    High Total Proton Conductivity in Large-Grained Yttrium-Doped Barium Zirconate

    Barium zirconate has attracted particular attention among candidate proton conducting electrolyte materials for fuel cells and other electrochemical applications because of its chemical stability, mechanical robustness, and high bulk proton conductivity. Development of electrochemical devices based on this material, however, has been hampered by the high resistance of grain boundaries, and, due to limited grain growth during sintering, the high number density of such boundaries. Here, we demonstrate a fabrication protocol based on the sol−gel synthesis of nanocrystalline precursor materials and reactive sintering that results in large-grained, polycrystalline BaZr_(0.8)Y_(0.2O3−δ) of total high conductivity, 1 × 10^(−2) Scm^(−1) at 450 °C. The detrimental role of grain boundaries in these materials is confirmed via a comparison of the conductivities of polycrystalline samples with different grain sizes. Specifically, two samples with grain sizes differing by a factor of 2.3 display essentially identical grain interior conductivities, whereas the total grain boundary conductivities differ by a factor of 2.5−3.2, depending on the temperature (with the larger-grained material displaying higher conductivity)

    Cation non-stoichiometry in yttrium-doped barium zirconate: phase behavior, microstructure, and proton conductivity

    Recent literature indicates that cation non-stoichiometry in proton-conducting perovskite oxides (ABO_3) can strongly influence their transport properties. Here we have investigated A-site non-stoichiometry in Ba_(1−x)Zr_(0.8)Y_(0.2)O_(3−δ), a candidate electrolyte material for fuel cell and other electrochemical applications. Synthesis is performed using a chemical solution approach in which the barium deficiency is precisely controlled. The perovskite phase is tolerant to barium deficiency up to x = 0.06 as revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis, but accommodates the non-stoichiometry by incorporation of yttrium on the A-site. The dopant partitioning can explain the decrease in cell constant with increasing x, the decrease in proton conductivity (the latter as measured by a.c. impedance spectroscopy under humidified atmosphere), and the decrease in grain size in the sintered compacts. Within the single-phase region barium deficiency also has a detrimental impact on grain boundary conductivity, as a result both of the decreased grain size, leading to a higher number density of grain boundaries and of an increased per boundary resistivity. At higher values of x, a two phase system is observed, with yttria appearing as the predominant secondary phase and the barium zirconate reverting to an undoped composition. From the relative concentrations of the observed phases and their lattice constants, the ternary phase behavior at 1600 °C (the sintering temperature) is generated. Both the bulk and grain boundary conductivities are sharply lower in the two-phase system than in the single phase compositions. The control over processing conditions demonstrates that it is possible to reproducibly prepare large-grained, stoichiometric BaZr_(0.8)Y_(0.2)O_(3−δ) with a total conductivity of 1 × 10^(−2) Scm^(−1) at 450 °C, while revealing the mechanisms by which barium deficiency degrades properties

    Spectral distortions from promising single and multifield inflationary models

    Forthcoming missions probing the absolute intensity of the CMB are expected to be able to measure spectral distortions, which are deviations from its blackbody distribution. As cosmic inflation can induce spectral distortions, these experiments offer a possibility to further test the various promising inflationary proposals, whose predictions need to be carefully determined. After numerically fitting all inflationary observables to match current observations, we compute the predicted spectral distortions of various promising single and multifield inflationary models. The predictions of single-field inflationary models display deviations between 1% and 20% with respect to the standard cosmological model in the observable window, where multi-natural and axion-monodromy inflation stand out in this respect. In the case of multifield inflation, we observe a richer structure of the power spectrum, which, in the case of so-called hybrid attractors, yields spectral distortions about 100 times more intense than the standard signal. These observations open up questions about the relation among our results and other cosmological observables that are also to be probed soon.Comment: 30 pages + references, 17 figures, 6 table

    Tridimensional-Temporal-Thematic Hydroclimate Modeling of Distributed Parameters for the San Miguel River Basin

    A geographic database (GDB) for the San Miguel river basin has been built by integrating data from multiple sources for analysis and graphical representation of diverse physiographic features and hydroclimate phenomena such as rainfall, temperature, soil-evaporation and topography, among others. This database allowed us to combine digital maps and images along with thematic information and spatially- referenced vector data. Moreover, further geographical referencing and validating processes enabled us to accurately represent continuous data through discrete data structures which fit the mathematical models used in representing the physical phenomena at the study site. In this paper we discuss some significant progress on models generated for the analysis of existing records for a season with measurable rainfall at the San Miguel river basin during the period from June 1st to September 30th of 2005

