    Single-photon-emitting optical centers in diamond fabricated upon Sn implantation

    The fabrication of luminescent defects in single-crystal diamond upon Sn implantation and annealing is reported. The relevant spectral features of the optical centers (emission peaks at 593.5 nm, 620.3 nm, 630.7 nm and 646.7 nm) are attributed to Sn-related defects through the correlation of their photoluminescence (PL) intensity with the implantation fluence. Single Sn-related defects were identified and characterized through the acquisition of their second-order auto-correlation emission functions, by means of Hanbury-Brown-Twiss interferometry. The investigation of their single-photon emission regime as a function of excitation laser power revealed that Sn-related defects are based on three-level systems with a 6 ns radiative decay lifetime. In a fraction of the studied centers, the observation of a blinking PL emission is indicative of the existence of a dark state. Furthermore, absorption dependence from the polarization of the excitation radiation with about 45 percent contrast was measured. This work shed light on the existence of a new optical center associated with a group-IV impurity in diamond, with similar photo-physical properties to the already well-known Si-V and Ge-V emitters, thus providing results of interest from both the fundamental and applicative points of view.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    The classification of irreducible admissible mod p representations of a p-adic GL_n

    Let F be a finite extension of Q_p. Using the mod p Satake transform, we define what it means for an irreducible admissible smooth representation of an F-split p-adic reductive group over \bar F_p to be supersingular. We then give the classification of irreducible admissible smooth GL_n(F)-representations over \bar F_p in terms of supersingular representations. As a consequence we deduce that supersingular is the same as supercuspidal. These results generalise the work of Barthel-Livne for n = 2.     Propositional update operators based on formula/literal dependence

    International audienceWe present and study a general family of belief update operators in a propositional setting. Its operators are based on formula/literal dependence, which is more fine-grained than the notion of formula/variable dependence that was proposed in the literature: formula/variable dependence is a particular case of formula/literal dependence. Our update operators are defined according to the "forget-then-conjoin" scheme: updating a belief base by an input formula consists in first forgetting in the base every literal on which the input formula has a negative influence, and then conjoining the resulting base with the input formula. The operators of our family differ by the underlying notion of formula/literal dependence, which may be defined syntactically or semantically, and which may or may not exploit further information like known persistent literals and pre-set dependencies. We argue that this allows to handle the frame problem and the ramification problem in a more appropriate way. We evaluate the update operators of our family w.r.t. two important dimensions: the logical dimension, by checking the status of the Katsuno-Mendelzon postulates for update, and the computational dimension, by identifying the complexity of a number of decision problems (including model checking, consistency and inference), both in the general case and in some restricted cases, as well as by studying compactability issues. It follows that several operators of our family are interesting alternatives to previous belief update operators

    CO2 isotope sensor using a broadband infrared source, a spectrally narrow 4.4 μm quantum cascade detector, and a Fourier spectrometer

    We report a prototype CO2 gas sensor based on a simple blackbody infrared source and a spectrally narrow quantum cascade detector (QCD). The detector absorption spectrum is centered at 2260cm−1 (4.4μm) and has a full width at half maximum of 200cm−1 (25meV). It covers strong absorption bands of two spectrally overlapping CO2 isotopomers, namely the P-branch of 12CO2 and the R-branch of 13CO2. Acquisition of the spectral information and data treatment were performed in a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. By flushing its sample compartment either with nitrogen, dry fresh air, ambient air, or human breath, we were able to determine CO2 concentrations corresponding to the different gas mixtures. Adetection limit of 500ppb was obtained in these experiment

    We introduce a limit for the strength of coupling light into the modes of solar cells. This limit depends on both a cell's thickness and its modal properties. For a cell with refractive index n and thickness d, we obtain a maximal coupling rate of 2c*sqrt(n^2-1)/d where c is speed of light. Our method can be used in the design of solar cells and in calculating their efficiency limits; besides, it can be applied to a broad variety of resonant phenomena and devices

