Viewpoint (Art and Descriptive Text)
This art was created as part of a class zine project. The concept/direction for the zine was generated by a group of students, then selected by the class for use. This cover was a collaborative interpretation of that concept conceived of by Kaylyn Hill, Stacey Roten, Siyu Wang, and Jimmy Wilder. The design was executed by Kaylyn Hill.
The problem the class addressed was: Imagine that hundreds of designers used their skills and creativity to respond to the most important and newsworthy issues of today. This collection will be the focus of a blog, a book, an exhibition, a documentary... (it doesnât really matter what format or media it might be, ultimately). How would this kind of graphic statementâthis power used for good, for awareness, for protest, etc.âbe expressed? What would you title it? What visual treatment might be applied to or accompany that title?
The Viewpoint #nofilter concept reflects the act of looking closely and critically at world events and responding with honesty. Therefore, there are many perspectives of the world shown but within a form that also resembles an eye, a target, a print registration mark, etc.
The art was modified for the cover of PURE Insights, but is presented here in the original form
A Deployment of Voice-over-IP Using Lone
Computational biologists agree that multimodal epistemologies are an interesting new topic in the field of robotics, and cyberneticists concur. After years of significant research into interrupts, we prove the investigation of object-oriented languages. We present new collaborative archetypes, which we call Lone
The Dependence of the Soft X-ray Properties of LMXBs on the Metallicity of Their Environment
We determine the X-ray spectral properties of a sample of low-mass X-ray
binaries (LMXBs) which reside in globular clusters of M31, as well as five
LMXBs in Galactic globular clusters and in the Large Magellanic Cloud using the
ROSAT PSPC. We find a trend in the X-ray properties of the LMXBs as a function
of globular cluster metallicity. The spectra of LMXBs become progressively
softer as the metallicity of its environment increases. The one M31 globular
cluster LMXB in our sample which has a metallicity greater than solar has
spectral properties similar to those of LMXBs in the bulge of M31, but markedly
different from those which reside in low metallicity globular clusters, both in
M31 and the Galaxy. The spectral properties of this high metallicity LMXB is
also similar to those of X-ray faint early-type galaxies. This lends support to
the claim that a majority of the X-ray emission from these X-ray faint
early-type galaxies results from LMXBs and not hot gas, as is the case in their
X-ray bright counterparts.Comment: 5 pages, 2 embedded Postscript figures, uses emulateapj.sty,

Upgrades to the International Space Station Urine Processor Assembly
The ISS Urine Processor Assembly (UPA) began operations in November 2008. Though the UPA has successfully generated distillate from crew urine, several modifications and upgrades have been implemented to improve overall system performance throughout the years. Current and future upgrades to the UPA will continue to focus on improved system performance and reliability, focusing primarily on the Distillation Assembly and upgrades to the UPA vacuum pump. Work towards a flight demonstration experiment of a vacuum pump utilizing scroll pump technologies has also continued forward. The following paper discusses progress on these various concepts, including the implementation of a more reliable drive belt, improved methods for managing condensate in the stationary bowl of the Distillation Assembly, installation of improved centrifuge bearings, implementation of a liquid level sensor, and upgrades to the UPA vacuum pump
Genetic mapping in mice identifies DMBT1 as a candidate modifier of mammary tumors and breast cancer risk
Low-penetrance breast cancer susceptibility alleles seem to play a significant role in breast cancer risk but are difficult to identify in human cohorts. A genetic screen of 176 N2 backcross progeny of two Trp53+/- strains, BALB/c and C57BL/6, which differ in their susceptibility to mammary tumors, identified a modifier of mammary tumor susceptibility in an âŒ25-Mb interval on mouse chromosome 7 (designated SuprMam1). Relative to heterozygotes, homozygosity for BALB/c alleles of SuprMam1 significantly decreased mammary tumor latency from 70.7 to 61.1 weeks and increased risk twofold (P = 0.002). Dmbt1 (deleted in malignant brain tumors 1) was identified as a candidate modifier gene within the SuprMam1 interval because it was differentially expressed in mammary tissues from BALB/c-Trp53+/- and C57BL/6-Trp53+/- mice. Dmbt1 mRNA and protein was reduced in mammary glands of the susceptible BALB/c mice. Immunohistochemical staining demonstrated that DMBT1 protein expression was also significandy reduced in normal breast tissue from women with breast cancer (staining score, 1.8; n = 46) compared with cancer-free controls (staining score, 3.9; n = 53; P < 0.0001). These experiments demonstrate the use of Trp53+/- mice as a sensitized background to screen for low-penetrance modifiers of cancer. The results identify a novel mammary tumor susceptibility locus in mice and support a role for DMBT1 in suppression of mammary tumors in both mice and women
Yalanji-Warranga Kaban: Yalanji people of the rainforest fire management book
The tropical rainforest, beaches, reefs, and mountain ranges stretching along the coast between Mossman and the Annan River are the homelands of Eastern Yalanji people (bama). We have been here since the beginning in the dreaming. Stories of the lives of past generations of Eastern Yalanji bama are held in every mangrove inlet, in the roaring torrents and giant mountain boulders, and in the silent sliding streams. We Yalanji bama are still here today and hold strongly to our Law, culture and language in building for the future.
"Kulu-Yanlanji" literally means speakers of Yalanji language. There are several dialects within this language.
Yalanji bama are related to each other and to different parts of out lands through out customary law. Only those people with the right connections to a particular place can speak for that country, for that place. The tract of country belonging to our particular family group is known as our "clan estate".
To know your role and your place in Yalanji society, you must know your country, your clan estate and your kin
Measurement of the cosmic ray spectrum above eV using inclined events detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory
A measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum for energies exceeding
eV is presented, which is based on the analysis of showers
with zenith angles greater than detected with the Pierre Auger
Observatory between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013. The measured spectrum
confirms a flux suppression at the highest energies. Above
eV, the "ankle", the flux can be described by a power law with
index followed by
a smooth suppression region. For the energy () at which the
spectral flux has fallen to one-half of its extrapolated value in the absence
of suppression, we find
eV.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO
