    Design of floor structures for human induced vibrations

    In recent years, the introduction of new structural materials and innovative construction processes, associated to architectural and space arrangement requirements, in multi-storey buildings construction have produced significantly more flexible floor structural systems. The design of these floor systems is usually controlled by serviceability criteria, deflections or vibrations. Recognizing a gap in the design codes, this report gives a procedure for the determination and assessment of floor response for human induced vibrations. First, the proposed procedure is presented, giving particular attention to the human induced loading characterization, dynamic properties and the comfort criteria for the verification of floor structural systems. Design charts are derived. Finally, it is presented a guidance manual to use the simplified procedure proposed for the design of building floors for human induced vibrations. Two worked examples of the proposed design procedure are given, namely a filigree slab with ACB-composite beams and a composite slab with steel beams.JRC.DG.G.5-European laboratory for structural assessmen

    Electronic Transport in a Three-dimensional Network of 1-D Bismuth Quantum Wires

    The resistance R of a high density network of 6 nm diameter Bi wires in porous Vycor glass is studied in order to observe its expected semiconductor behavior. R increases from 300 K down to 0.3 K. Below 4 K, where R varies approximately as ln(1/T), the order-of-magnitude of the resistance rise, as well as the behavior of the magnetoresistance are consistent with localization and electron-electron interaction theories of a one-dimensional disordered conductor in the presence of strong spin-orbit scattering. We show that this behaviour and the surface-enhanced carrier density may mask the proposed semimetal-to-semiconductor transition for quantum Bi wires.Comment: 19 pages total, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Phys.     Using AI-Enhanced Social Robots to Improve Children’s Healthcare Experiences

    This paper describes a new research project that aims to develop an autonomous and responsive social robot designed to help children cope with painful procedures in hospital emergency departments. While this is an application domain where psychological interventions have been previously demonstrated to be effective at reducing pain and distress using a variety of devices and techniques, in recent years, social robots have been trialled in this area with promising initial results. However, until now, the social robots that have been tested have generally been teleoperated, which has limited their flexibility and robustness, as well as the potential to offer personalized, adaptive procedural support. Using co-design techniques, this project plans to define and validate the necessary robot behaviour together with participant groups that include children, parents and caregivers, and healthcare professionals. Identified behaviours will be deployed on a robot platform, incorporating AI reasoning techniques that will enable the robot to adapt autonomously to the child’s behaviour. The final robot system will be evaluated through a two-site clinical trial. Throughout the project, we will also monitor and analyse the ethical and social implications of robotics and AI in paediatric healthcare

    Photo- and Electroproduction of Eta Mesons

    Eta photo- and electroproduction off the nucleon is investigated in an effective lagrangian approach that contains Born terms and both vector meson and nucleon resonance contributions. In particular, we review and develop the formalism for coincidence experiments with polarization degrees of freedom. The different response functions appearing in single and double polarization experiments have been studied. We will present calculations for structure functions and kinematical conditions that are most sensitive to details of the lagrangian, in particular with regard to contributions of nucleon resonances beyond the dominant S11S_{11}(1535) resonance.Comment: 24 pages RevTeX/LaTeX2.09, NFSS1, 13 figures (in separate file (tar,gzip and uue)), accepted for publication in Z.     Identification of a tyrosine residue responsible for N-acetylimidazole-induced increase of activity of ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 3

