    FACTORS RELATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF BALL SPEED AND TO THE INCIDENCE OF ONE-LEGGED LANDINGS IN THE FRONT-ROW VOLLEYBALL ATTACK

    A three-dimensional video analysis was used to identify factors related to the development of ball speed and to the incidence of one-legged landings in high-outside, front-row volleyball attacks. At ball contact, hand speed was 11.9±O.9 m·s-1 (mean±SD). Post-impact ball speed was 19.4±2.3 m·s-1. Shoulder and elbow rotations accounted for about 75% of hand speed at the instant of ball contact while the speed of the CM itself accounted for about 16% of hand speed. Trunk rotation and wrist rotation contributed 11 % and 2% to hand speed, respectively. Attackers possessed forward somersaulting, counterclockwise twisting, and counterclockwise "cartwheeling" angular momentum that resulted in faster hand speeds at contact but also a tendency for one-legged landings.     DETERMINISTIC FACTORS OF OVERALL BALL CONTACT HEIGHT DURING HIGH-OUTSIDE FRONT-ROW VOLLEYBALL ATTACKS

    The purpose of this study was to quantify the deterministic factors of overall ball contact height among elite level volleyball attackers. Thirty-two trials collected from nine members of the 1999 USA National A2 Team were subjected to 3D analysis. Results demonstrated that takeoff height (CM height at takeoff) and reach height (vertical distance between the hand and CM at contact) accounted for 86.7% of the overall ball contact height. Flight height (in-flight CM elevation) accounted for only 14% of overall height. Reach height was the only meaningful sUb-height that was significantly correlated with overall ball contact height (r=O.70) and appeared to be most sensitive to technique-related differences in performance. Horizontal approach speeds used by the athletes in this study were relatively slow (3.4±O.3 m·s-1) but were positively correlated with flight height (r=O.60)

D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Economics, 2007.Includes bibliographical references.This thesis consists of three essays on the economics of education.The first chapter estimates the effects of participating in the National School Lunch Program in the middle of the 20th century on educational attainment and adult health. My instrumental variables strategy exploits a change of the formula used by the federal government to allocate funding to the states that was phased in beginning in 1963. Identification is achieved by the fact that different birth cohorts were exposed to different degrees to the original formula and the new formula, along with the fact that the change of the formula affected states differentially by per capita income. Participation in the program as a child appears to have few long-run effects on health, but the effects on educational attainment are sizable. The second chapter studies the issue of racial diversity in higher education. I estimate the effects of college racial diversity on post-college earnings, civic behavior, and satisfaction with the college attended. I use the Beginning Postsecondary Students survey, which allows me to control for exposure to racial diversity prior to college. Moreover, I use two techniques from Altonji, Elder, and Taber (2005) to address the issue of selection on unobservables. Single-equation estimates suggest a positive effect of diversity on voting behavior and on satisfaction with the college attended, but I do not find an effect on other outcomes. Moreover, the estimates are very sensitive to the assumptions made about selection on unobservables.The third chapter studies university affirmative action bans. I use information on the timing of bans along with data from the Current Population Survey (CPS) and the American Community Survey (ACS) to estimate the effects of such bans on college enrollment and educational attainment.(cont.) I use a triple difference strategy that uses whites as a comparison group for underrepresented minorities and that exploits variation in the bans over states and across time. I find no adverse impact of bans on overall minority college attendance rates and educational attainment relative to whites, and I find no effect of the bans on minority enrollment in public colleges or four-year colleges.by Peter Hinrichs.Ph.D

    The effects of oxygen concentration on cell death, anti-oxidant transcription, acute inflammation, and cell proliferation in precision-cut lung slices

    Although animal models are often used in drug research, alternative experimental models are becoming more popular as they reduce animal use and suffering. Of particular interest are precision-cut lung slices, which refer to explants - with a reproducible thickness and diameter - that can be cultured ex vivo. Because lung slices (partially) reflect functional and structural features of whole tissue, they are often applied in the field of immunology, pharmacology, toxicology, and virology. Nevertheless, previous research failed to adequately address concerns with respect to the viability of lung slices. For instance, the effect of oxygen concentration on lung slice viability has never been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, the main goal of this study was to investigate the effect of oxygen concentration (20 vs. 80% O-2) on the degree of cell death, anti-oxidant transcription, acute inflammation, and cell proliferation in lung slices. According to the results, slices incubated at 20% O-2 displayed less cell death, antioxidant transcription, and acute inflammation, as well as more cell proliferation, demonstrating that these slices were considerably more viable than slices cultured at 80% O-2. These findings expand our knowledge on lung slices and their use as an alternative experimental model in drug research

    Gene therapy strategies for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis:recent advances, current challenges, and future directions

    Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic disease in which the lungs become irreversibly scarred, leading to declining lung function. As currently available drugs do not cure IPF, there remains a great medical need for more effective treatments. Perhaps this need could be addressed by gene therapies, which offer powerful and versatile ways to attenuate a wide range of processes involved in fibrosis. Despite the potential benefits of gene therapy, no one has reviewed the current state of knowledge regarding its application for treating IPF. We therefore analyzed publications that reported the use of gene therapies to treat pulmonary fibrosis in animals, as clinical studies have not been published yet. In this review, we first provide an introduction on the pathophysiology of IPF and the most well-established gene therapy approaches. We then present a comprehensive evaluation of published animal studies, after which we provide recommendations for future research to address challenges with respect to the selection and use of animal models as well as the development of delivery vectors and dosage forms. Addressing these considerations will bring gene therapies one step closer to clinical testing and thus closer to patients

    The novel extremely acidophilic, cell-wall-deficient archaeon Cuniculiplasma divulgatum gen. nov., sp. nov. represents a new family, Cuniculiplasmataceae fam. nov., of the order Thermoplasmatales

    Two novel cell-wall-less, acidophilic, mesophilic, organotrophic and facultatively anaerobic archaeal strains were isolated from acidic streamers formed on the surfaces of copper-ore-containing sulfidic deposits in south-west Spain and North Wales, UK. Cells of the strains varied from 0.1 to 2 μm in size and were pleomorphic, with a tendency to form filamentous structures. The optimal pH and temperature for growth for both strains were 1.0-1.2 and 37-40 °C, with the optimal substrates for growth being beef extract (3 g l- 1) for strain S5T and beef extract with tryptone (3 and 1 g l- 1, respectively) for strain PM4. The lipid composition was dominated by intact polar lipids consisting of a glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) core attached to predominantly glycosidic polar headgroups. In addition, free GDGT and small relative amounts of intact and core diether lipids were present. Strains S5T and PM4 possessed mainly menaquinones with minor fractions of thermoplasmaquinones. The DNA G+C content was 37.3 mol% in strain S5T and 37.16 mol% for strain PM4. A similarity matrix of 16S rRNA gene sequences (identical for both strains) showed their affiliation to the order Thermoplasmatales, with 73.9-86.3 % identity with sequences from members of the order with validly published names. The average nucleotide identity between genomes of the strains determined in silico was 98.75 %, suggesting, together with the 16S rRNA gene-based phylogenetic analysis, that the strains belong to the same species. A novel family, Cuniculiplasmataceae fam. nov., genus Cuniculiplasma gen. nov. and species Cuniculiplasma divulgatum sp. nov. are proposed based on the phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic analyses and physiological properties of the two isolates, S5T and PM4 ( = JCM 30641 = VKM B-2940). The type strain of Cuniculiplasma divulgatum is S5T ( = JCM 30642T = VKM B-2941T)
