A review on the development of visible light-responsive WO3-based photocatalysts for environmental applications
The use of semiconductor photocatalysis is a promising, green, and sustainable technology to address solar energy conversion and environmental remediation issues. Among photocatalytically active semiconductors, considerable attention has been given to the visible-light active tungsten oxide (WO3, Eg value ≈ 2.7–3.1 eV). This
semiconductor has several advantages: strong absorption in the visible spectrum range, stability in acidic and
oxidative conditions, low cost, and low toxicity. However, WO3 presents fast recombination of charge carriers’
and exhibits low photocatalytic activity for reduction reactions due to its conduction band potential (+0.5 V versus NHE). Many strategies have been applied to enhance photocatalytic activity and solar energy utilization of
WO3 by modifying the energy band position and reducing the charge carrier recombination. In this review, several approaches, such as designing with exposed facets and specific morphologies, doping with transition metals
and non-metals, deposition of noble metals, and heterojunction construction, are summarized.
Moreover, the photocatalytic properties of the reviewed WO3-based photocatalysts are discussed based on their
environmental applications such as degradation of organic pollutants, air purification, CO2 photoreduction, hydrogen production from water splitting and recently, simultaneous wastewater treatment and electric energy generation by photocatalytic fuel cells. Finally, the summary, future perspectives, and challenges of design novel WO3-based photocatalysts with high efficiency are pointed out to meet the urgent demands of highly efficient technologies that use visible or solar energy for environmental applications
HIV RNA Screening Reduces Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitor Resistance Risk in Persons Receiving Long-Acting Cabotegravir for HIV Prevention
BACKGROUND: The HPTN 083 trial demonstrated that long-acting cabotegravir (CAB-LA) was superior to tenofovir-disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) were detected in some participants with HIV infection. We used a low viral load INSTI genotyping assay to evaluate the timing of emergence of INSTI RAMs and assessed whether HIV screening with a sensitive RNA assay would have detected HIV infection before INSTI resistance emerged. METHODS: Single-genome sequencing to detect INSTI RAMs was performed for samples with viral loads <500 copies/mL from 5 participants with previously identified INSTI RAMs and 2 with no prior genotyping results. RESULTS: Major INSTI RAMs were detected in all 7 cases. HIV RNA testing identified infection before major INSTI RAMs emerged in 4 cases and before additional major INSTI RAMs accumulated in 1 case. Most INSTI RAMs were detected early when the viral load was low and CAB concentration was high. CONCLUSIONS: When using CAB-LA PrEP, earlier detection of HIV infection with a sensitive RNA assay may allow for earlier treatment initiation with the potential to reduce INSTI resistance risk. Further studies are needed to evaluate the value and feasibility of HIV RNA testing with CAB-LA PrEP
NEOTROPICAL XENARTHRANS: a data set of occurrence of xenarthran species in the Neotropics
Xenarthrans – anteaters, sloths, and armadillos – have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with 24 domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, ten anteaters, and six sloths. Our dataset includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data-paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the south of the USA, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to its austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n=5,941), and Cyclopes sp. has the fewest (n=240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n=11,588), and the least recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n=33). With regards to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n=962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n=12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other datasets of Neotropical Series which will become available very soon (i.e. Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans dataset
Cabotegravir for HIV Prevention in Cisgender Men and Transgender Women
Background: Safe and effective long-acting injectable agents for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are needed to increase the options for preventing HIV infection. Methods: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, noninferiority trial to compare long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA, an integrase strand-transfer inhibitor [INSTI]) at a dose of 600 mg, given intramuscularly every 8 weeks, with daily oral tenofovir disoproxil fumarate-emtricitabine (TDF-FTC) for the prevention of HIV infection in at-risk cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) and in at-risk transgender women who have sex with men. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive one of the two regimens and were followed for 153 weeks. HIV testing and safety evaluations were performed. The primary end point was incident HIV infection. Results: The intention-to-treat population included 4566 participants who underwent randomization; 570 (12.5%) identified as transgender women, and the median age was 26 years (interquartile range, 22 to 32). The trial was stopped early for efficacy on review of the results of the first preplanned interim end-point analysis. Among 1698 participants from the United States, 845 (49.8%) identified as Black. Incident HIV infection occurred in 52 participants: 13 in the cabotegravir group (incidence, 0.41 per 100 person-years) and 39 in the TDF-FTC group (incidence, 1.22 per 100 person-years) (hazard ratio, 0.34; 95% confidence interval, 0.18 to 0.62). The effect was consistent across prespecified subgroups. Injection-site reactions were reported in 81.4% of the participants in the cabotegravir group and in 31.3% of those in the TDF-FTC group. In the participants in whom HIV infection was diagnosed after exposure to CAB-LA, INSTI resistance and delays in the detection of HIV infection were noted. No safety concerns were identified. Conclusions: CAB-LA was superior to daily oral TDF-FTC in preventing HIV infection among MSM and transgender women. Strategies are needed to prevent INSTI resistance in cases of CAB-LA PrEP failure
Modeling 3D finite element analysis of a semi-elliptical crack on stress corrosion cracking of API X52 pipeline
In this study, an external semi-elliptical crack was modeled in a 3D API 5 L X52 pipeline with stress corrosion cracking (SCC). To make the crack, the finite element method (FEM) was used to obtain the failure pressure (Pf) and its mechanical behavior. The longitudinal crack had a constant length (2c) and varied with depth (a). The properties of X52 steel subjected to SCC using the slow strain rate technique (SSRT) were considered. True stress-strain curves were obtained in air and in an NS4 solution with pHs of 3.5 and 9.5 at temperatures of 25 and 50 °C. According to the SCC index calculated from the mechanical properties of the SSRT, the X52 steel is susceptible to SCC at pH 3.5 and 50 °C. The mechanical properties of the tensile test using the stress-strain curves decreased as the pH and temperature changed, compared to those carried out at room temperature. This was due to the corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement produced by the solution on the X52 steel. The failure pressure is sensitive to the stress-strain curve; if the stress-strain curve decreases, the failure pressure also decreases. Corrosion defects, such as longitudinal cracks in X52 steel, which could be susceptible to SCC in an NS4 solution, decrease the failure pressure (Pf) and its capacity to withstand pressures of up to 75 % in pipe-grade steel that transports hydrocarbons
Plagiarism, internet and academic success at the university
In this work, we determined, the level of incidence of the use of
technologies on academic success and the incidence of interaction
and experience on the level of plagiarism of university students.
A sample of 10,952 students from 31 face-to-face universities in
Ecuador was created. Students were classified based on their
experience level, level of interaction with teachers and classmates,
and the use they do with technology for academic activities. The
results showed that the level of experience does not affect academic success, but does have an incidence on plagiarism levels that
increase as this experience increases. Plagiarism reaches higher
levels when level of experience, family income and hours of connection per day increases. Academic performance depends on the
number of hours that students seek information and the number of
academic videos they watch. Also, plagiarism tends to decrease
as the student makes better use of technology for their academic
activities
