnehmungsfähigkeiten. = Interpersonal Attention Management Inventory: A New Instrument to Capture Different Self- and External Perception Skills
Cross section of the reaction close to threshold
We have measured inclusive data on -meson production in collisions
at COSY J\"ulich close to the hyperon production threshold and determined the
hyperon-nucleon invariant mass spectra. The spectra were decomposed into three
parts: , and . The cross section for the
channel was found to be much smaller than a previous measurement in
that excess energy region. The data together with previous results at higher
energies are compatible with a phase space dependence.Comment: accepted by Phys. lett. B some typos correcte
Aplastic Crisis as Primary Manifestation of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Aplastic crisis is an unusual feature of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We report the case of a 54-year-old woman presenting with both (extravascular) Coombs-positive hemolytic anemia and laboratory findings of bone marrow hyporegeneration with concomitant severe neutropenia. A bone marrow biopsy confirmed aplastic crisis. Diagnostic work-up revealed soaring titers of autoantibodies (anti-nuclear, anti-double-stranded DNA, anti-cardiolipin-IgM, and anti-beta 2-glykoprotein-IgM antibodies), indicating a connective tissue disease as the most plausible reason for bone marrow insufficiency. As the criteria for SLE were fulfilled, we initiated an immunosuppressive therapy by steroids, which led to a rapid complete hematologic and clinical remission in our patient. In this case, we could report on one of the rare cases of SLE-induced aplastic crisis showing that this condition can be entirely reversed by immunosuppressive treatment and that SLE-induced aplastic crisis yields a good prognosis. In conclusion, in a case of aplastic crisis, physicians should be aware that SLE can be a rare cause that is accessible to specific treatment
High resolution study of the Lambda p final state interaction in the reaction p + p -> K+ + (Lambda p)
The reaction pp -> K+ + (Lambda p) was measured at Tp=1.953 GeV and Theta = 0
deg with a high missing mass resolution in order to study the Lambda p final
state interaction. The large final state enhancement near the Lambda p
threshold can be described using the standard Jost-function approach. The
singlet and triplet scattering lengths and effective ranges are deduced by
fitting simultaneously the Lambda p invariant mass spectrum and the total cross
section data of the free Lambda p scattering.Comment: submitted to Physics Letters B, 10 pages, 3 figure
Updated Report Acceleration of Polarized Protons to 120-150 GeV/c at Fermilab
The SPIN@FERMI collaboration has updated its 1991-95 Reports on the
acceleration of polarized protons in Fermilab's Main Injector, which was
commissioned by Fermilab. This Updated Report summarizes some updated Physics
Goals for a 120-150 GeV/c polarized proton beam. It also contains an updated
discussion of the Modifications and Hardware needed for a polarized beam in the
Main Injector, along with an updated Schedule and Budget.Comment: 30 pages, 12 figure
Upper limits for a narrow resonance in the reaction p + p -> K^+ + (Lambda p)
The reaction pp -> K^+ + (Lambda p) has been measured at T_p = 1.953 GeV and
\Theta = 0 deg with a high missing mass resolution in order to study the Lambda
p final state interaction. Narrow S = -1 resonances predicted by bag model
calculations are not visible in the missing mass spectrum. Small structures
observed in a previous experiment are not confirmed. Upper limits for the
production cross section of a narrow resonance are deduced for missing masses
between 2058 and 2105 MeV/c^2.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
The STACEE-32 Ground Based Gamma-ray Detector
We describe the design and performance of the Solar Tower Atmospheric
Cherenkov Effect Experiment detector in its initial configuration (STACEE-32).
STACEE is a new ground-based gamma ray detector using the atmospheric Cherenkov
technique. In STACEE, the heliostats of a solar energy research array are used
to collect and focus the Cherenkov photons produced in gamma-ray induced air
showers. The large Cherenkov photon collection area of STACEE results in a
gamma-ray energy threshold below that of previous detectors.Comment: 45 pages, 25 figures, Accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments

A Precision Measurement of pp Elastic Scattering Cross Sections at Intermediate Energies
We have measured differential cross sections for \pp elastic scattering with
internal fiber targets in the recirculating beam of the proton synchrotron
COSY. Measurements were made continuously during acceleration for projectile
kinetic energies between 0.23 and 2.59 GeV in the angular range deg. Details of the apparatus and the data analysis are
given and the resulting excitation functions and angular distributions
presented. The precision of each data point is typically better than 4%, and a
relative normalization uncertainty of only 2.5% within an excitation function
has been reached. The impact on phase shift analysis as well as upper bounds on
possible resonant contributions in lower partial waves are discussed.Comment: 23 pages 29 figure
