    Prenatal, birth and early life predictors of sedentary behavior in young people: a systematic review

    BACKGROUND: Our aim was to systematically summarize the evidence on whether prenatal, birth and early life factors up to 6 years of age predict sedentary behavior in young people (≤18 years). METHODS: PRISMA guidelines were followed, and searches were conducted in PubMed, SPORTDiscus, EMBASE and Web of Science up to December 1, 2015. We included observational (non-intervention) and longitudinal studies, that reported data on the association between one or more of the potential predictors and objectively or subjectively measured sedentary behavior. Study quality was assessed using a formal checklist and data extraction was performed using standardized forms independently by two researchers. RESULTS: More than 18,000 articles were screened, and 16 studies, examining 10 different predictors, were included. Study quality was variable (0.36-0.95). Two studies suggest that heritability and BMI in children aged 2-6 years were significant predictors of sedentary behavior later in life, while four and seven studies suggest no evidence for an association between gestational age, birth weight and sedentary behavior respectively. There was insufficient evidence whether other prenatal, birth and early life factors act as predictors of later sedentary behavior in young people. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that heritability and early childhood BMI may predict sedentary behavior in young people. However, small number of studies included and methodological limitations, including subjective and poorly validated sedentary behavior assessment, limits the conclusions.     The Infrared Properties of Submillimeter Galaxies: Clues From Ultra-Deep 70 Micron Imaging

    We present 70 micron properties of submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) North field. Out of thirty submillimeter galaxies (S_850 > 2 mJy) in the central GOODS-N region, we find two with secure 70 micron detections. These are the first 70 micron detections of SMGs. One of the matched SMGs is at z ~ 0.5 and has S_70/S_850 and S_70/S_24 ratios consistent with a cool galaxy. The second SMG (z = 1.2) has infrared-submm colors which indicate it is more actively forming stars. We examine the average 70 micron properties of the SMGs by performing a stacking analysis, which also allows us to estimate that S_850 > 2 mJy SMGs contribute 9 +- 3% of the 70 micron background light. The S_850/S_70 colors of the SMG population as a whole is best fit by cool galaxies, and because of the redshifting effects these constraints are mainly on the lower z sub-sample. We fit Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) to the far-infrared data points of the two detected SMGs and the average low redshift SMG (z_{median}= 1.4). We find that the average low-z SMG has a cooler dust temperature than local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) of similar luminosity and an SED which is best fit by scaled up versions of normal spiral galaxies. The average low-z SMG is found to have a typical dust temperature T = 21 -- 33 K and infrared luminosity L_{8-1000 micron} = 8.0 \times 10^11 L_sun.     Revisiting the role of H+ in chemotactic signaling of sperm

During chemotaxis, sperm change their swimming behavior in a gradient of the chemoattractant that is released by the eggs, and finally sperm accumulate near the eggs. A well established model to study chemotaxis is the sea urchin Arbacia punctulata. Resact, the chemoattractant of Arbacia, is a peptide that binds to a receptor guanylyl cyclase. The signaling pathway underlying chemotaxis is still poorly understood. Stimulation of sperm with resact induces a variety of cellular events, including a rise in intracellular pH (pHi) and an influx of Ca2+; the Ca2+ entry is essential for the chemotactic behavior. Previous studies proposed that the influx of Ca2+ is initiated by the rise in pHi. According to this proposal, a cGMP-induced hyperpolarization activates a voltage-dependent Na+/H+ exchanger that expels H+ from the cell. Because some aspects of the proposed signaling pathway are inconsistent with recent results (Kaupp, U.B., J. Solzin, J.E. Brown, A. Helbig, V. Hagen, M. Beyermann, E. Hildebrand, and I. Weyand. 2003. Nat. Cell Biol. 5:109–117), we reexamined the role of protons in chemotaxis of sperm using kinetic measurements of the changes in pHi and intracellular Ca2+ concentration. We show that for physiological concentrations of resact (<25 pM), the influx of Ca2+ precedes the rise in pHi. Moreover, buffering of pHi completely abolishes the resact-induced pHi signal, but leaves the Ca2+ signal and the chemotactic motor response unaffected. We conclude that an elevation of pHi is required neither to open Ca2+-permeable channels nor to control the chemotactic behavior. Intracellular release of cGMP from a caged compound does not cause an increase in pHi, indicating that the rise in pHi is induced by cellular events unrelated to cGMP itself, but probably triggered by the consumption and subsequent replenishment of GTP. These results show that the resact-induced rise in pHi is not an obligatory step in sperm chemotactic signaling. A rise in pHi is also not required for peptide-induced Ca2+ entry into sperm of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. Speract, a peptide of S. purpuratus may act as a chemoattractant as well or may serve functions other than chemotaxis.This work was supported by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft

