We investigate the statistical properties of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors in a random matrix ensemble with Hij∼∣i−j∣−μH_{ij}\sim |i-j|^{-\mu}. It is known that this model shows a localization-delocalization transition (LDT) as a function of the parameter μ\mu. The model is critical at μ=1\mu=1 and the eigenstates are multifractals. Based on numerical simulations we demonstrate that the spectral statistics at criticality differs from semi-Poisson statistics which is expected to be a general feature of systems exhibiting a LDT or `weak chaos'.Comment: 4 pages in PS including 5 figure

The volcanoes at Nariño department are active stratovolcanoes located from 5 to 10 Km near towns with population between 30000 and 350000 inhabitants. Thermal springs of these volcanoes are brackish, with temperatures ranging from 22 to 62°C. Two types of altered rocks were identified: acid alteration on the summit of studied volcanoes and intermediate to alkaline alteration on the low part. All thermal waters of theses volcanoes are inmature and have not established an equilibrium state in the water-rock interphase. There are twenty-one thermal springs in the department of Nariño, three of which are classified as bicarbonates; five are chlorides and another have high contents of sulphates in its waters. &nbsp

Co-expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and arginases in different human monocyte subsets. Apoptosis regulated by endogenous NO

    Get PDF
Human monocyte subsets, isolated from cultures of mononuclear cells, or freshly obtained from patients with multiple sclerosis, Graves' disease or pemphigus vulgaris, differed in phenotype, apoptotic features, mRNA levels of arginase II (A-II) and the inducible form of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Liver-type arginase I mRNA was present in all subsets. Apoptosis was followed by the expression of T cell intracellular antigen (TIA) and the simultaneous detection of DNA stainability by propidium iodine and annexin V binding. Apoptosis was practically absent both in activated CD14(++)CD33(++)DR(++)CD25(++)CD69(++)CD71(++/+) CD16(-) cells, expressing A-II mRNA and having arginase activity, but not iNOS mRNA, and in not fully mature large CD14(++)CD16(+)CD23(+)DR(++) monocytes, expressing simultaneously both mRNAs and having both enzyme activities. However, differentiated small CD14(+/++)CD16(+)CD69(+)CD25(+/-)CD71(++)CD23(+) DR(++) monocytes, expressing high levels of iNOS mRNA, exhibited apoptotic signs. Amounts of NO synthesised by monocytes co-expressing iNOS and arginase changed with the addition of arginine or an iNOS inhibitor; in that case a correlation of NO production and apoptotic features was observed. Data suggest a regulatory role for endogenous NO in apoptosis of stimulated and differentiated monocytes, and also that iNOS and A-II, when simultaneously present, could control the production of NO as a consequence of their competition for arginine

A Performance Analysis Framework for WiFi/WiMAX Heterogeneous Metropolitan Networks Based on Cross-Layer Design

The communication between network nodes within different protocol domains is often regarded simply as a black box with unknown configuration conditions in the path. We address network heterogeneity using a white box approach and focus on its interconnection processes. To achieve this purpose, a Performance Analysis Framework (PAF) is proposed which is composed of the formalization of the latter using process algebra (PA) and the corresponding teletraffic performance models. In this contribution, we target the IEEE 802.16 and IEEE 802.11 protocols. For the teletraffic models, we extend previous models for such scenario with the inclusion of the following protocol operational parameters (metrics): bit error rate (BER), packet error ratio (PER), and packet length (pl). From the framework teletraffic models, the optimal packet length (OPL), end to end throughput, delay, and packet loss are obtained. The PAF outperforms previous modeling solutions in terms of delay and throughput relative to NS3 simulation results. </jats:p

Neuropilin-2 regulates airway inflammatory responses to inhaled lipopolysaccharide

    Get PDF
Neuropilins are multifunctional receptors that play important roles in immune regulation. Neuropilin-2 (NRP2) is expressed in the lungs, but whether it regulates airway immune responses is unknown. Here, we report that Nrp2 is weakly expressed by alveolar macrophages (AMs) in the steady state but is dramatically upregulated following in vivo lipopolysaccharide (LPS) inhalation. Ex vivo treatment of human AMs with LPS also increased NRP2 mRNA expression and cell-surface display of NRP2 protein. LPS-induced Nrp2 expression in AMs was dependent upon the myeloid differentiation primary response 88 signaling pathway and the transcription factor NF-κB. In addition to upregulating display of NRP2 on the cell membrane, inhaled LPS also triggered AMs to release soluble NRP2 into the airways. Finally, myeloid-specific ablation of NRP2 resulted in increased expression of the chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (Ccl2) in the lungs and prolonged leukocyte infiltration in the airways following LPS inhalation. These findings suggest that NRP2 expression by AMs regulates LPS-induced inflammatory cell recruitment to the airways and reveal a novel role for NRP2 during innate immune responses in the lungs

Effectiveness and safety of obeticholic acid in a Southern European multicenter cohort of patients with primary biliary cholangitis and suboptimal response to ursodeoxycholic acid

    Get PDF
Background Obeticholic acid (OCA) was recently approved as the only on-label alternative for patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) with intolerance or suboptimal response to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). However, few data are available outside clinical trials. Aim To assess the effectiveness and safety of OCA in a real-world cohort of patients with non-effective UDCA therapy. Methods Open-label, prospective, real-world, multicentre study, enrolling consecutive patients who did not meet Paris II criteria, from 18 institutions in Spain and Portugal. Effectiveness was assessed by the changes in GLOBE and UK-PBC scores from baseline. POISE and Paris II criteria were evaluated after 12 months of OCA . Liver fibrosis was evaluated by FIB-4 and AST to platelet ratio index (APRI). Results One hundred and twenty patients were eligible, median time since PBC diagnosis 9.3 (4.0-13.8) years, 21.7% had cirrhosis, and 26.7% received had previous or concomitant treatment with fibrates. Seventy-eight patients completed at least 1 year of OCA. The Globe-PBC score decreased to 0.17 (95% CI 0.05 to 0.28; P = 0.005) and the UK-PBC score decreased to 0.81 (95% CI -0.19 to 1.80; P = 0.11). There was a significant decrease in alkaline phosphatase of 81.3 U/L (95% CI 42.5 to 120; P < 0.001), ALT 22.1 U/L (95% CI 10.4 to 33.8; P < 0.001) and bilirubin 0.12 mg/dL (95% CI 0 to 0.24; P = 0.044). FIB-4 and APRI remained stable. According to the POISE criteria, 29.5% (23 out of 78) achieved response. The adverse events rate was 35%; 11.67% discontinued (8.3% due to pruritus). Conclusions This study supports data from phase III trials with significant improvement of PBC-Globe continuous prognostic marker score among OCA-treated patients with good tolerability
