    A quasi‐experimental investigation of differences between face‐to‐face and videoconference interviews in an actual selection process

    Videoconference interviews are now integral to many selection processes. Theoretical arguments and empirical findings suggest that videoconference interviews may lead to different interview performance ratings in comparison to Face-to-Face (FTF) interviews. This has led to the question of the comparability of the psychometric properties of videoconferences and FTF interviews. However, evidence from actual selection processes stems from the beginning of the century, and recent findings predominantly stem from simulated interview contexts. We present insights from an actual selection process within a large European organization where we had the unique opportunity for a quasi-experimental investigation of differences between videoconference and FTF interviews. Initially, the organization conducted FTF interviews, and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the interviews were conducted via videoconference. We examine mean differences in applicant performance ratings and evidence for response format-related validity differences. There were only small, non-significant mean differences and no evidence for response format related validity differences. We discuss possible causes for discrepancies in our findings compared to previous research. Furthermore, we conclude that downstream consequences of differences between FTF and videoconference interviews may be lower than previously expected. We end with a call for research on the interaction between technology-design and selection-tool-design features

    Some Advice for Psychologists Who Want to Work With Computer Scientists on Big Data

    This article is based on conversations from the project “Big Data in Psychological Assessment” (BDPA) funded by the European Union, which was initiated because of the advances in data science and artificial intelligence that offer tremendous opportunities for personnel assessment practice in handling and interpreting this kind of data. We argue that psychologists and computer scientists can benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration. This article aims to inform psychologists who are interested in working with computer scientists about the potentials of interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as the challenges such as differing terminologies, foci of interest, data quality standards, approaches to data analyses, and diverging publication practices. Finally, we provide recommendations preparing psychologists who want to engage in collaborations with computer scientists. We argue that psychologists should proactively approach computer scientists, learn computer scientific fundamentals, appreciate that research interests are likely to converge, and prepare novice psychologists for a data-oriented scientific future

    A quantitative method for detection of spliced X-box binding protein-1 (XBP1) mRNA as a measure of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress

    Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is increasingly recognized as an important mechanism in a wide range of diseases including cystic fibrosis, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, there is an increased need for reliable and quantitative markers for detection of ER stress in human tissues and cells. Accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum can cause ER stress, which leads to the activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR). UPR signaling involves splicing of X-box binding protein-1 (XBP1) mRNA, which is frequently used as a marker for ER stress. In most studies, the splicing of the XBP1 mRNA is visualized by gel electrophoresis which is laborious and difficult to quantify.     Smoking cessation and bronchial epithelial remodelling in COPD: a cross-sectional study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is associated with bronchial epithelial changes, including squamous cell metaplasia and goblet cell hyperplasia. These features are partially attributed to activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Whereas smoking cessation reduces respiratory symptoms and lung function decline in COPD, inflammation persists. We determined epithelial proliferation and composition in bronchial biopsies from current and ex-smokers with COPD, and its relation to duration of smoking cessation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>114 COPD patients were studied cross-sectionally: 99 males/15 females, age 62 ± 8 years, median 42 pack-years, no corticosteroids, current (n = 72) or ex-smokers (n = 42, median cessation duration 3.5 years), postbronchodilator FEV<sub>1 </sub>63 ± 9% predicted. Squamous cell metaplasia (%), goblet cell (PAS/Alcian Blue<sup>+</sup>) area (%), proliferating (Ki-67<sup>+</sup>) cell numbers (/mm basement membrane), and EGFR expression (%) were measured in intact epithelium of bronchial biopsies.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Ex-smokers with COPD had significantly less epithelial squamous cell metaplasia, proliferating cell numbers, and a trend towards reduced goblet cell area than current smokers with COPD (p = 0.025, p = 0.001, p = 0.081, respectively), but no significant difference in EGFR expression. Epithelial features were not different between short-term quitters (<3.5 years) and current smokers. Long-term quitters (≥3.5 years) had less goblet cell area than both current smokers and short-term quitters (medians: 7.9% vs. 14.4%, p = 0.005; 7.9% vs. 13.5%, p = 0.008; respectively), and less proliferating cell numbers than current smokers (2.8% vs. 18.6%, p < 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Ex-smokers with COPD had less bronchial epithelial remodelling than current smokers, which was only observed after long-term smoking cessation (>3.5 years).</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>NCT00158847</p