    2OACTIVATION OF T CELLS UPON TREATMENT WITH BISPECIFIC ANTIBODIES CORRELATES WITH THE EXPRESSION OF CO-INHIBITORY RECEPTORS ON TUMOR-INFILTRATING LYMPHOCYTES IN HUMAN LUNG CANCER

    Introduction: T cell bispecific antibodies (TCB) are designed to recruit and simultaneously activate T cells against target cells such as tumor cells expressing a particular surface antigen. However, it is currently unknown how immuno-modulatory mechanisms active in the tumor microenvironment such as the expression of T cell co-inhibitory receptors may influence the therapeutic effect of TCBs. Methods: We performed a comprehensive phenotypic analysis of tumor infiltrating immune cells from lung carcinoma digests by multicolour flow cytometry. In particular, expression of T cell co-inhibitory and -stimulatory receptors was analyzed. Tumor digests were treated with catumaxomab, a TCB directed against CD3 and EpCAM. T cell activation and effector functions were assessed upon exposure to catumaxomab. Results: CD8+ T cells in lung carcinoma showed a broad heterogeneity in expression of the T cell co-inhibitory receptors PD-1, Tim-3, CTLA-4, Lag-3 and BTLA. Tumor stage and nodal status correlated with number and intensity of expressed receptors. Upon exposure to catumaxomab, a considerable heterogeneity in T cell activation among different tumors was observed. Of note, T cells expressing high levels and multiple co-inhibitory receptors were more impaired in their activation and effector functions after treatment with catumaxomab indicating a higher level of exhaustion. In a further analysis of CD8+ TIL subsets we found that BTLA+ T cells expressed more additional inhibitory receptors than all other subsets, namely PD-1, Tim-3, CTLA-4 and Lag-3, whereas only a small part of PD-1+ T cells expressed another receptor. Tim-3+ T cells usually co-expressed PD-1, but multiple receptors were found only on a low number of cells. Conclusion: In summary, our data suggest that the activity of TCBs is largely affected by the expression of T cell co-inhibitory receptors on tumor-infiltrating immune cells.     Automating Agential Reasoning: Proof-Calculi and Syntactic Decidability for STIT Logics

    This work provides proof-search algorithms and automated counter-model extraction for a class of STIT logics. With this, we answer an open problem concerning syntactic decision procedures and cut-free calculi for STIT logics. A new class of cut-free complete labelled sequent calculi G3LdmL^m_n, for multi-agent STIT with at most n-many choices, is introduced. We refine the calculi G3LdmL^m_n through the use of propagation rules and demonstrate the admissibility of their structural rules, resulting in auxiliary calculi Ldm^m_nL. In the single-agent case, we show that the refined calculi Ldm^m_nL derive theorems within a restricted class of (forestlike) sequents, allowing us to provide proof-search algorithms that decide single-agent STIT logics. We prove that the proof-search algorithms are correct and terminate

    Hepatoprotective Effects of Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) Seed Cakes during the Chicken Broiler Fattening

    The objective of this work was to verify the hepatoprotective effects of Silybum marianum seed cakes in feed mixtures used for the fattening of chicken broilers to heavier weights. Part of the experiment was to verify the preventive effect of such modified feed mixtures with the use of chlortetracycline medication. The experiment was carried out on 180 ROSS 308 broiler chickens. The chickens were fed complete feed mixtures containing 0.0% (K), 0.2% (P1 and 1.0% (P2) of Silybum marianum seed cakes. The cakes used contained 2.95% of silymarin. On the 44th day of fattening half of the chickens from every group were supplied with chlortetracycline medicated water at a dose of 2 g kg1 live weight. The selected biochemical indices were observed: cholesterol (Chol), glutamyl transferase (GMT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). On the 52nd day of the test, six chickens from each group were euthanized and their liver was taken for histological examination. Adding Silybum marianum seed cakes resulted in a non-significant decrease in the chickens' live weight and in the feed conversion in both experimental groups compared to the control group. The cholesterol levels were highly significantly lower (p p p p p p p < 0.01) the content of lipids and increased the content of glycogen in the liver of both experimental groups
