Linear resolutions of powers and products
The goal of this paper is to present examples of families of homogeneous
ideals in the polynomial ring over a field that satisfy the following
condition: every product of ideals of the family has a linear free resolution.
As we will see, this condition is strongly correlated to good primary
decompositions of the products and good homological and arithmetical properties
of the associated multi-Rees algebras. The following families will be discussed
in detail: polymatroidal ideals, ideals generated by linear forms and Borel
fixed ideals of maximal minors. The main tools are Gr\"obner bases and Sagbi
deformation

Non-local two-photon correlations using interferometers physically separated by 35 meters
An experimental demonstration of quantum correlations is presented. Energy
and time entangled photons at wavelengths of 704 and 1310 nm are produced by
parametric downconversion in KNbO3 and are sent through optical fibers into a
bulk-optical (704 nm) and an all-fiber Michelson-interferometer (1310 nm),
respectively. The two interferometers are located 35 meters aside from one
another. Using Faraday-mirrors in the fiber-interferometer, all birefringence
effects in the fibers are automatically compensated. We obtained two-photon
fringe visibilities of up to 95 % from which one can project a violation of
Bell's inequality by 8 standard deviations. The good performance and the
auto-aligning feature of Faraday-mirror interferometers show their potential
for a future test of Bell's inequalities in order to examine
quantum-correlations over long distances.Comment: 9 pages including 3 postscript figures, to be published in Europhys.

Microelectromagnets for Trapping and Manipulating Ultracold Atomic Quantum Gases
We describe the production and characterization of microelectromagnets made
for trapping and manipulating atomic ensembles. The devices consist of 7
fabricated parallel copper conductors 3 micrometer thick, 25mm long, with
widths ranging from 3 to 30 micrometer, and are produced by electroplating a
sapphire substrate. Maximum current densities in the wires up to 6.5 * 10^6 A /
cm^2 are achieved in continuous mode operation. The device operates
successfully at a base pressure of 10^-11 mbar. The microstructures permit the
realization of a variety of magnetic field configurations, and hence provide
enormous flexibility for controlling the motion and the shape of Bose-Einstein
condensates.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Analytical calculation of volumes-of-intersection for iterative, fully 3-D PET reconstruction
Use of iterative algorithms to reconstruct three-dimensional (3-D) positron emission tomography (PET) data requires the computation of the system probability matrix. The pure geometrical contribution can easily be approximated by the length-of-intersection (LOI) between lines-of-response (LOR) and individual voxels. However, more accurate geometrical projectors are desirable. Therefore, we have developed a fast method for the analytical calculation of the 3-D shape and volume of volumes-of-intersection (VOI). This method provides an alternative robust projector with a uniformly continuous sampling of the image space. The enhanced calculation effort is facilitated by using several speedup techniques. Exploiting intrinsic symmetry relations and the sparseness of the system matrix allows to create an efficiently compressed matrix which can be precomputed and completely stored in memory. In addition, a new voxel addressing scheme has been implemented. This scheme avoids time-consuming symmetry transformations of voxel addresses by using an octant-wise symmetrically ordered field of voxels. The above methods have been applied for a fully 3-D, iterative reconstruction of 3-D sinograms recorded with a Siemens/CTI ECAT HR+ PET scanner. A comparison of the performance of the reconstruction using LOI weighting and VOI weighting is presented

Diffusion in an Expanding Plasma using AdS/CFT
We consider the diffusion of a non-relativistic heavy quark of fixed mass M,
in a one-dimensionally expanding and strongly coupled plasma using the AdS/CFT
duality. The Green's function constructed around a static string embedded in a
background with a moving horizon, is identified with the noise correlation
function in a Langevin approach. The (electric) noise decorrelation is of order
1/T(\tau) while the velocity de-correlation is of order MD(\tau)/T(\tau). For
MD>1, the diffusion regime is segregated and the energy loss is Langevin-like.
The time dependent diffusion constant D(\tau) asymptotes its adiabatic limit
2/\pi\sqrt{\lambda} T(\tau) when \tau/\tau_0=(1/3\eta_0\tau_0)^3 where \eta_0
is the drag coefficient at the initial proper time \tau_0.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, minor corrections, version to appear in JHE
