Estimation of three-dimensional aerodynamic damping using CFD
Aeroelastic phenomena of stall flutter are the result of the negative aerodynamic damping associated with separated flow. From this basis, an investigation has been conducted to estimate the aerodynamic damping from a time-marching aeroelastic computation. An initial investigation is conducted on the NACA 0012 aerofoil section, before transition to 3D propellers and full aeroelastic calculations. Estimates of aerodynamic damping are presented, with a comparison made between URANS and SAS. Use of a suitable turbulence closure to allow for shedding of flow structures during stall is seen as critical in predicting negative damping estimations. From this investigation, it has been found that the SAS method is able to capture this for both the aerofoil and 3D test cases
Isoforms of transferrin in psoriasis patients abusing alcohol
The different isoforms of transferrin have been quantified by isoelectric
focusing in the sera of psoriasis patients with and without a history of
abusing alcohol. In both male and female psoriasis subjects abusing
alcohol, there were significant increases in the 2-sialylated forms by
comparison to the control subjects. Psoriasis patients who had no evidence
of alcohol abuse had similar profile for the isoforms of transferrin to
that of the controls. Other groups of patients with alcohol-induced tissue
damage, i.e. liver, brain or muscle, used as positive controls, similarly
showed significant increases in the 2-sialylated forms, by comparison to
controls. These results substantiate the current use of
carbohydrate-deficient transferrin as a sensitive marker of alcohol abuse,
particularly in subjects not drinking in excess of 60 g of ethanol/day but
showing alcohol-related psoriasis

Prevention of anxiety among at-risk children: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background
Anxiety disorders are common, often start in childhood and run a chronic course. As such there is a need for effective prevention.
Methods
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analyses of randomized, controlled trials to prevent the onset of anxiety disorders in âat riskâ young people. Diagnostic and symptom outcomes were examined. Putative moderators were tested as was publication bias.
Results
We included 16 trials (2545 young people). Two trials reported diagnostic outcomes, and significant effects were found for these at end-of-programme (RR = .09, 95%CI = .02 to .16), 6- (RR = .17, 95%CI = .06 to .27) and 12-month (RR = .31, 95%CI .17 to .45) follow-ups. Based on 16 trials, improved anxiety symptoms were significant compared to nonattention controls only, with small effect sizes reported by young people at the end-of-programmes, 6- and 12-month follow-ups; and by parents at the end of the programmes and 12-, but not 6-, month follow-ups. There was no evidence of significant moderation or publication bias.
Conclusions
Fourteen studies included children and young people who presented with elevated anxiety symptoms, but anxiety disorder was not ruled out in the participants in these studies. Hence, these studies might be reporting results of mixed prevention/early intervention programmes. Prevention programmes that target developmental risk factors, not only disorder maintaining factors, appear most promising. The clinically meaningful impact of anxiety disorder prevention programmes remains unknown
Conductance behavior of tetraphenyl-Aza-Bodipys
We studied the electrical conductance of single-molecule junctions formed from molecular wires with four anchor groups. Three tetraphenyl-aza-BODIPYs with four or two thiomethyl anchor groups were synthesized, and their single-molecule conductance was measured using break-junction-STM. Using DFT based calculations these compounds were shown to display a combination of a high and low conductance, depending on the molecule's connectivity in the junction. A scissor correction is employed to obtain the corrected HOMO-LUMO gaps and a tight binding model (TBM) is used to highlight the role of transport through the pi system of the tetraphenyl-aza-BODIPY central unit. The three higher-conductance geometries follow the sequence 3 > 4 > 2, which demonstrates that their conductances are correlated with the number of anchors
Climate change refugia for the flora and fauna of England
A variety of evidence suggests that species have, in the past, been able to withstand the effects of climatic change in localised environments known as refugia, where specific environmental conditions acted as a buffer against broader-scale climatic changes.
Therefore, an important question for conservation is whether refugia might exist under current and future anthropogenic climate change. If there are areas that are likely to remain relatively climatically stable and so enable species to persist despite climate change making surrounding areas unsuitable, identifying and protecting these places will be an important part of future conservation strategies.
This report is part of a project that is investigating this question. The report was commissioned to identify the characteristics of potential refugia, to investigate evidence for the existence of contemporary refugia by analysing patterns of local persistence and disappearance of over 1000 species across a range of taxa, and to identify sites in England with the potential to function as refugia for different taxonomic groups at a range of spatial scales
Induction and migration of cryptic/defective Salmonella enterica prophages as a consequence of infection with lytic phages is an additional factor in stability of a coevolutionary vector
The influence of infection of natural isolates of Salmonella enterica with lytic (nonlysogenic) phages on the expression of resident cryptic or defective prophages in host bacteria was studied. The induction of defective/cryptic phages after infection with nonlysogenic phages and packaging of bacterial chromosomal fragments in capsids of defective phages is demonstrated. This may lead to migration and wide distribution of both the genomes of defective phages per se and various fragments of the bacterial chromosome (including pathogenic islands) in new bacterial strains with concomitant change of their properties, the acquired new features of pathogenicity among them.This work was supported by EC PhageVet-P (contract no. Professionalism, Golf Coaching and a Master of Science Degree: A commentary
As a point of reference I congratulate Simon Jenkins on tackling the issue of professionalism in coaching. As he points out coaching is not a profession, but this does not mean that coaching would not benefit from going through a professionalization process. As things stand I find that the stimulus article unpacks some critically important issues of professionalism, broadly within the context of golf coaching. However, I am not sure enough is made of understanding what professional (golf) coaching actually is nor how the development of a professional golf coach can be facilitated by a Master of Science Degree (M.Sc.). I will focus my commentary on these two issues
