Appraisal of data available on violence against children in and around schools (VACS)

While violence against children (VAC) has been a long-established global concern, more recently attention has been drawn to how violence occurs in and around schools (VACS) and the role of education in preventing and responding to violence. Whilst awareness about VACS is growing, more robust data are needed to inform policy and practice. Concerns about ethical and methodological challenges may be hampering the inclusion of questions relating to violence in surveys and Education Management Information Systems (EMIS), and in data-informed programming. This resource aims to help Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) country advisers, their teams and partners to make use of existing data and plan for further data if needed to support programming. It will also be of interest to others working to improve data monitoring and use on VACS. This appraisal was prepared with funding support from UKAID. The appraisal identifies that, although there is no single survey that collects all data needed on VACS in all LMICs, a large amount of relevant data is collected regularly from a range of school-based and population-based surveys. Basic data are available in survey reports online and there is potential for additional analysis to be undertaken to further understand patterns of violence in and around school. The report concludes with recommendations for FCDO global and country-level wor

Historically Crimea was the land of culture of various tribes. And it had its influence on the Art style. The study of Crimea-Tatar Ornament dates to the 1880th. Its elements creates the system of symbols which gives the possibility to see the genetic ties of Crimea-Tatars with others ethnos. The author analyzed types of ornaments and their symbolic meanings

ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF WEATHER PROTECTION FOR LARGE ROUND BALES

. 1986. Economic benefits of weather protection for large round bales. Can. An economic evaluation ofthe storage losses ofvarious haying systems isreported. This information was necessary to augment a study of the effect of storage characteristicson round bale quality in which round bales from two different round baler types (fixed and variable bale chamber) were stored in five different manners. In addition, the costs of harvesting and storing hay by several methods were evaluated. These costs were translated into costs per "useable" tonneof hay. Values of spoiledhay were compared with the values of weather protection for round bales. The values ofhay spoilage indifferent types of storage were combined with detailed costs of growing, harvesting and storing hay and compared. Economic comparison with traditional rectangular bale harvesting methods is also included. It was found that round bale harvesting was the least expensive method at all volumes. Round bale harvesting with inside storage or plastic wrap protection provided a higher value than outside storage of round bales because of the increased spoilage when not protected. The cost of inside storage was equal to 14% spoilage of round bales

Positive energy unitary irreducible representations of D=6 conformal supersymmetry

We give a constructive classification of the positive energy (lowest weight) unitary irreducible representations of the D=6 superconformal algebras osp(8*/2N). Our results confirm all but one of the conjectures of Minwalla (for N=1,2) on this classification. Our main tool is the explicit construction of the norms of the states that has to be checked for positivity. We give also the reduction of the exceptional UIRs.Comment: 27 pages, TeX with harvmac, amssym.def, amssym.tex; v.2: minor corrections and references added; v.3: minor corrections; v.4: to appear in J. Evaluating the Potential of Using 5-Azacytidine as an Epimutagen

A number of early flowering lines were induced when 5-azacytidine was applied to germinating flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) seed. The genetics of these lines indicate that the induced changes are epigenetic and probably result from demethylation of the genomic DNA at loci that affect flowering age. Although the growth and development of three stable early flowering lines are altered and the percentage of filled seed was reduced in all three lines compared with controls, measures of seed productivity demonstrated that harvest index was unaffected in two of the lines. In the third, harvest index was lower than normal and both seed set per capsule and seed mass per 100 seed were reduced. Furthermore, six generations after induction this line began to display relatively high levels of polyembryony. The late appearance of this twinning and other aspects related to working with lines induced by 5-azacytidine and using 5-azacytidine as an epimutagen are discussed

Guernsey voluntary and charitable sector research study

The study‘s focus was on social inclusion, and how voluntary and charitable organisations try to overcome the barriers and inequalities which prevent people participating on equal terms in society. Its aim was to identify gaps in provision and ways to fill them. Its methodology included a literature review, focus groups and a questionnaire. The report reviews literature and research, from the UK and Europe as well as Guernsey, on social exclusion, social inclusion, the voluntary sector and its changing relationship with the statutory sector. Some of the themes of this broader review are reflected in the findings of the study of the VCS in Guernsey. Most households in Guernsey are not at risk of becoming poor in the near future, but the 2007 Household Expenditure Survey indicated that 16.6% of respondents lived in households with an income below 60% of median income. Those most affected by poverty are lone parent households, single pensioner households and households with children. This means poorer diet, worse health and housing, greater vulnerability to crime and less social support

Gauge-invariant correlation functions in light-cone superspace

We initiate a study of correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory using the light-cone superspace formalism. Our primary aim is to develop efficient methods to compute perturbative corrections to correlation functions. This analysis also allows us to examine potential subtleties which may arise when calculating off-shell quantities in light-cone gauge. We comment on the intriguing possibility that the manifest N=4 supersymmetry in this approach may allow for a compact description of entire multiplets and their correlation functions.Comment: 35 pages, several figure