    Chemical modification in combination with site-directed mutagenesis was used to identify a tyrosine residue responsible for the increase in ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 3 (NTPDase3) nucleotidase activity after acetylation with a tyrosine-selective reagent, N-acetylimidazole. The NTPDase3 ATPase activity is increased more than the ADPase activity by this reagent. Several fairly well conserved tyrosine residues (252, 255, and 262) that are located in or very near apyrase conserved region 4a (ACR4a) were mutated. These mutants were all active, but mutation of tyrosine 252 to either alanine or phenylalanine eliminated the activity increase observed after N-acetylimidazole treatment of the wild-type enzyme. This suggests that the acetylation of tyrosine 252 is responsible for the increased activity. Stabilization of quaternary structure has resulted in increased enzyme activities for the NTPDases. However, mutation of these three tyrosine residues did not result in global changes of tertiary or quaternary structure, as measured by Cibacron blue binding, chemical cross linking, and native gel electrophoretic analysis. Nevertheless, disruption of the oligomeric structure with the detergent Triton X-100 abolished the increase in activity induced by this reagent. In addition, mutations that abolished the N-acetylimidazole effect also attenuated the increases of enzyme activity observed after lectin and chemical cross-linking treatments, which were previously attributed to stabilization of the quaternary structure. Thus, we speculate that the acetylation of tyrosine 252 might induce a subtle conformational change in NTPDase3, resulting in the observed increase in activity

    Polarization transfer in the 16^{16}O(p,p′)(p,p') reaction at forward angles and structure of the spin-dipole resonances

    Cross sections and polarization transfer observables in the 16^{16}O(p,p′)(p,p') reactions at 392 MeV were measured at several angles between θlab=\theta_{lab}= 0∘^\circ and 14∘^\circ. The non-spin-flip (ΔS=0{\Delta}S=0) and spin-flip (ΔS=1{\Delta}S=1) strengths in transitions to several discrete states and broad resonances in 16^{16}O were extracted using a model-independent method. The giant resonances in the energy region of Ex=19−E_x=19-27 MeV were found to be predominantly excited by ΔL=1{\Delta}L=1 transitions. The strength distribution of spin-dipole transitions with ΔS=1{\Delta}S=1 and ΔL=1{\Delta}L=1 were deduced. The obtained distribution was compared with a recent shell model calculation. Experimental results are reasonably explained by distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations with the shell model wave functions.Comment: 28 pages RevTex, including 9 figures, to be published in Phys.     Sex-biased parental care and sexual size dimorphism in a provisioning arthropod

    The diverse selection pressures driving the evolution of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) have long been debated. While the balance between fecundity selection and sexual selection has received much attention, explanations based on sex-specific ecology have proven harder to test. In ectotherms, females are typically larger than males, and this is frequently thought to be because size constrains female fecundity more than it constrains male mating success. However, SSD could additionally reflect maternal care strategies. Under this hypothesis, females are relatively larger where reproduction requires greater maximum maternal effort – for example where mothers transport heavy provisions to nests. To test this hypothesis we focussed on digger wasps (Hymenoptera: Ammophilini), a relatively homogeneous group in which only females provision offspring. In some species, a single large prey item, up to 10 times the mother’s weight, must be carried to each burrow on foot; other species provide many small prey, each flown individually to the nest. We found more pronounced female-biased SSD in species where females carry single, heavy prey. More generally, SSD was negatively correlated with numbers of prey provided per offspring. Females provisioning multiple small items had longer wings and thoraxes, probably because smaller prey are carried in flight. Despite much theorising, few empirical studies have tested how sex-biased parental care can affect SSD. Our study reveals that such costs can be associated with the evolution of dimorphism, and this should be investigated in other clades where parental care costs differ between sexes and species

    Gap structure in the electron-doped Iron-Arsenide Superconductor Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2: low-temperature specific heat study

    We report the field and temperature dependence of the low-temperature specific heat down to 400 mK and in magnetic fields up to 9 T of the electron-doped Ba(Fe0.92Co0.08)2As2 superconductor. Using the phonon specific heat obtained from pure BaFe2As2 we find the normal state Sommerfeld coefficient to be 18 mJ/mol.K^2 and a condensation energy of 1.27 J/mol. The temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat clearly indicate the presence of the low-energy excitations in the system. The magnetic field variation of field-induced specific heat cannot be described by single clean s- or d-wave models. Rather, the data require an anisotropic gap scenario which may or may not have nodes. We discuss the implications of these results.Comment: New Journal of Physics in press, 10 pages, 5 figure
