Study of quiet turbofan STOL aircraft for short haul transportation
Conceptual designs of Quiet Turbofan STOL Short-Haul Transport Aircraft for the mid-1980 time period are developed and analyzed to determine their technical, operational, and economic feasibility. A matrix of aircraft using various high-lift systems and design parameters are considered. Variations in aircraft characteristics, airport geometry and location, and operational techniques are analyzed systematically to determine their effects on the market, operating economics, and community acceptance. In these studies, the total systems approach is considered to be critically important in analyzing the potential of STOL aircraft to reduce noise pollution and alleviate the increasing air corridor and airport congestion
Evaluation of enzyme immunoassays in the diagnosis of camel (Camelus dromedarius) trypanosomiasis:a preliminary investigation
Three enzyme immunoassays were used for the serodiagnosis of Trypanosoma evansi in camels in the Sudan in order to evaluate their ability to discriminate between infected and non-infected animals. Two assays were used for the detection of trypanosomal antibodies, one using specific anti-camel IgG conjugate and another using a non-specific Protein A conjugate. The third assay detected the presence of trypanosomal antigens using anti-T. evansi antibodies in a double antibody sandwich assay. Inspection of the frequency distribution of assay results suggested that the ELISA for circulating trypanosomal antibodies using specific antisera and the ELISA for circulating antigens can distinguish between non-infected camels and infected camels exhibiting patent infections or not. The ELISA using Protein A conjugate to bind non-specifically to camel immunoglobulin did not appear to discriminate between infected and non-infected animals

Slow plasmon modes in polymeric salt solutions
The dynamics of polymeric salt solutions are presented. The salt consists of
chains and , which are chemically different and interact with a
Flory-interaction parameter , the chain ends carry a positive
charge whereas the chain ends are modified by negative charges. The
static structure factor shows a peak corresponding to a micro phase separation.
At low momentum transfer, the interdiffusion mode is driven by electrostatics
and is of the plasmon-type, but with an unusually low frequency, easily
accessible by experiments. This is due to the polymer connectivity that
introduces high friction and amplifies the charge scattering thus allowing for
low charge densities. The interdiffusion mode shows a minimum (critical slowing
down) at finite when the interaction parameter increases we find then a low
frequency quasi-plateau.Comment: accepted in Europhys. Let
Effects of rotation on coolant passage heat transfer. Volume 1: Coolant passages with smooth walls
An experimental program was conducted to investigate heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics of rotating multipass passages, for configurations and dimensions typical of modern turbine blades. The immediate objective was the generation of a data base of heat transfer and pressure loss data required to develop heat transfer correlations and to assess computational fluid dynamic techniques for rotating coolant passages. Experiments were conducted in a smooth wall large scale heat transfer model
Prediction of indoor temperature in an institutional building
The importance of predicting building indoor temperature is inevitable to execute an effective energy management strategy in an institutional building. An accurate prediction of building indoor temperature not only contributes to improved thermal comfort conditions but also has a role in building heating and cooling energy conservation. To predict the indoor temperature accurately, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been used in this study because of its performance superiority to deal with the time-series data as cited in past studies. Network architecture is the most important part of ANN for predicting accurately without overfitting the data. In this study, as a part of determining the optimal network architecture, important input parameters related to the output has been sorted out first. Next, prediction models have been developed for building indoor temperature using real data. Initially, spring season of Australia was selected for data collection. During model development three different training algorithms have been used and the performance of these training algorithms has been evaluated in this study based on prediction accuracy, generalization capability and iteration time to train the algorithm. From results Lovenberg-Marquardt has been found the best-suited training algorithm for short-term prediction of indoor space temperature. Afterwards, residual analysis has been used as a technique to verify the validation result. Finally, the result has been justified by applying a similar approach to another building case and using two different weather data-sets of two different seasons: summer and winter of Australia
Galois theory and commutators
We prove that the relative commutator with respect to a subvariety of a
variety of Omega-groups introduced by the first author can be described in
terms of categorical Galois theory. This extends the known correspondence
between the Froehlich-Lue and the Janelidze-Kelly notions of central extension.
As an example outside the context of Omega-groups we study the reflection of
the category of loops to the category of groups where we obtain an
interpretation of the associator as a relative commutator.Comment: 14 page
Superabsorption of light via quantum engineering
Almost 60 years ago Dicke introduced the term superradiance to describe a
signature quantum effect: N atoms can collectively emit light at a rate
proportional to N^2. Even for moderate N this represents a significant increase
over the prediction of classical physics, and the effect has found applications
ranging from probing exciton delocalisation in biological systems, to
developing a new class of laser, and even in astrophysics. Structures that
super-radiate must also have enhanced absorption, but the former always
dominates in natural systems. Here we show that modern quantum control
techniques can overcome this restriction. Our theory establishes that
superabsorption can be achieved and sustained in certain simple nanostructures,
by trapping the system in a highly excited state while extracting energy into a
non-radiative channel. The effect offers the prospect of a new class of quantum
nanotechnology, capable of absorbing light many times faster than is currently
possible; potential applications of this effect include light harvesting and
photon detection. An array of quantum dots or a porphyrin ring could provide an
implementation to demonstrate this effect

Investigating mechanisms of social support effectiveness: The case of locomotion motivation
Although social support can entail costs, individuals with a higher locomotion orientation, who are motivated to move and take action, benefit from support. In two dyadic studies, we tested whether perceived movement towards important goals would mediate the effect of recipients’ locomotion motivation on positive outcomes in support contexts. In Study 1, couples completed a 10-day diary and then recalled support interactions with their partner after the diary period. In Study 2, couples engaged in laboratory support interactions for important goals. Perceived goal movement mediated the effect of higher (vs. lower) locomotion on self-reported ratings and coder ratings of support outcomes. Higher locomotion recipients may benefit in support contexts because they perceive they can move smoothly towards their goals
