    Exploring the practical knowledge of eccentric resistance training in high-performance strength and conditioning practitioners

    Habitual use of eccentric exercise has been recognised to increase strength and power; however, the current body of knowledge has limited potential to understand the application of such resistance training in athletic populations. In order to develop appropriate applied research, that relates to elite athletic populations, it is vital to appreciate the practical knowledge of strength and conditioning practitioners operating in high-performance environments. This study summarised the questionnaire responses from 100 strength and conditioning practitioners operating in performance sport relating to questions such as the training effects to various eccentric resistance training regimes, the rationale for the use of these techniques and the knowledge supporting its application. The combination of closed and open-ended questions enabled a thematic analysis to be conducted. There was evidence that practitioners employed a variety of eccentric training methodologies; however, there was interest in gaining greater understanding of the training dose to bring about the optimal adaptive changes, and importantly how this might translate to sport-specific performance. In addition, practitioners would welcome recommendations associated with eccentric training, whilst concurrently minimising the issues of excessive fatigue, muscle damage and soreness. The training effects of interest included neural, architectural and morphological adaptations and, importantly, translation to performance of sports-specific skills. Collectively, these responses called for more practically relevant research to be conducted within the high-performance environment, alongside more opportunities for professional development through learning and knowledge-sharing opportunities. The outcomes summarised in this work should inform future applied research projects and educational content relating to eccentric training

    A general numerical analysis program for the superconducting quasiparticle mixer

    A user-oriented computer program SISCAP (SIS Computer Analysis Program) for analyzing SIS mixers is described. The program allows arbitrary impedance terminations to be specified at all LO harmonics and sideband frequencies. It is therefore able to treat a much more general class of SIS mixers than the widely used three-frequency analysis, for which the harmonics are assumed to be short-circuited. An additional program, GETCHI, provides the necessary input data to program SISCAP. The SISCAP program performs a nonlinear analysis to determine the SIS junction voltage waveform produced by the local oscillator. The quantum theory of mixing is used in its most general form, treating the large signal properties of the mixer in the time domain. A small signal linear analysis is then used to find the conversion loss and port impedances. The noise analysis includes thermal noise from the termination resistances and shot noise from the periodic LO current. Quantum noise is not considered.     Design and qualification of the SEU/TD Radiation Monitor chip

    This report describes the design, fabrication, and testing of the Single-Event Upset/Total Dose (SEU/TD) Radiation Monitor chip. The Radiation Monitor is scheduled to fly on the Mid-Course Space Experiment Satellite (MSX). The Radiation Monitor chip consists of a custom-designed 4-bit SRAM for heavy ion detection and three MOSFET's for monitoring total dose. In addition the Radiation Monitor chip was tested along with three diagnostic chips: the processor monitor and the reliability and fault chips. These chips revealed the quality of the CMOS fabrication process. The SEU/TD Radiation Monitor chip had an initial functional yield of 94.6 percent.     Community \u3ci\u3eAcequias\u3c/i\u3e in Colorado\u27s Rio Culebra Watershed: A Customary Commons in the Domain of Prior Appropriation

    This article presents an account of the landscape and water institutions of the acequia communities of Colorado\u27s Rio Culebra watershed. The physical and social landscape of the Culebra watershed, a product of water institutions introduced by Hispano settlers in the years immediately following the Mexican War, and the persistence of those institutions after the introduction of the system of prior appropriation, offers an instance of a successful engagement of community water institutions in the creation of a sustainable and resource-rich watershed landscape. The ultimate goals of this article are threefold. First, the article describes the acequialandscape and its social, cultural, and legal norms, to reveal the necessity of a multicultural perspective on water rights and water use in one community in the American West. Second, we explore the lessons that the history and waterways of Hispano irrigation communities offer to policymakers seeking to adapt water law and water institutions to support community well being and the flourishing of the natural environment. Third, this paper explores the ecological principles on display in the Culebra acequia communities, and the requirements for maintaining acequia institutional arrangements so as to promote the survival of a landscape that is collectively managed for optimum watershed functionality

    Customary Practice and Community Governance in Implementing the Human Right to Water--The Case of the \u3ci\u3eAcequia\u3c/i\u3e Communities of Colorado\u27s Rio Culebra Watershed

