    Entropy Limit and the Cold Feedback Mechanism in Cooling Flow Clusters

    I propose an explanation to the finding that star formation and visible filaments strong in Halpha emission in cooling flow clusters occur only if the minimum specific entropy and the radiative cooling time of the intracluster medium (ICM), are below a specific threshold. The explanation is based on the cold feedback mechanism. In this mechanism the mass accreted by the central black hole originates in non-linear over-dense blobs of gas residing in an extended region of the cooling flow region. I use the criterion that the feedback cycle period must be longer than the radiative cooling time of dense blobs for large quantities of gas to cool to low temperature. The falling time of the dense blobs is parameterized by the ratio of the infall velocity to the sound speed. Another parameter is the ratio of the blobs' density to that of the surrounding ICM. By taking the values of the parameters as in previous papers on the cold feedback model, I derive an expression that gives the right value of the entropy threshold. Future studies will have to examine in more detail the role of these parameters, and to show that the observed sharp change in the behavior of clusters across the entropy, or radiative cooling time, threshold can be reproduced by the model.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letter

    Contribution of higher nucleon resonances to K*{\Lambda} photoproduction

    We investigate K*{\Lambda}(1116) photoproduction off the proton and neutron targets in the effective Lagrangian method in the tree-level Born approximation. In addition to the K, K*, and {\kappa} exchanges which are the main contributions to the reaction, we consider the contributions from the higher nucleon resonances D13(2080) and the D15(2200). We find that the D13(2080) plays a crucial role in explaining the enhancement of the near-threshold production rate, which results in a good agreement with the experimental data for the proton targets, while the contribution of the D15(2200) is rather small. A similar conclusion is drawn for K* photoproduction off the neutron targets. In addition to the energy and angular dependence of the cross sections, we present the predictions on the photon-beam asymmetry.Comment: 12 pages, 19 figure

    Constituent quark models and pentaquark baryons

    We discuss certain general features of the pentaquark picture for the theta, its 10bar_F partner, Xi_{3/2}, and possible heavy quark analogues. Models employing spin-dependent interactions based on either effective Goldstone boson exchange or effective color magnetic exchange are also used to shed light on possible corrections to the Jaffe-Wilczek and Karliner-Lipkin scenarios. Some model-dependent features of the pentaquark picture (splitting patterns and relative decay couplings) are also discussed in the context of these models.Comment: 4 pages.     Parental bereavement and the loss of purpose in life as a function of interdependent self-construal

    Children are often inextricably linked to their parents’ hopes and dreams. As such, the loss of a child often represents one of the most traumatic experiences possible. The current research explores how this specific loss relates to one’s sense of purpose in life. We further explore whether the loss of a child is particularly detrimental to one’s sense of purpose for highly interdependent parents. Analyses of parents from the Midlife in the United States data set revealed, as expected, that the loss of child negatively predicts one’s sense of purpose in life, and that this effect is most pronounced for parents high in interdependent self-construal.     Chandra Observations of the Cl1604 Supercluster at z=0.9: Evidence for an Overdensity of Active Galactic Nuclei

    We present the results of Chandra observations of the Cl1604 supercluster at z~0.9. The system is the largest structure mapped at redshifts approaching unity, containing at least eight spectroscopically confirmed galaxy clusters and groups. Using two 50-ksec ACIS-I pointings we examine both the X-ray point source population and the diffuse emission from individual clusters in the system. We find a 2.5\sigma excess of point sources detected in the hard band (2-10 keV) relative to the number of sources found in blank fields observed by Chandra. No such excess is observed in the soft band (0.5-2 keV). The hard-band source density is 1.47 times greater than that of a blank field, in agreement with the previously reported correlation between overdensity amplitude and cluster redshift. Using a maximum likelihood technique we have matched 112 of the 161 detected X-ray point sources to optical counterparts and found 15 sources that are associated with the supercluster. All 15 sources have rest-frame luminosities consistent with emission from active galactic nuclei (AGN). We find that the supercluster AGN largely avoid the densest regions of the system and are instead distributed on the outskirts of massive clusters or within poorer clusters and groups. We have also detected diffuse emission from two of the eight clusters and groups in the system, clusters Cl1604+4304 and Cl1604+4314. The systems have bolometric luminosities of 1.43x10^44 and 8.20x10^43 h70^-2 erg s^-1 and gas temperatures of 3.50 (+1.82-1.08) and 1.64 (+0.65-0.45) keV, respectively. Using updated velocity dispersions, we compare the properties of these systems to the cluster scaling relations followed by other X-ray and optically selected galaxy clusters at high redshift.Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Ap

    Upper limit on spontaneous supercurrents in Sr2_2RuO4_4

    It is widely believed that the perovskite Sr2_2RuO4_4 is an unconventional superconductor with broken time reversal symmetry. It has been predicted that superconductors with broken time reversal symmetry should have spontaneously generated supercurrents at edges and domain walls. We have done careful imaging of the magnetic fields above Sr2_2RuO4_4 single crystals using scanning Hall bar and SQUID microscopies, and see no evidence for such spontaneously generated supercurrents. We use the results from our magnetic imaging to place upper limits on the spontaneously generated supercurrents at edges and domain walls as a function of domain size. For a single domain, this upper limit is below the predicted signal by two orders of magnitude. We speculate on the causes and implications of the lack of large spontaneous supercurrents in this very interesting superconducting system.Comment: 9 page

    Suppression of Theta^+(J^P=3/2^(+,-)) photoproduction from the proton

    We investigate the photoproduction of Theta^+ from the proton and neutron, gamma N -> Kbar Theta^+. Assuming that spin and parity of Theta^+ are J^P = 3/2^(+,-), it is shown that the production from the proton is strongly suppressed as compared with that from the neutron. This could provide a possible explanation for the null results of the recent CLAS experiment in finding Theta^+ via the reaction gamma p -> Kbar^0 Theta^+.Comment: 4 pages, 11 figure
