Stimulus Control Exerted by Remember Cues Over Processing in Pigeons’ Short-Term Memory

The aim of the present research was to provide further evidence regarding the role of remember cues on pigeon short-term memory. The first two experiments were conducted to determine whether, using a single cuing procedure, control over delayed matching-to-sample (DMTS) performance could be demonstrated by establishing a no cue condition as an implicit cue to forget. In Experiment 1, subjects were provided with training in a procedure where both forget cue (F) and no cues indicated the omission of the comparison stimuli at the end of the delay interval. In Experiment 2, naive subjects were trained with remember (R) and F trials cued from the outset. In both experiments the cuing effect was evaluated with R, F, and no cue probe trials where the cues were presented in the beginning, middle, or end of a 3 sec delay interval. The results revealed that DMTS accuracy on F cued probe trials was significantly lower than that on R cued or no cue probe trials. Performance on R cued and no cue probe trials was statistically equivalent despite both the explicit training of the no cue condition to function as an implicit cue to forget (Experiment 1), and cuing R and F trials from the outset and presenting the no cue trials only during probe testing (Experiment 2). The main aim of the third experiment was to determine whether the attenuating effect of an R cue over a previously presented F cue was the result of conditioning history. The cuing effect was evaluated in three types of single cued trials (R, F, and no cue), and two types of double cued trials (forget-remember, FR, and forget-novel, FN). The results indicated identical performance in FR and FN cued probe trials, suggesting that the novelty of presenting two cues in the retention interval may play a role in determining DMTS performance in double cued probe trials. Performance on double cued and no cue probe trials did not significantly differ from R or F cued probe trials. The evidence is contrary to the hypothesis that, as a result of previous training, a no cue functions as an implicit remember cue

Tunneling Splittings in Mn12-Acetate Single Crystals

A Landau-Zener multi-crossing method has been used to investigate the tunnel splittings in high quality Mn12_{12}-acetate single crystals in the pure quantum relaxation regime and for fields applied parallel to the magnetic easy axis. With this method several individual tunneling resonances have been studied over a broad range of time scales. The relaxation is found to be non-exponential and a distribution of tunnel splittings is inferred from the data. The distributions suggest that the inhomogeneity in the tunneling rates is due to disorder that produces a non-zero mean value of the average transverse anisotropy, such as in a solvent disorder model. Further, the effect of intermolecular dipolar interaction on the magnetic relaxation has been studied.Comment: Europhysics Letters (in press). 7 pages, including 3 figure

Motivation Indicators of Involved Commuter Students at the University of Dayton

The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study is to understand the motivations of commuter students in universities and colleges in the United States who get involved in co-curricular activities, such as recognized student organizations. This study will increase the already very minimal amount of research on commuter students on college campuses and will provide insight that has not been addressed. Understanding these motivations will help professionals better understand this population of students and be able to improve practices to better address their needs. Data was collected through in person interviews (n = 5) between the researcher and students who fit the criteria of being a commuter students and involved in at least one recognized student organization. Themes that emerged from the data were that commuter students are self-motivated to get involved and the distance of their commute does not affect their motivation.https://ecommons.udayton.edu/stander_posters/2482/thumbnail.jp

Radiochemical Separation and Measurement by Mass Spectrometry with Magnetic Sector with Inductively Coupled Plasma source (ICP-SFMS) of Plutonium Isotopes in Soil Samples

The aim of this work is twofold: to optimize the radiochemical separation of Plutonium (Pu) from soil samples, and to measure the Pu concentration. Soil samples were prepared using acid digestion assisted by microwaves; then, Pu purification was carried out with Pu AG1X8 resin. Pu isotopes were measured using Mass Spectrometry with Magnetic Sector with Inductively Coupled Plasma source (ICP-SFMS). In order to reduce the interference due to the presence of 238UH+ in the samples a desolvation system (Apex) was used. The limit of detection (LOD) of Pu was determined. The efficiency of Pu recovery from soil samples varies from 70 to 93%

Semantic Support for Scenarios to Improve Communication in Agribusiness

Organizations produce and exchange a lot of critical information to obtain good results. Systems developed in different domains are adapted to be integrated when they need to exchange information. Food and agribusiness are not the exceptions, they are pioneers in the use of massive data and collaboration. One of the biggest challenges to communicate software systems is analyzing their colliding context. Every software system relies on its own context, with its rules, dynamic, and language. It is a big effort to have a complete understanding of the composed domain. Scenarios are well-known tools to describe domains and are commonly described with text. When Scenarios are built by different stakeholders it is extremely important to review them in order to unify their description. Thus, the improved Scenarios with a unified point of view make it possible an analysis to identify the relationship between two different domains. This analysis is the key to design a mechanism to exchange information. This paper proposes a semantic definition of Scenarios and a set of queries to identify issues in the Scenarios and improve their quality. We also provide a wiki platform to implement the semantic support and the queries.Publicado en IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology book series (IFIPAICT, volume 568)
