On shape variation of confined triatomics of XY2-type

    Get PDF
Harmonic confinement of initially isolated symmetric triatomic molecules can induce a transition from a bent, directed bond-type structure to helium-like angular correlation of the two equal particles. In an exactly solvable modification of the Hooke-Calogero model it is demonstrated that there is a well-defined transition between the two cases if the confinement strength is increased. Furthermore confinement is shown to reduce the system's effective diameter, which at the transition point has shrunk by 26% in comparison to the isolated syste

On the transition between directed bonding and helium-like angular correlation in a modified Hooke-Calogero model

Angular correlation in three-body systems varies between the limiting cases of slightly perturbed equi-distribution, as in the electronic ground state of helium and directed bond-type bent structure, as in the isolated water molecule. In an exactly solvable modification of the Hooke-Calogero model, it is shown that there is a sharp transition between the two cases if the particles' masses are suitably varied. In the Hooke-Calogero model attraction between different particles is harmonic and the repulsion between equal particles is given by a 1/r 2 potential. The bent structure appears in the angular distribution function if the masses of the two equal particles are below a critical value, which depends on the mass of the third particle. Above the critical value, the angular correlation is of helium type and exhibits a minimum at 0° corresponding to the Coulomb hole and a maximum at 180°. The model thus demonstrates the modulating role of mass in the transition between semi-rigid structure and more diffuse nuclear state

Disseminated Toxoplasmosis in a Patient with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

Abstract : Toxoplasmosis is a well-recognized opportunistic disease in HIV-infected individuals that is caused by the reactivation of a previous infection, primarily in the central nervous system, during profound immunodeficiency. Toxoplasmosis has been described more rarely in patients with cancer and chemotherapy. We report a case of a patient with a history of chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin lymphoma who developed pain and progressive paresthesia of the right arm 6 weeks after remission. Relapsing lymphoma was suspected, and steroid and radiation treatment were initiated, but the patient died 5 days later due to multiple organ failure. Autopsy revealed disseminated toxoplasmosis. This case illustrates that toxoplasmosis should be suspected in patients with neoplastic disease, especially lymphomas, who present with unexplained neurologic, pulmonary, or febrile symptoms during or after chemotherap

Purpose To determine the anatomical and functional outcomes of an extended 6-month intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) upload in choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). Methods A retrospective database analysis was performed applying the following inclusion criteria: (1) diagnosis of CSCR, (2) diagnosis of secondary CNV, and (3) treatment of at least six consecutive injections of anti-VEGF. Outcome measures included the change of central retinal subfield thickness, remodeling of the pigment epithelium detachments, and change in visual function. Results Twenty-one eyes of 21 patients were included. Mean patient age was 65 ± 8.3 years, and 35% of the patients (n = 8) were female. Mean disease duration before diagnosis of CNV was 48 ± 25.3 months. Mean central retinal thickness decreased from 346 ± 61 to 257 ± 57 μm (p < 0.01) after the sixth injection while mean visual acuity improved from 0.65 ± 0.35 to 0.49 ± 0.29 (logMAR; p < 0.01). Of note, an extended upload of six as opposed to three injections yielded an additional mean central retinal thickness reduction (280 ± 46 μm vs. 257 ± 57 μm, p = 0.038). Significant CNV remodeling was observed as a decrease in pigment epithelium detachment (PED) vertical (p = 0.021) and horizontal diameter (p = 0.024) as well as PED height (p < 0.01). Conclusion An extended anti-VEGF upload of six consecutive injections seems to be effective in inducing CNV remodeling and fluid resorption in CNV complicating chronic CSCR

Biomarkers in Urachal Cancer and Adenocarcinomas in the Bladder: A Comprehensive Review Supplemented by Own Data

