Eugene O’Neill and His Ghosts of the Past, Present and Future

“The past is the present, isn’t it? It is the future too. We all try to lie out of that but life won’t let us” (1989:75) remarks Mary Tyrone, the heroine of Long Day’s Journey Into Night. In the play, considered to be O’Neill’s opus magnum, the writer directly confronts the ghosts that have kept the cycle of his family trauma intact for generations. Tyrones’ / O’Neills’ family home continuously haunts its inhabitants, which results in their increasing alienation and inability to emotionally grow or connect. O’Neill translates this deeply personal process of breaking illusions, healing and forgiving against all odds into a cruelly authentic, literary portrayal of the human condition. In this article, I will argue that personal struggle is a signifcant notion not only in O’Neill’s drama but also generally in contemporary literature. The notion of trauma has been extensively interpreted by scholars in the social, anthropological and historical context. I will investigate, with O’Neill’s life and work as primary references, the personal / universal aspect of trauma, my primary research question being: to what extent can the ghosts of trauma be restrained by means of literature

Don DeLillo and the Ghost of Language

It is diffcult to provide an insightful overview of Don DeLillo’s fction without commenting upon the signifcance that language plays in his novels—not as a craft, but as an object of an in-depth, ongoing study. To DeLillo, language seems to inhabit a paradoxical, liminal space between material existence and inexistence. On the one hand, the author is famous for his masterful control over his words, on the other, he recognizes a mysterious force with which the words affect literature independently of its creator in a possession-like manner. In my article, I discuss DeLillo’s reflections on language by analyzing The Body Artist, his shortest and arguably most unusual novel, on the surface a strange kind of a ghost story, but beyond that, a profound reflection on language, trauma and contemporary art. I focus on the novel’s semi-aphasic character, Mr. Tuttle, to explore the spectral quality in DeLillo’s language, connecting it to Jacques Derrida’s influential theoretical reflection on the matter

Prevalence of the French language in Algerian online news : a remnant of the colonial past.

A French colony for over a century, Algeria gained independence in 1962, yet its identity remains chained to its traumatic history. During the colonial period, French officials enacted laws to subvert the native population and its culture by discouraging the teaching of Arabic and, in its place, emphasizing French language and culture. Seeking to reclaim their national identity, leaders in post-independent Algeria created Arabization policies, which favored the use of Arabic and discouraged the use of French. Algerian society has therefore long been the target of linguistic control. As a result, language preferences of Algerians can be linked to the relative success and failure of subsequent governments to propagate either French or Arabic. This paper sets out to explore the co-existence of French and Arabic in modern Algerian society through the lens of online news media. First, it examines Algerian history in terms of language, culture, and education to provide context for the subsequent research findings. Second, it presents quantified information on the popularity and prevalence of 58 websites categorized by principal language of publication. General-interest, sports, and business Algerian news sites are analyzed separately to lead to a more nuanced understanding of language preference in different contexts. The conclusions obtained from these research findings indicate both the long-term effects produced by forced imposition of a language and the resilience of language and culture in the face of steady suppression

The system approach to the analysis of the phenomena in nature and society have developed intensively for many decades. Usually in the theory of stability the difficult multidimensional system is understand as the system approach, and the scientific information can be integrated without distortion in relatively simple model that showing (sometimes using mathematical tools) origin and development of separate processes. We will select three main methods in constructing of models of steady development: resource, biosphere and integrative. All of them are based on single philosophical and natural-science foundation. A "hidden" characterization of polyhedral convex sets

We prove that a closed convex subset CC of a complete linear metric space XX is polyhedral in its closed linear hull if and only if no infinite subset AX\CA\subset X\backslash C can be hidden behind CC in the sense [x,y]C[x,y]\cap C\not = \emptyset for any distinct points x,yAx,y\in A.Comment: 9 page
