Diabetes Self-Management Education: A Rural Health Development

    Get PDF
The purpose of this Scholarly Project was to explore the need for a Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) Program in a rural health community in Southeast, Kansas (SEK). Statistics in Crawford County reveal that 10% of the population has been diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and a rising number of patients that are classified as obese. Without serious interventions many of these patients will develop T2DM. DSME programs provide essential skills and resources for patients to maintain glycemic control and reduce risks associated with this life-long disease. This study utilized data from fifty T2DM patients in the SEK area. Four crucial determinants of the individual T2DM patient’s health were explored: blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and hemoglobin A1C%. The significance of this data was to determine the glycemic control and overall health of the T2DM population in the demographic area. Data was collected and the mean was analyzed for each determinant of health. Data concluded the sample was at a desired level for blood pressure and above the desired level for BMI, LDL cholesterol, and hemoglobin A1C%. The results of this study validated the need for a DSME program that could be utilized by the SEK community. A DSME program in the southeast Kansas area would provide patients with the necessary resources to self-manage their lifelong disease

A Pre and Post Survey to Evaluate Patient Perception of Group Diabetes Self-Management Education in Rural Health Clinics

Diabetes is a significant clinical issue in the primary care setting. Providers struggle to overcome barriers to facilitate therapeutic interventions for populations served. The specific aim of this study was to assess group diabetes self-management education from a patient perspective. Evaluation of diabetes knowledge and self-efficacy confidence was conducted in rural primary care clinics using pre and post surveys. This study utilized a one-group pretest-posttest design to patients receiving group diabetes self-management education in Southeast Kansas rural primary care clinics by a certified diabetes educator. The surveyed population included individuals ages 18-65 with prediabetes, type I, or type II diabetes who received education led by a certified diabetic educator between December 1, 2018, and February 28, 2019, at five rural primary care clinics in Southeast Kansas

Enterprising Women and Village Banking in Urban Paraguay: Current impacts and future implications for social change

This thesis examines Fundación Paraguaya's Comité de Mujeres Emprendedoras (village banking) program and analyzes its potential as a tool for poverty alleviation, female empowerment and social change in Paraguay. The data for this thesis was collected over a three month period in 2007, and is based on interviews and file data from clients of the CME program. The research focuses on clients' work histories, their roles as micro-entrepreneurs and caregivers, and their experiences within the CME program. This thesis argues that in order to comprehend the significance of village banking in Paraguay, one must take into consideration the importance of self-employment for women who balance family and work, as well as the impact of capital and non-financial services. Although the CME program appears to be contributing to poverty alleviation and empowerment in Paraguay, this thesis contends that by adopting a more gender-oriented approach, and incorporating aspects of the "feminist empowerment paradigm," Fundación Paraguaya could create a more complete development tool, thereby increasing the potential benefits to women and promoting greater social change

Autism Screening Knowledge and Practice in Southeast Kansas

    Get PDF
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by delays in social communication and interaction as well as restricted repetitive behaviors, interest, and activities. According to the most recent reports from the CDC, it is estimated that 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with some form of ASD in the United States. Research has shown that early identification and intervention can significantly improve outcomes in those individuals diagnosed. As a result of this research, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recommended routine screening on all children for ASD at the age of 18 months and again at 24 months using a standardized autism-specific tool. This descriptive research design examines the autism screening and referral practices of providers in the southeast Kansas counties of Montgomery, Allen, Labette, Cherokee and Crawford. A survey was used to collect data regarding current autism screening and referral practices, knowledge on autism screening guidelines and provider attitudes on routine autism screening. The preliminary results show that providers in southeast Kansas are aware of the AAP guidelines regarding screening and feel that screening every child for autism is important. However, these providers are not screening children for autism using an autism specific screening tool. Providers in this area had a strong desire to learn more about autism screening guidelines and specific autism screening tools. A conclusion can be drawn that providers in this area understand the importance of routine autism screening but more education targeting how to perform the screening is warranted

Effect of base–acid properties of the mixtures of water with methanol on the solution enthalpy of selected cyclic ethers in this mixture at 298.15 K

The enthalpies of solution of cyclic ethers: 1,4- dioxane, 12-crown-4 and 18-crown-6 in the mixture of water and methanol have been measured within the whole mole fraction range at T = 298.15 K. Based on the obtained data, the effect of base–acid properties of water– methanol mixtures on the solution enthalpy of cyclic ethers in these mixtures has been analyzed. The solution enthalpy of cyclic ethers depends on acid properties of water– methanol mixtures in the range of high and medium water contents in the mixture. Based on the analysis performed, it can be assumed that in the mixtures of high methanol contents, cyclic ethe

Political Commitment: A Sartrean Civic Virtue

193 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2003.While the first half of this work articulates and defends the claim that Sartrean political commitment is a cogent notion of political responsibility, the later half argues for the feasibility and desirability of promoting commitment. Empirical and analytical considerations alike indicate that decentralized civil, social and political groups are excellent sources of commitment. Thus, the social implications of Sartrean political commitment harmonize with the tradition of American civic republicanism, which holds that civic virtue is the foundation of a well-ordered, democratic society. Political commitment is not out of place in Anglo-American thinking; in fact, the Sartrean virtue should be seen as an important contribution to the ethical vocabulary of American democracy.U of I OnlyRestricted to the U of I community idenfinitely during batch ingest of legacy ETD