Urachal cancer (UrC) is a rare but aggressive cancer. Due to overlapping histomorphology, discrimination of urachal from primary bladder adenocarcinomas (PBAC) and adenocarcinomas secondarily involving the bladder (particularly colorectal adenocarcinomas, CRC) can be challenging. Therefore, we aimed to give an overview of helpful (immunohistochemical) biomarkers and clinicopathological factors in addition to survival analyses and included institutional data from 12 urachal adenocarcinomas. A PubMed search yielded 319 suitable studies since 1930 in the English literature with 1984 cases of UrC including 1834 adenocarcinomas (92%) and 150 nonadenocarcinomas (8%). UrC was more common in men (63%), showed a median age at diagnosis of 50.8 years and a median tumor size of 6.0 cm. No associations were noted for overall survival and progression-free survival (PFS) and clinicopathological factors beside a favorable PFS in male patients (p = 0.047). The immunohistochemical markers found to be potentially helpful in the differential diagnostic situation are AMACR and CK34betaE12 (UrC versus CRC and PBAC), CK7, beta-Catenin and CD15 (UrC and PBAC versus CRC), and CEA and GATA3 (UrC and CRC versus PBAC). Serum markers like CEA, CA19-9 and CA125 might additionally be useful in the follow-up and monitoring of UrC

Evaluation of Functional Outcomes and OCT-Biomarkers after Intravitreal Dexamethasone Implant for Postoperative Cystoid Macular Edema in Vitrectomized Eyes

Purpose. To evaluate the efficacy of dexamethasone implant (DEX) for the treatment of postoperative cystoid macular edema (PCME) in vitrectomized eyes and to investigate visual and morphological OCT predictive factors. Methods. In this retrospective study, eyes with PCME after vitrectomy were treated with at least one DEX injection and were observed over 12 months. Indications for surgery were epiretinal membrane (ERM) or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) without macular involvement. Prior treatments, if any, were noted. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central foveal thickness (CFT), and OCT morphology including the presence of intraretinal cysts/fluid or subretinal fluid (IRF/SRF) and ellipsoid zone (EZ) continuity were evaluated. Correlations between OCT measures and visual outcomes were analyzed by the generalized estimating equations procedure. Results. Forty-six eyes with ERM and 15 eyes with RRD were enrolled. The ERM group was more likely to gain BCVA than RRD (odds ratio (OR), 1.168;95% confidence interval (CI), 1.003-1.360;p=0.046). The absence of SRF (OR, 0.860;95% CI, 0.743-0.995;p=0.043) was predictive of worse BCVA, whereas the integrity of EZ (OR, 1.094;95% CI, 0.951-1.257;p=0.209) or naive status (OR, 0.946;95% CI, 0.871-1.137, p=0.853) was not. Eyes with a worse baseline BCVA were more likely to gain >1 line after 12 months (OR, 1.485;95% CI, 1.171-1.884;p=0.001). Conclusion. The efficacy of the treatment of PCME in vitrectomized eyes seems to be affected by baseline BCVA, the absence of SRF, and the indication for surgery. Naive status appears not to play any significant role in the prediction of BCVA. This trial is registered with DRKS00018955

Limitations on the superposition principle: superselection rules in non-relativistic quantum mechanics

    Get PDF
The superposition principle is a very basic ingredient of quantum theory. What may come as a surprise to many students, and even to many practitioners of the quantum craft, is tha superposition has limitations imposed by certain requirements of the theory. The discussion of such limitations arising from the so-called superselection rules is the main purpose of this paper. Some of their principal consequences are also discussed. The univalence, mass and particle number superselection rules of non-relativistic quantum mechanics are also derived using rather simple methods.Comment: 22 pages, no figure

Theoretical study of peculiarities of unstable longitudinal shear crack growth in sub-Rayleigh and supershear regimes

    Get PDF
In the paper we present the results of the theoretical study of some fundamental aspects of mode II crack propagation in conventional sub-Rayleigh regime and transition to intersonic regime. It is shown that development of a sub-Rayleigh shear crack is determined in many respects by elastic vortex traveling ahead of the crack tip at a shear wave velocity. Formation of such a vortex helps to better understand the well-known phenomenon of acceleration of a shear crack towards the longitudinal wave velocity. Simulation results have shown that due to self-similarity of shear crack propagation the conditions of sub-Rayleigh to intersonic transition depend on dimensionless material and crack parameters. Two key dimensionless parameters are proposed

    Epistemic and Ontic Quantum Realities

Quantum theory has provoked intense discussions about its interpretation since its pioneer days. One of the few scientists who have been continuously engaged in this development from both physical and philosophical perspectives is Carl Friedrich von Weizsaecker. The questions he posed were and are inspiring for many, including the authors of this contribution. Weizsaecker developed Bohr's view of quantum theory as a theory of knowledge. We show that such an epistemic perspective can be consistently complemented by Einstein's ontically oriented position
