    Vancomycin versus Linezolid in the Treatment of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Meningitis

    Abstract Background: Vancomycin is the mainstay of treatment for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) meningitis. However, successful outcomes with linezolid have not been reported in a large series of patients. We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study to compare vancomycin with linezolid in the treatment of MRSA meningitis. Methods: We extracted data and outcomes for all adult patients (age > 18 years) with culture-proved MRSA meningitis who received vancomycin or linezolid between January 2006 and June 2011. A definite diagnosis of meningitis was based on the isolation of MRSA in at least one cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture and findings in CSF that are typical of the infection. Linezolid was given intravenously (IV) at a dosage of 600 mg q12h and vancomycin IV at 500 mg q6h. Results: A total of 8 patients with MRSA meningitis (5 male, 3 female; age [mean -SD] 61.6 -13.2 years) received vancomycin and 9 patients (7 male, 2 female; age 59.1 -15.6 years) received linezolid. All isolated strains of MRSA were susceptible to both vancomycin and linezolid. The rates of microbiologic success with linezolid or vancomycin, in terms of clearance of MRSA from CSF on day 5, were 7/9 and 2/8 (p = 0.044, Fisher exact test). No severe adverse events occurred in either treatment arm of the study. One-month survival of the patients in whom treatment was successful microbiologically was 2/2 in the vancomycin-treated group and 4/7 in the linezolidtreated group. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) data for vancomycin were available for 5/6 treatment failures with vancomycin, and vancomycin MIC values of these five strains were 2 mg/L. Conclusion: Analysis of the findings in the limited cohorts in our study suggests that linezolid is superior to vancomycin for treating MRSA meningitis, especially in cases in which there is a high MIC (2 mg/L) for vancomycin. A clinical study involving larger cohorts may increase the evidence available in relation to this question

    Araştırmanın amacı, 6.sınıf matematik öğretim programı ve sorumluluk değeri eğitim program tasarısının birleştirilerek etkililiğinin incelenmesidir. Araştırmada nicel ve nitel yöntemlerin bir arada olduğu karma model kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2018-2019 eğitim-öğretim yılında 6.sınıfta eğitim gören deney ve kontrol grubu oluşturmaktadır. Deney grubu 31 kişi ve kontrol grubu 31 kişi olarak çalışma grubu toplam 62 kişiden oluşmaktadır. Araştırma için seçilen sorumluluk değerine ait kazanımları içeren üç adet gerçek yaşam durumu matematik etkinliği deney grubu öğrencilerine uygulanmıştır. Etkinlikler Beykoz Şehit Hasan Kaya Ortaokulu öğrencileri ile haftada bir ders saati olacak şekilde toplam 3 hafta sürmüştür. Veri toplama aracı olarak etkinlikler öncesinde ve sonrasında araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen ön test ve son test ikilem durumu formları uygulanmıştır. Veri analizinde sorumluuk kazanımı içeren cevaplara 1 puan ve yanlış kabul edien cevaplara 0 puan verilmştir. Son test uygulamasından sonra deney grubu arasından seçilen 6 öğrenci ile bireysel görüşmeler yapılmıştır ve nitel veriler toplanmştır.Araştırmanın sonucunda elde edilen nicel ve nitel bulgulara göre matematik öğretim programı ile birleştirilmiş sorumluluk değeri etkinliklerinin öğrencilerin değer kazanımlarında bir değişikliğe neden olmadığı görülmüştür. Yapılan görüşmeler sonucunda uygulamanın değerler eğitimi etkinliklerine karşı olan ilgiyi arttırdığı fark edilmiştir. Bu durumda daha uzun süreli ve farklı değerlere ait kazanımları da içeren uygulamalar yapılarak olumlu sonuçlar elde edilmeye çalışılabilir. Akademik başarının ön planda olmadığı okul kültürleri oluşturulabilir.--------------------The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness on students while combining the 6th grade mathematics curriculum and responsibility value education program. There is specially designed mixed method is used which covers both quantitative and qualitative methods. In total, there are 62 6th grade students are involved to whom are separated in two as experimental group and control groups in between year 2018-2019. The responsibility behaviors in the students are measured with 3 different real life examples applied via mathematics activities on experimental group. The duration of activity is three weeks as lesson per week in Beykoz Şehit Hasan Kaya Secondary School. In this study, pre-test and post-test dilemma forms developed by researcher are used before and after the activities. After the post-test, individual interviews are conducted with randomly selected 6 students from the experimental group. According to the quantitative and qualitative findings obtained from the result of the research, it is clearly seen that the responsibility value activities combined with mathematics curriculum not cause any change on students' appreciation. In addition to this, the result of the interviews showed that activities increased interest towards values. Therefore, it is possible to obtain positive results by applying those activities in long-terms while also combining different values. By this way, the healthy school cultures can be created where academic success is not the first priority

    Classification of Electroencephalography Signals Recorded During Olfaction of Some Spices

Among these techniques, electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used because it is performed at a low cost without additional equipment and because of noninvasive method. in recent years, EEG signals recorded during olfaction based studies have been tried, but the response of the human brain to different odors has not been fully proven due to differences in experimental outputs and lack of odor use. in this study, to improve the use of limited odor types, EEG data recorded during the smelling of 4 natural oils ( mint, clove, thyme, rosemary) obtained by one %100 cold printing were used. After the EEG data set recorded from 3 subjects are preprocessed with unit change or minimum-maximum normalization, statistically based features were extracted from the signal. Then the dual combinations of these oils were classified with k-nearest neighborhood method and a 6 classification results were obtained for each subject. We calculated the average 72.66%, 72.27% and 70.40% SD for each subject.     Classification of Brain Responses to the Various Spice Odors

Additionally we investigated to find out which odor pair was the most discriminative by classifying all the combinations of odor pairs. the achieved classification accuracy rate of 75.96% showed that peppermint-clove odor pair was the most discriminative.
