CNO abundances in the Galactic bulge
The carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances and trends in the bulge are
discussed in the context of our recent analysis of these elements in an
on-going project based on near-IR spectra (Ryde et al. 2009). We obtained these
using the CRIRES spectrometer on the VLT. The formation and evolution of the
Milky Way bulge can be constrained by studying elemental abundances of bulge
stars. Due to the large and variable visual extinction in the line-of-sight

Atom Economical, One-Pot, Three-Reaction Cascade to Novel Tricyclic 2,4-Dihydro-1H-benzo[f]isochromenes
A three-step domino reaction between 1-aryl-3-hexyne-2,6-diol derivatives and aldehydes is used to construct tricyclic 1,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[f]isochromenes. The cascade is initiated by BF3·OEt2 and involves alkynyl-Prins cyclization, FriedelâCrafts alkenylation, and dehydration/aromatization to create a new, central aromatic ring and eliminate 2 equiv. of water. Electron-donating substituents on the aryl ring of the 1-aryl-3-hexyne-2,6-diols significantly increase overall yields as do electron-rich aldehyde reaction partners. For 2,4-disubstituted 2H-benzo[f]isochromene products, diastereoselectivities in the alkynyl-Prins reaction are âŒ1.4â:â1 in favor of the cis-diastereomer. The stereochemistry of one cis-product was verified by X-ray crystallographic analysis and a second structure was also verified by X-ray analysis
Bone and Cartilage Compression Simulator
A device was developed that delivers mechanical loads to bone and soft tissue samples under physiological conditions to aid in the research of tissue engineering bone and cartilage. To begin the design process, a Network Diagram and Gantt Chart were produced to create a general timeline for the project to follow. This allowed us to measure our progress and determine what effects (if any) delays could have on our project
Vegetation studies on Vandenberg Air Force Base, California
Vandenburg Air Force Base, located in coastal central California with an area of 98,400 ac, contains resources of considerable biological significance. Available information on the vegetation and flora of Vandenburg is summarized and new data collected in this project are presented. A bibliography of 621 references dealing with vegetation and related topics related to Vanderburg was compiled from computer and manual literature searches and a review of past studies of the base. A preliminary floristic list of 642 taxa representing 311 genera and 80 families was compiled from past studies and plants identified in the vegetation sampling conducted in this project. Fifty-two special interest plant species are known to occur or were suggested to occur. Vegetation was sampled using permanent plots and transects in all major plant communities including chaparral, Bishop pine forest, tanbark oak forest, annual grassland, oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, purple sage scrub, coastal dune scrub, coastal dunes, box elder riparian woodland, will riparian woodland, freshwater marsh, salt marsh, and seasonal wetlands. Comparison of the new vegetation data to the compostie San Diego State University data does not indicate major changes in most communities since the original study. Recommendations are made for additional studies needed to maintain and extend the environmental data base and for management actions to improve resource protection
NearâInfrared Classification Spectroscopy: \u3ci\u3eH\u3c/i\u3eâband Spectra of Fundamental MK Standards
We present a catalog of H-band spectra for 85 stars of approximately solar abundance observed at a resolving power of 3000 with the KPNO Mayall 4 m Fourier Transform Spectrometer. The atlas covers spectral types O7M5 and luminosity classes IV as defined in the MK system. We identify both atomic and molecular indices and line ratios that are temperature and luminosity sensitive, allowing spectral classification to be carried out in the H-band. The line ratios permit spectral classification in the presence of continuum excess emission, which is commonly found in premain-sequence or evolved stars. We demonstrate that with spectra of R = 1000 obtained at signal-to-noise ratio \u3e50, it is possible to derive spectral types within ±2 subclasses for late-type stars. These data are available electronically through the Astronomical Data Center in addition to being served on the World Wide Web
Frequency dispersion reduction and bond conversion on n-type GaAs by in situ surface oxide removal and passivation
The method of surface preparation on n-type GaAs, even with the presence of an amorphous-Si interfacial passivation layer, is shown to be a critical step in the removal of accumulation capacitance frequency dispersion. In situ deposition and analysis techniques were used to study different surface preparations, including NH4OH, Si-flux, and atomic hydrogen exposures, as well as Si passivation depositions prior to in situ atomic layer deposition of Al2O3. AsâO bonding was removed and a bond conversion process with Si deposition is observed. The accumulation capacitance frequency dispersion was removed only when a Si interlayer and a specific surface clean were combined

Serum Bovine Immunoglobulins Improve Inflammation and Gut Barrier Function in Persons with HIV and Enteropathy on Suppressive ART.
BackgroundSystemic inflammation persists in chronic HIV infection and is associated with increased rates of non-AIDS events such as cardiovascular and liver disease. Increased gut permeability and systemic exposure to microbial products are key drivers of this inflammation. Serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin/protein isolate (SBI) supports gut healing in other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease.MethodsIn this randomized, double-blind study, participants receiving suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART) with chronic diarrhea received placebo or SBI at 2.5 g BID or 5 g BID for 4 weeks, followed by a 20-week placebo-free extension phase with SBI at either 2.5 or 5 g BID. Intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP), zonulin, flagellin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and LPS-binding protein, and inflammatory markers were measured by ELISA or multiplex assays. Non-parametric tests were used for analysis.ResultsOne hundred three participants completed the study. By week 24 SBI significantly decreased circulating levels of I-FABP (-0.35 ng/ÎŒL, P=0.002) and zonulin (-4.90 ng/ÎŒL, P=0.003), suggesting improvement in gut damage, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) (-0.40 pg/ÎŒL, P=0.002), reflecting improvement in systemic inflammation. In participants with the lowest quartile of CD4+ T-cell counts at baseline (189-418 cells/ÎŒL), CD4+ T-cell counts increased significantly (26 cells/ÎŒL; P=0.002).ConclusionsOral SBI may decrease inflammation and warrants further exploration as a potential strategy to improve gut integrity and decrease systemic inflammation among persons receiving prolonged suppressive ART
