A Census of the Carina Nebula -- II. Energy Budget and Global Properties of the Nebulosity
The first paper in this series took a direct census of energy input from the
known OB stars in the Carina Nebula, and in this paper we study the global
properties of the surrounding nebulosity. We find that the total IR luminosity
of Carina is about 1.2E7 Lsun, accounting for only about 50-60% of the known
stellar luminosity from Paper I. Similarly, the ionizing photon luminosity --
(abridged; many important details omitted). Synchronized star formation around
the periphery of Carina provides a strong case that star formation here was
indeed triggered by stellar winds and UV radiation. This second generation
appears to involve a cascade toward preferentially intermediate- and low-mass
stars, but this may soon change when eta Car and its siblings explode. If the
current reservoir of atomic and molecular gas can be tapped at that time,
massive star formation may be rejuvinated around the periphery of Carina much
as if it were a young version of Gould's Belt. Also, when these multiple SNe
occur, the triggered second generation will be pelted repeatedly with SN ejecta
bearing short-lived radioactive nuclides. Carina may therefore represent the

Proper Motions of PSRs B1757-24 and B1951+32: Implications for Ages and Associations
Over the last decade, considerable effort has been made to measure the proper
motions of the pulsars B1757-24 and B1951+32 in order to establish or refute
associations with nearby supernova remnants and to understand better the
complicated geometries of their surrounding nebulae. We present proper motion
measurements of both pulsars with the Very Large Array, increasing the time
baselines of the measurements from 3.9 yr to 6.5 yr and from 12.0 yr to 14.5
yr, respectively, compared to previous observations. We confirm the
non-detection of proper motion of PSR B1757-24, and our measurement of (mu_a,
mu_d) = (-11 +/- 9, -1 +/- 15) mas yr^{-1} confirms that the association of PSR
B1757-24 with SNR G5.4-1.2 is unlikely for the pulsar characteristic age of
15.5 kyr, although an association can not be excluded for a significantly
larger age. For PSR B1951+32, we measure a proper motion of (mu_a, mu_d) =
(-28.8 +/- 0.9, -14.7 +/- 0.9) mas yr^{-1}, reducing the uncertainty in the
proper motion by a factor of two compared to previous results. After correcting
to the local standard of rest, the proper motion indicates a kinetic age of ~51
kyr for the pulsar, assuming it was born near the geometric center of the
supernova remnant. The radio-bright arc of emission along the pulsar proper
motion vector shows time-variable structure, but moves with the pulsar at an
approximately constant separation ~2.5", lending weight to its interpretation