    This paper offers commentary on the appropriateness of viewing, as a human right, the authority to manage water and to participate meaningfully in watershed governance, and it takes as an example the community of Hispano farmers of the Rio Culebra watershed of Southern Colorado in the headwaters of the Upper Rio Grande. In earlier work, the authors have written about the uneasy relationship between the formal system of appropriative water rights under Colorado law and the enduring set of local water norms practiced within acequias—the traditional water governance institutions and irrigation systems of the Culebra\u27s Hispano farmers. The present narrative will frame that work as part of the inquiry of Willamette University College of Law\u27s Water Law Symposium into the nature of the human right to water in the American West. The history and present circumstances of the Culebra acequia farmers, as a case study, offer insight into the importance of recognizing group rights to exercise control over necessary water resources as a foundation for the protection of community rights to viable economic life, food security, and cultural survival. At issue in the acequia communities is the protection of communitarian power over water resources as a requirement for the survival of a very specific set of relations between people and the landscape in which they live. This paper will present a condensed account of the relevant history and present circumstances of the Culebra acequias necessary to understanding possible human rights arguments that support protection of acequia institutions and promote full engagement by acequia farmers in governance of the watersheds on which their irrigation communities depend. The paper will speak to the value of achieving true pluralism in water law and institutions to protect the social and natural resource capital of marginalized communities and to advance the human rights of economic and cultural life

    Circumnuclear Gas in Seyfert 1 Galaxies: Morphology, Kinematics, and Direct Measurement of Black Hole Masses

    (Abridged) The two-dimensional distribution and kinematics of the molecular, ionized, and highly ionized gas in the nuclear regions of Seyfert 1 galaxies have been measured using high spatial resolution (~0''.09) near-infrared spectroscopy from NIRSPEC with adaptive optics on the Keck telescope. Molecular hydrogen, H2, is detected in all nine Seyfert 1 galaxies and, in the majority of galaxies, has a spatially resolved flux distribution. In contrast, the narrow component of the BrG emission has a distribution consistent with that of the K-band continuum. In general, the kinematics of H2 are consistent with thin disk rotation, with a velocity gradient of over 100 km/s measured across the central 0''.5 in three galaxies, and across the central 1''.5 in two galaxies. The kinematics of BrG are in agreement with the H2 rotation, except in all four cases the central 0''.5 is either blue- or redshifted by more than 75 km/s. The highly ionized gas, measured with the [Ca VIII] and [Si VII] coronal lines, is spatially and kinematically consistent with BrG in the central 0''.5. Dynamical models have been fitted to the two-dimensional H2 kinematics, taking into account the stellar mass distribution, the emission line flux distribution, and the point spread function. For NGC 3227 the modeling indicates a black hole mass of Mbh = 2.0{+1.0/-0.4} x 10^7 Msun, and for NGC 4151 Mbh = 3.0{+0.75/-2.2} x 10^7 Msun. In NGC 7469 the best fit model gives Mbh < 5.0 x 10^7 Msun. In all three galaxies, modeling suggests a near face-on disk inclination angle, which is consistent with the unification theory of active galaxies. The direct black hole mass estimates verify that masses determined from the technique of reverberation mapping are accurate to within a factor of three with no additional systematic errors.Comment: 43 pages, including 47 figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ.     Improved Mean-Field Scheme for the Hubbard Model

    Ground state energies and on-site density-density correlations are calculated for the 1-D Hubbard model using a linear combination of the Hubbard projection operators. The mean-field coefficients in the resulting linearized Equations of Motion (EOM) depend on both one-particle static expectation values as well as static two-particle correlations. To test the model, the one particle expectation values are determined self-consistently while using Lanczos determined values for the two particle correlation terms. Ground state energies and on-site density-density correlations are then compared as a function of UU to the corresponding Lanczos values on a 12 site Hubbard chain for 1/2 and 5/12 fillings. To further demonstrate the validity of the technique, the static correlation functions are also calculated using a similar EOM approach, which ignores the effective vertex corrections for this problem, and compares those results as well for a 1/2 filled chain.
