Sensitivity analysis of the reactor safety study
Originally presented as the first author's thesis, (M.S.) in the M.I.T. Dept. of Nuclear Engineering, 1979.The Reactor Safety Study (RSS) or Wash-1400 developed a
methodology estimating the public risk from light water nuclear
reactors. In order to give further insights into this study,
a sensitivity analysis has been performed to determine the
significant contributors to risk for both the PWR and BWR.
The sensitivity to variation of the point values of the failure
probabilities reported in the RSS was determined for the
safety systems identified therein, as well as for many of the
generic classes from which individual failures contributed to
system failures. Increasing as well as decreasing point values
were considered. An analysis of the sensitivity to increasing
uncertainty in system failure probabilities was also performed.
The sensitivity parameters chosen were release category prob-
abilities, core melt probability, and the risk parameters of
early fatalities, latent cancers and total property damage.
The latter three are adequate for describing all public risks
identified in the RSS. The results indicate reductions of
public risk by less than a factor of two for factor reductions
in system or generic failure probabilities as hignh as one hundred.
There also appears to be more benefit in monitoring the most
sensitive systems to verify adherence to RSS failure rates
than to backfitting present reactors. The sensitivity analysis
results do indicate, however, possible benefits in reducing

Effects of space shuttle launches STS-1 through STS-9 on terrestrial vegetation of John F. Kennedy Space Center, Florida
Space Shuttle launches produce a cloud containing hydrochloric acid (HCl), aluminum oxide (Al203), and other substances. Acidities of less than 0.5 pH have been measured routinely in association with the launch cloud. In an area of about 22 ha regularly exposed to the exhaust cloud during most Shuttle launches, acute vegetation damage has resulted from the first nine Shuttle launches. Changes include loss of sensitive species, loss of plant community structure, reduction in total cover, and replacement of some species by weedy invaders. Community level changes define a retrogressive sequence. One-time impacts to strand and dune vegetation occurred after launches of STS-8 and STS-9. Acute vegetation damage occurred especially to sensitive species. Within six months, however, recovery was nearly complete. Sensitivity of species to the launch cloud was partially predicted by previous laboratory studies. Far-field acidic and dry fallout from the cloud as it rises to stabilization and moves with the prevailing winds causes vegetation spotting. Damage from this deposition is minor; typically at most 1% to 5% of leaf surface area is affected. No plant mortality or community changes have occurred from far-field deposition
The Observed Trend of Boron and Oxygen in Field Stars of the Disk
Oxygen abundances are derived in a sample of 13 field F and G dwarfs and
subgiants with metallicities in the range of -0.75 < [Fe/H] < +0.15. This is
the same sample of stars for which boron abundances have been derived earlier
from archived spectra obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. In a log-log
comparison of the B versus the O abundances, a slope of m(BO)=1.39 is found,
indicating that in the disk, the abundance of B relative to O is intermediate
between primary and secondary production (hybrid behavior). This relation of B
versus O for disk stars is compared to the same relation for halo stars.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. In press to The Astronomical Journal

Infrared High-Resolution Spectroscopy of Post-AGB Circumstellar Disks. I. HR 4049 - The Winnowing Flow Observed?
High-resolution infrared spectroscopy in the 2.3-4.6 micron region is
reported for the peculiar A supergiant, single-lined spectroscopic binary HR
4049. Lines from the CO fundamental and first overtone, OH fundamental, and
several H2O vibration-rotation transitions have been observed in the
near-infrared spectrum. The spectrum of HR 4049 appears principally in emission
through the 3 and 4.6 micron region and in absorption in the 2 micron region.
The 4.6 micron spectrum shows a rich 'forest' of emission lines. All the
spectral lines observed in the 2.3-4.6 micron spectrum are shown to be
circumbinary in origin. The presence of OH and H2O lines confirm the
oxygen-rich nature of the circumbinary gas which is in contrast to the
previously detected carbon-rich material. The emission and absorption line
profiles show that the circumbinary gas is located in a thin, rotating layer
near the dust disk. The properties of the dust and gas circumbinary disk and
the spectroscopic orbit yield masses for the individual stars, M_AI~0.58 Msolar
and M_MV~0.34 Msolar. Gas in the disk also has an outward flow with a velocity
of 1 km/s. The severe depletion of refractory elements but near-solar
abundances of volatile elements observed in HR 4049 results from abundance
winnowing. The separation of the volatiles from the grains in the disk and the
subsequent accretion by the star are discussed. Contrary to prior reports, the
HR 4049 carbon and oxygen isotopic abundances are typical AGB values:

Fire, Hurricane and Carbon Dioxide: Effects on Net Primary Production of a Subtropical Woodland
Disturbance affects most terrestrial ecosystems and has the potential to shape their responses to chronic environmental change. Scrub-oak vegetation regenerating from fire disturbance in subtropical Florida was exposed to experimentally elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration (+350ll-1) using open-top chambers for 11yr, punctuated by hurricane disturbance in year 8. Here, we report the effects of elevated CO2 on aboveground and belowground net primary productivity (NPP) and nitrogen (N) cycling during this experiment. The stimulation of NPP and N uptake by elevated CO2 peaked within 2yr after disturbance by fire and hurricane, when soil nutrient availability was high. The stimulation subsequently declined and disappeared, coincident with low soil nutrient availability and with a CO2-induced reduction in the N concentration of oak stems. These findings show that strong growth responses to elevated CO2 can be transient, are consistent with a progressively limited response to elevated CO2 interrupted by disturbance, and illustrate the importance of biogeochemical responses to extreme events in modulating ecosystem responses to global environmental change
The 'Forbidden' Abundance of Oxygen in the Sun
We reexamine closely the solar photospheric line at 6300 A, which is
attributed to a forbidden line of neutral oxygen, and is widely used in
analyses of other late-type stars.
We use a three-dimensional time-dependent hydrodynamical model solar
atmosphere which has been tested successfully against observed granulation
patterns and an array of absorption lines. We show that the solar line is a
blend with a Ni I line, as previously suggested but oftentimes neglected.
Thanks to accurate atomic data on the [O I] and Ni I lines we are able to
derive an accurate oxygen abundance for the Sun: log epsilon (O) = 8.69 +/-
0.05 dex, a value at the lower end of the distribution of previously published
abundances, but in good agreement with estimates for the local interstellar
medium and hot stars in the solar neighborhood. We conclude by discussing the
implication of the Ni I blend on oxygen abundances derived from the [O I] 6300

Psychological attachment to the group: Cross-cultural differences in organizational identification and subjective norms as predictors of workers' turnover intentions
Two studies wed the theory of reasoned action, social identity theory, and Ashforth and Mael's work on organizational identification to predict turnover intentions in Japanese and British commercial and academic organizations. In both studies and in both countries, the authors expected and found that identification with the organization substantially and significantly predicted turnover intentions. Attitudes predicted intentions only in Study 2, and subjective norms significantly predicted intentions across both studies. The authors hypothesized that subjective norms would be a significantly stronger predictor of turnover intentions in a collectivist setting. This prediction was supported. Although social identity is strongly associated with turnover intentions across both cultures, the subjective normative aspects of group membership are significantly more strongly associated in the Japanese organizations
