In addition to other data, this report gathered 65 samples from Waller Creek to develop a table on present strontium isotope ratios.Pollutant transport from municipal solid waste landfills is most often caused by water movement through waste to natural groundwater and is measured directly in landfill leachate collection systems and downgradient wells, seeps, and springs. These data indicate the source of groundwater and may dictate alternate management for pollutant attenuation. Following remediation, the Mabel Davis landfill was monitored through comparison of leachate volume, rainfall, and well water levels. In addition, water chemistry analyses were conducted including isotopic ratios related to source waters. Data collected from these investigations indicates the St. Elmo Terrace Deposit is the source of natural groundwater on the site. It also appears that this natural shallow groundwater is the source for Mabel Davis seep and the observed fluctuation in leachate volume. As a result, leachate volumes will continue to fluctuate with seasonal rainfall amount with large amount of leachate being generated during wet periods and low leachate amounts during drought conditions. Solid Waste Services may want to consider alternatives for management of remediated landfill cover to redirect infiltrating rainfall and ultimately reduce production of leachate to within design parameters.Waller Creek Working Grou

Results of prototype software development for automation of shuttle proximity operations

The effort involves demonstration of expert system technology application to Shuttle rendezvous operations in a high-fidelity, real-time simulation environment. The JSC Systems Engineering Simulator (SES) served as the test bed for the demonstration. Rendezvous applications were focused on crew procedures and monitoring of sensor health and trajectory status. Proximity operations applications were focused on monitoring, crew advisory, and control of the approach trajectory. Guidance, Navigation, and Control areas of emphasis included the approach, transition and stationkeeping guidance, and laser docking sensor navigation. Operator interface displays for monitor and control functions were developed. A rule-based expert system was developed to manage the relative navigation system/sensors for nominal operations and simple failure contingencies. Testing resulted in the following findings; (1) the developed guidance is applicable for operations with LVLH stabilized targets; (2) closing rates less than 0.05 feet per second are difficult to maintain due to the Shuttle translational/rotational cross-coupling; (3) automated operations result in reduced propellant consumption and plume impingement effects on the target as compared to manual operations; and (4) braking gates are beneficial for trajectory management. A versatile guidance design was demonstrated. An accurate proximity operations sensor/navigation system to provide relative attitude information within 30 feet is required and redesign of the existing Shuttle digital autopilot should be considered to reduce the cross-coupling effects. This activity has demonstrated the feasibility of automated Shuttle proximity operations with the Space Station Freedom. Indications are that berthing operations as well as docking can be supported

Small Aviation Business Success Strategies for Profitability

Ninety-five percent of all aviation businesses are small businesses; from 2009-2012, small aviation business operations decreased by 10.2% and resulted in a loss of $4.4 billion in revenue. The purpose for this multiunit case study was to explore what strategies small aviation businesses leaders used to reduce or control operating expenses for profitability. The sample comprised 3 small aviation businesses located in Middle Tennessee. The conceptual framework for this study built upon systems theory and sustainability theory. The data were collected through semistructured interviews and company documents. Member checking was completed to strengthen creditability and trustworthiness. Based on the methodological triangulation of the data sources collected, 5 emergent themes were identified after completing the 5 stages of data analysis: buying or purchasing power, being customer focused, having the right employees, having the right equipment, and leadership. When small aviation business owners incorporate these themes into their business model, they may increase the prosperity of their companies, the employees, their families, the surrounding communities, and the local economy. The findings from the study may contribute to social change by providing insights and strategies for small aviation business leaders in reducing operating costs for profitability. By reducing operating expenses, small aviation business leaders will have more money to invest in the local community and the economy