    An empirical data analysis of "price runs" in daily financial indices: dynamically assessing market geometric distributional behavior

    In financial time series there are time periods in which market indices values or assets prices increase or decrease monotonically. We call those events "price runs", "elementary uninterrupted trends" or just "uninterrupted trends". In this paper we study the distribution of the duration of uninterrupted trends for the daily indices DJIA, NASDAQ, IPC and Nikkei 225 during the period of time from 10/30/1978 to 08/07/2020 and we compare the simple geometric statistical model with p = 1/2 consistent with the EMH to the empirical data. By a fitting procedure, it is found that the geometric distribution with parameter p = 1/2 provides a good model for uninterrupted trends of short and medium duration for the more mature markets; however, longest duration events still need to be statistically characterized. Estimated values of the parameter p were also obtained and confirmed by calculating the mean value of p fluctuations from empirical data. Additionally, the observed trend duration distributions for the different studied markets are compared over time by means of the Anderson-Darling (AD) test, to the expected geometric distribution with parameter p = 1/2 and to a geometric distribution with a free parameter p, making possible to assess and compare different market geometric behavior for different dates as well as to measure the fraction of time runs duration from studied markets are consistent with the geometric distribution with p = 1/2 and in parametric free way

    Development and characterization of an improved formulation of cholesteryl oleate-loaded cationic solid-lipid nanoparticles as an efficient non-viral gene delivery system

    Nanoparticle-mediated plasmid delivery is considered a useful tool to introduce foreign DNA into the cells for the purpose of DNA vaccination and/or gene therapy. Cationic solid-lipid nanoparticles (cSLNs) are considered one of the most promising non-viral vectors for nucleic acid delivery. Based on the idea that the optimization of the components is required to improve transfection efficiency, the present study aimed to formulate and characterize cholesteryl oleate-containing solid-lipid nanoparticles (CO-SLNs) incorporating protamine (P) to condense DNA to produce P:DNA:CO-SLN complexes as non-viral vectors for gene delivery with reduced cytotoxicity and high cellular uptake efficiency. For this purpose, CO-SLNs were used to prepare DNA complexes with and without protamine as DNA condenser and nuclear transfer enhancer. The main physicochemical characteristics, binding capabilities, cytotoxicity and cellular uptake of these novel CO-SLNs were analyzed. Positively charged spherical P:DNA:CO-SLN complexes with a particle size ranging from 330.1 ± 14.8 nm to 347.0 ± 18.5 nm were obtained. Positive results were obtained in the DNase I protection assay with a protective effect of the genetic material and 100% loading efficiency was achieved at a P:DNA:CO-SLN ratio of 2:1:7. Transfection studies in human embryonic kidney (HEK293T) cells showed the versatility of adding protamine to efficiently transfect cells, widening the potential applications of CO-SLN-based vectors, since the incorporation of protamine induced almost a 200-fold increase in the transfection capacity of CO-SLNs without toxicity. These results indicate that CO-SLNs with protamine are a safe and effective platform for non-viral nucleic acid delivery.Fil: Limeres, María José.     Clinical use of the parasympathetic tone activity index as a measurement of postoperative analgaesia in dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy

The aim of the study was to determine the utility of the PTA index in assessing postoperative analgaesia. Material and Methods: Thirty healthy bitches of different breeds were randomly allocated into three groups for analgaesic treatment: the paracetamol group (GPARAC, n = 10) received 15 mg/kg b.w., the carprofen group (GCARP, n = 10) 4 mg/kg b.w., and the meloxicam group (GMELOX, n = 10) 0.2 mg/kg b.w. for 48 h after surgery. GPARAC was medicated orally every 8 h, while GCARP and GMELOX were medicated intravenously every 24 h. The PTA index was used to measure the analgaesia–nociception balance 1 h before surgery (baseline), and at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 36, and 48 h after, at which times evaluation on the University of Melbourne Pain Scale (UMPS) was made. Results: The baseline PTA index was 65 ± 8 for GPARAC, 65 ± 7 for GCARP, and 62 ± 5 for GMELOX. Postoperatively, it was 65 ± 9 for GPARAC, 63 ± 8 for GCARP, and 65 ± 8 for GMELOX. No statistically significant difference existed between baseline values or between values directly after treatments (P = 0.99 and P = 0.97, respectively). The PTA index showed a sensitivity of 40%, specificity of 98.46% and a negative predictive value of 99.07%. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the PTA index measures comfort and postoperative analgaesia objectively, since it showed a clinical relationship with the UMPS
