Molecular hydrogen beyond the optical edge of an isolated spiral galaxy
We know little about the outermost portions of galaxies because there is
little light coming from them. We do know that in many cases atomic hydrogen
(HI) extends well beyond the optical radius \cite{Casertano91}. In the centers
of galaxies, however, molecular hydrogen (H2) usually dominates by a large
factor, raising the question of whether H2 is abundant also in the outer
regions but hitherto unseen. Here we report the detection of emission from
carbon monoxide (CO), the most abundant tracer of H2, beyond the optical radius
of the nearby galaxy NGC 4414. The molecular clouds probably formed in the
regions of relatively high HI column density and in the absence of spiral
density waves. The relative strength of the lines from the two lowest
rotational levels indicates that both the temperature and density of the H2 are
quite low compared to conditions closer to the center. The inferred surface
density of the molecular material continues the monotonic decrease from the
inner regions. We conclude that while molecular clouds can form in the outer
region of this galaxy, there is little mass associated with them.Comment: 3 Nature page
Correction of Population Stratification in Large Multi-Ethnic Association Studies
The vast majority of genetic risk factors for complex diseases have, taken
individually, a small effect on the end phenotype. Population-based
association studies therefore need very large sample sizes to detect
significant differences between affected and non-affected individuals.
Including thousands of affected individuals in a study requires recruitment
in numerous centers, possibly from different geographic regions.
Unfortunately such a recruitment strategy is likely to complicate the study
design and to generate concerns regarding population stratification. We analyzed 9,751 individuals representing three main ethnic groups -
Europeans, Arabs and South Asians - that had been enrolled from 154 centers
involving 52 countries for a global case/control study of acute myocardial
infarction. All individuals were genotyped at 103 candidate genes using
1,536 SNPs selected with a tagging strategy that captures most of the
genetic diversity in different populations. We show that relying solely on
self-reported ethnicity is not sufficient to exclude population
stratification and we present additional methods to identify and correct for
stratification. Our results highlight the importance of carefully addressing population
stratification and of carefully “cleaning” the sample
prior to analyses to obtain stronger signals of association and to avoid
spurious results
A new species of cosmocercoides (Nematoda; cosmocercidae) and other helminths in leptodactylus latrans (anura; leptodactylidae) from Argentina
Cosmocercoides latrans n. sp. (Cosmocercidae) from the small intestine of Leptodactylus latrans (Anura: Leptodactylidae) from Northeastern Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina is described. The new species can be distinguished from their congeners by a combination of the characters, among which stands out the number of rosette papillae, the lack of gubernaculum and the presence of lateral alae in both sexes. There are over 20 species in the genus Cosmocercoides, and Cosmocercoides latrans n. sp. represents the third species from the Neotropical realm and the second for Argentina. Additionally, seven previously known taxa are reported; Pseudoacanthocephalus cf. lutzi, Catadiscus uruguayensis, Rauschiella palmipedis, Aplectana hylambatis, Cosmocerca parva, Schrankiana sp. and Rhabdias elegans; providing literature records and information on distribution and host-parasite relationships.Fil: Draghi, Regina. Association of Polyaminergic Loci With Anxiety, Mood Disorders, and Attempted Suicide
The polyamine system has been implicated in a number of psychiatric conditions, which display both alterations in polyamine levels and altered expression of genes related to polyamine metabolism. Studies have identified associations between genetic variants in spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase (SAT1) and both anxiety and suicide, and several polymorphisms appear to play important roles in determining gene expression. We genotyped 63 polymorphisms, spread across four polyaminergic genes (SAT1, spermine synthase (SMS), spermine oxidase (SMOX), and ornithine aminotransferase like-1 (OATL1)), in 1255 French-Canadian individuals who have been followed longitudinally for 22 years. We assessed univariate associations with anxiety, mood disorders, and attempted suicide, as assessed during early adulthood. We also investigated the involvement of gene-environment interactions in terms of childhood abuse, and assessed internalizing and externalizing symptoms as endophenotypes mediating these interactions. Overall, each gene was associated with at least one main outcome: anxiety (SAT1, SMS), mood disorders (SAT1, SMOX), and suicide attempts (SAT1, OATL1). Several SAT1 polymorphisms displayed disease-specific risk alleles, and polymorphisms in this gene were involved in gene-gene interactions with SMS to confer risk for anxiety disorders, as well as gene-environment interactions between childhood physical abuse and mood disorders. Externalizing behaviors demonstrated significant mediation with regards to the association between OATL1 and attempted suicide, however there was no evidence that externalizing or internalizing behaviors were appropriate endophenotypes to explain the associations with mood or anxiety disorders. Finally, childhood sexual abuse did not demonstrate mediating influences on any of our outcomes. These results demonstrate that genetic variants in polyaminergic genes are associated with psychiatric conditions, each of which involves a set of separate and distinct risk alleles. As several of these polymorphisms are associated with gene expression, these findings may provide mechanisms to explain the alterations in polyamine metabolism which have been observed in psychiatric disorders