    A masked negative self-esteem? : Implicit and explicit self-esteem in patients with Narcissistic Personality Disorder

    The mask model of narcissism states that the narcissistic traits of patients with NPD are the result of a compensatory reaction to underlying ego fragility. This model assumes that high explicit self-esteem masks low implicit self-esteem. However, research on narcissism has predominantly focused on non-clinical participants and data derived from patients diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) remain scarce. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to test the mask model hypothesis of narcissism among patients with NPD. Male patients with NPD were compared to patients with other PD's and healthy participants on implicit and explicit self-esteem. NPD patients did not differ in levels of explicit and implicit self-esteem compared to both the psychiatric and the healthy control group. Overall, the current study found no evidence in support of the mask model of narcissism among a clinical group. This implicates that it might not be relevant for clinicians to focus treatment of NPD on an underlying negative self-esteem

    Differential distribution of inflammatory cells in large and small airways in smokers

    BACKGROUND: Smoking induces structural changes in the airways, and is considered a major factor in the development of airflow obstruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, differences in inflammatory cell distribution between large airways (LA) and small airways (SA) have not been systematically explored in smokers. Hypothesis: The content of cells infiltrating the airway wall differs between LA and SA. AIMS: To compare the content of neutrophils, macrophages, lymphocytes and mast cells infiltrating LA and SA in smokers who underwent surgery for lung cancer. METHODS: Lung tissue from 15 smokers was analysed. Inflammatory cells in the lamina propria were identified by immunohistochemical analysis, quantified by digital image analysis and expressed as number of cells per surface area. RESULTS: The number of neutrophils infiltrating the lamina propria of SA (median 225.3 cells/mm(2)) was higher than that in the lamina propria of LA (median 60.2 cells/mm(2); p <0.001). Similar results were observed for mast cells: 313.3 and 133.7 cells/mm(2) in the SA and LA, respectively (p <0.001). In contrast, the number of CD4 cells was higher in LA compared with SA (median 217.8 vs 80.5 cells/mm(2); p = 0.042). CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate a non-uniform distribution of neutrophils and mast cells throughout the bronchial tree, and suggest that these cells may be involved in the development of smoking-related peripheral lung injur

    Eotaxin-2 and eotaxin-3 expression is associated with persistent eosinophilic bronchial inflammation in patients with asthma after allergen challenge

    BACKGROUND: Eotaxin-1, eotaxin-2, and eotaxin-3 are chemokines involved in the activation and recruitment of eosinophils through activation of their main receptor, CC chemokine receptor 3. The differential roles of these chemokines still remain to be established. It has been suggested that eotaxin-1 is an important mediator in the early phase of allergen-induced recruitment of eosinophils into the airways. Eotaxin-2 and eotaxin-3 might play a role in the subsequent persistence of allergen-induced bronchial eosinophilia. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the expression of eotaxins and eosinophil counts in the bronchial mucosa of subjects with mild asthma after resolution of the late-phase asthmatic response (LAR). METHODS: The expression of eotaxins and eosinophil counts were determined in bronchial biopsy specimens obtained from 10 subjects with mild asthma 48 hours after diluent and allergen challenge by using immunohistochemistry. Positively stained cells were counted in a 125-mum-deep zone of the lamina propria. RESULTS: Eotaxin-2 and eotaxin-3 expression in bronchial mucosa was significantly increased 48 hours after allergen challenge ( P = .001 and P = .013, respectively). At this time point, when marked tissue eosinophilia was still present, these increases were positively correlated with the magnitude of the LAR ( r = 0.72, P = .019 and r = 0.64, P = .046, respectively). Furthermore, eotaxin-2 expression was associated with the number of eosinophils after allergen challenge ( r = 0.72, P = .018). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that eotaxin-2 and eotaxin-3 might account for the persistence of bronchial eosinophilia after resolution of the LA