Interaction of Supernova Ejecta with Nearby Protoplanetary Disks
The early Solar System contained short-lived radionuclides such as 60Fe (t1/2
= 1.5 Myr) whose most likely source was a nearby supernova. Previous models of
Solar System formation considered a supernova shock that triggered the collapse
of the Sun's nascent molecular cloud. We advocate an alternative hypothesis,
that the Solar System's protoplanetary disk had already formed when a very
close (< 1 pc) supernova injected radioactive material directly into the disk.
We conduct the first numerical simulations designed to answer two questions
related to this hypothesis: will the disk be destroyed by such a close
supernova; and will any of the ejecta be mixed into the disk? Our simulations
demonstrate that the disk does not absorb enough momentum from the shock to
escape the protostar to which it is bound. Only low amounts (< 1%) of mass loss
occur, due to stripping by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities across the top of the
disk, which also mix into the disk about 1% of the intercepted ejecta. These
low efficiencies of destruction and injectation are due to the fact that the
high disk pressures prevent the ejecta from penetrating far into the disk
before stalling. Injection of gas-phase ejecta is too inefficient to be
consistent with the abundances of radionuclides inferred from meteorites. On
the other hand, the radionuclides found in meteorites would have condensed into
dust grains in the supernova ejecta, and we argue that such grains will be
injected directly into the disk with nearly 100% efficiency. The meteoritic
abundances of the short-lived radionuclides such as 60Fe therefore are
consistent with injection of grains condensed from the ejecta of a nearby (< 1
pc) supernova, into an already-formed protoplanetary disk.Comment: 57 pages, 16 figure
The effect of the holiday season on body weight and composition in college students
BACKGROUND: With the rapid increase in obesity rates, determining critical periods for weight gain and the effects of changes in fat mass is imperative. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in body weight and composition over the holiday season (Thanksgiving through New Year's) in male and female college students. METHODS: Subjects completed three visits: the first occurred within 2 weeks prior to Thanksgiving, the second occurred within 5 to 7 days following Thanksgiving, and the third occurred within 10 days following New Year's Day. A total of 82 healthy male and female college age subjects participated. Body composition by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was assessed at visits 1 and 3 while body weight was assessed at all three visits. RESULTS: Average body weight remained relatively unchanged from pre-Thanksgiving to post-New Year's (71.3 ± 14 kg vs. 71.2 ± 15 kg; P = 0.71) and, in fact, a subset of normal weight subjects lost a significant amount of body weight. However, percent body fat (25.9 ± 9 %fat vs. 27.0 ± 9 %fat; P < 0.01) and fat mass (18.3 ± 8 kg and 19.1 ± 8 kg; P < 0.01) significantly increased from pre-Thanksgiving to post-New Year's while fat-free mass (48.7 ± 12 kg and 48.3 ± 11 kg; P = 0.08) was not significantly different than the post-New Year's. A significant positive relationship (P < 0.001) between the change in BMI and percent fat, total fat mass, total fat free mass, and trunk fat mass for the pre-Thanksgiving and post-New Year's visits were found. The same significant positive relationships (P < 0.001) were also observed between the change in body weight and percent fat, total fat mass, total fat free mass, and trunk fat mass. CONCLUSION: Despite the fact that body weight remained unchanged over the course of the holiday season, a significant increase in %body fat and fat mass was observed. With recent evidence showing marked morbidity and mortality to be associated with increased body fat (particularly abdominal adiposity), results from this study suggest body weight alone may underestimate the potentially deleterious effects of the holiday season
Anthocyanins inhibit tumor necrosis alpha-induced loss of Caco-2 cell barrier integrity
An increased permeability of the intestinal barrier is proposed as a major event in the pathophysiology of conditions characterized by chronic gut inflammation. This study investigated the capacity of pure anthocyanins (AC), and berry and rice extracts containing different types and amounts of AC, to inhibit tumor necrosis alpha (TNFα)-induced permeabilization of Caco-2 cell monolayers. Caco-2 cells differentiated into intestinal epithelial cell monolayers were incubated in the absence/presence of TNFα, with or without the addition of AC or AC-rich plant extracts (ACRE). AC and ACRE inhibited TNFα-induced loss of monolayer permeability as assessed by changes in transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and paracellular transport of FITC-dextran. In the range of concentrations tested (0.25–1 μM), O-glucosides of cyanidin, and delphinidin, but not those of malvidin, peonidin and petunidin protected the monolayer from TNFα-induced decrease of TEER and increase of FITC-dextran permeability. Cyanidin and delphinidin acted by mitigating TNFα-triggered activation of transcription factor NF-κB, and downstream phosphorylation of myosin light chain (MLC). The protective actions of the ACRE on TNFα-induced TEER increase was positively correlated with the sum of cyanidins and delphinidins (r2 = 0.83) content in the ACRE. However, no correlation was observed between TEER and ACRE total AC, malvidin, or peonidin content. Results support a particular capacity of cyanidins and delphinidins in the protection of the intestinal barrier against inflammation-induced permeabilization, in part through the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway.Fil: Cremonini, Eleonora. Anthocyanins protect the gastrointestinal tract from high fat diet-induced alterations in redox signaling, barrier integrity and dysbiosis.
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract can play a critical role in the development of pathologies associated with overeating, overweight and obesity. We previously observed that supplementation with anthocyanins (AC) (particularly glycosides of cyanidin and delphinidin) mitigated high fat diet (HFD)-induced development of obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance and steatosis in C57BL/6J mice. This paper investigated whether these beneficial effects could be related to AC capacity to sustain intestinal monolayer integrity, prevent endotoxemia, and HFD-associated dysbiosis. The involvement of redox-related mechanisms were further investigated in Caco-2 cell monolayers. Consumption of a HFD for 14 weeks caused intestinal permeabilization and endotoxemia, which were associated with a decreased ileum expression of tight junction (TJ) proteins (occludin, ZO-1 and claudin-1), increased expression of NADPH oxidase (NOX1 and NOX4) and NOS2 and oxidative stress, and activation of redox sensitive signals (NF-κB and ERK1/2) that regulate TJ dynamics. AC supplementation mitigated all these events and increased GLP-2 levels, the intestinal hormone that upregulates TJ protein expression. AC also prevented, in vitro, tumor necrosis factor alpha-induced Caco-2 monolayer permeabilization, NOX1/4 upregulation, oxidative stress, and NF-κB and ERK activation. HFD-induced obesity in mice caused dysbiosis and affected the levels and secretion of MUC2, a mucin that participates in intestinal cell barrier protection and immune response. AC supplementation restored microbiota composition and MUC2 levels and distribution in HFD-fed mice. Thus, AC, particularly delphinidin and cyanidin, can preserve GI physiology in HFD-induced obesity in part through redox-regulated mechanisms. This can in part explain AC capacity to mitigate pathologies, i.e. insulin resistance and steatosis, associated with HFD-associated obesity
Multidimensional relativistic MHD simulations of Pulsar Wind Nebulae: dynamics and emission
Pulsar Wind Nebulae, and the Crab nebula in particular, are the best cosmic
laboratories to investigate the dynamics of magnetized relativistic outflows
and particle acceleration up to PeV energies. Multidimensional MHD modeling by
means of numerical simulations has been very successful at reproducing, to the
very finest details, the innermost structure of these synchrotron emitting
nebulae, as observed in the X-rays. Therefore, the comparison between the
simulated source and observations can be used as a powerful diagnostic tool to
probe the physical conditions in pulsar winds, like their composition,
magnetization, and degree of anisotropy. However, in spite of the wealth of
observations and of the accuracy of current MHD models, the precise mechanisms
for magnetic field dissipation and for the acceleration of the non-thermal
emitting particles are mysteries still puzzling theorists to date. Here we
review the methodologies of the computational approach to the modeling of
Pulsar Wind Nebulae, discussing the most relevant results and the recent

Representative bureaucracy: does female police leadership affect gender-based violence arrests?
Representative bureaucracy theory postulates that passive representation leads to active representation of minority groups. This article investigates the passive representation of female police officers at leadership levels and the active representation of women vis-a-vis gender-based violence arrest rates in the UK. Much of the extant research on representative bureaucracy is located at street level, with evidence showing that discretionary power of minority bureaucrats can lead to active representation. This article is focused on leadership levels of a public bureaucracy. The empirical research is based upon a panel dataset of female police officers as an independent variable and gender-based violence arrest rates as a dependent variable. The analysis reveals that there is little evidence of active representation of women by female police leadership