    Combined wind measurements by two different lidar instruments in the Arctic middle atmosphere

    During a joint campaign in January 2009, the Rayleigh/Mie/Raman (RMR) lidar and the sodium lidar at the ALOMAR Observatory (69° N, 16° E) in Northern Norway were operated simultaneously for more than 40 h, collecting data for wind measurements in the middle atmosphere from 30 up to 110 km altitude. As both lidars share the same receiving telescopes, the upper altitude range of the RMR lidar and the lower altitude range of the sodium lidar overlap in the altitude region of ≈80–85 km. For this overlap region we are thus able to present the first simultaneous wind measurements derived from two different lidar instruments. The comparison of winds derived by RMR and sodium lidar is excellent for long integration times of 10 h as well as shorter ones of 1 h. Combination of data from both lidars allows identifying wavy structures between 30 and 110 km altitude, whose amplitudes increase with height. We have also performed vertical wind measurements and measurements of the same horizontal wind component using two independent lasers and telescopes of the RMR lidar and show how to use this data to calibrate and validate the wind retrieval. For the latter configuration we found a good agreement of the results but also identified inhomogeneities in the horizontal wind at about 55 km altitude of up to 20 ms&lt;sup&gt;−1&lt;/sup&gt; for an integration time of nearly 4 h. Such small-scale inhomogeneities in the horizontal wind field are an essential challenge when comparing data from different instruments

    Extending the limits of globule detection -- ISOPHOT Serendipity Survey Observations of interstellar clouds

    A faint I170=4I_{\rm 170}=4 MJysr1^{-1} bipolar globule was discovered with the ISOPHOT 170 μ\mum Serendipity Survey (ISOSS). ISOSS J 20246+6541 is a cold (Td14.5T_{\rm d}\approx 14.5 K) FIR source without an IRAS pointsource counterpart. In the Digitized Sky Survey B band it is seen as a 3\arcmin size bipolar nebulosity with an average excess surface brightness of 26\approx 26 mag/\square \arcsec . The CO column density distribution determined by multi-isotopic, multi-level CO measurements with the IRAM-30m telescope agrees well with the optical appearance. An average hydrogen column density of 1021\approx 10^{21}cm2^{-2} was derived from both the FIR and CO data. Using a kinematic distance estimate of 400 pc the NLTE modelling of the CO, HCO+^+, and CS measurements gives a peak density of 104\approx 10^4cm3^{-3}. The multiwavelength data characterise ISOSS 20246+6541 as a representative of a class of globules which has not been discovered so far due to their small angular size and low 100μ\mu m brightness. A significant overabundance of 13^{13}CO is found X(13CO)150×X(C18O)X(^{13}CO) \ge 150\times X(C^{18}O). This is likely due to isotope selective chemical processes.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Signature of Gravity Waves in Polarization of the Microwave Background

    Using spin-weighted decomposition of polarization in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) we show that a particular combination of Stokes QQ and UU parameters vanishes for primordial fluctuations generated by scalar modes, but does not for those generated by primordial gravity waves. Because of this gravity wave detection is not limited by cosmic variance as in the case of temperature fluctuations. We present the exact expressions for various polarization power spectra, which are valid on any scale. Numerical evaluation in inflation-based models shows that the expected signal is of the order of 0.5 μK\mu K, which could be directly tested in future CMB experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, RevTeX, matches the accepted version (to appear in Phys.
