Finite Volume Scaling of Pseudo Nambu-Goldstone Bosons in QCD
We consider chiral perturbation theory in a finite volume and in a mixed
regime of quark masses. We take N_l light quarks near the chiral limit, in the
so-called epsilon-regime, while the remaining N_h quarks are heavier and in the
standard p-regime. We compute in this new mixed regime the finite-size scaling
of the light meson correlators in the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial
vector channels.Using the replica method, we easily extend our results to the
partially quenched theory. With the help of our results, lattice QCD
simulations with 2+1 flavors can safely investigate pion physics with very
light up and down quark masses even in the region where the pion's correlation
length overcomes the size of the space-time lattice.Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures, published versio
Adiabatic Charge Pumping through Quantum Dots in the Coulomb Blockade Regime
We investigate the influence of the Coulomb interaction on the adiabatic
pumping current through quantum dots. Using nonequilibrium Green's functions
techniques, we derive a general expression for the current based on the
instantaneous Green's function of the dot. We apply this formula to study the
dependence of the charge pumped per cycle on the time-dependent pumping
potentials. The possibility of charge quantization in the presence of a finite
Coulomb repulsion energy is investigated in the light of recent experiments.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
Measuring multipole moments of Weyl metrics by means of gyroscopes
Using the technique of Rindler and Perlick we calculate the total precession
per revolution of a gyroscope circumventing the source of Weyl metrics. We
establish thereby a link between the multipole moments of the source and an
``observable'' quantity. Special attention deserves the case of the
gamma-metric. As an extension of this result we also present the corresponding
expressions for some stationary space-times.Comment: 18 pages Latex, To appear in J.Math.Phy
Intruder States and their Local Effect on Spectral Statistics
The effect on spectral statistics and on the revival probability of intruder
states in a random background is analysed numerically and with perturbative
methods. For random coupling the intruder does not affect the GOE spectral
statistics of the background significantly, while a constant coupling causes
very strong correlations at short range with a fourth power dependence of the
spectral two-point function at the origin. The revival probability is
significantly depressed for constant coupling as compared to random coupling.Comment: 18 pages, 10 Postscript figure
Submillimeter H2O masers in water-fountain nebulae
We report the first detection of submillimeter water maser emission toward
water-fountain nebulae, which are post-AGB stars that exhibit high-velocity
water masers. Using APEX we found emission in the ortho-H2O (10_29-9_36)
transition at 321.226 GHz toward three sources: IRAS 15445-5449, IRAS
18043-2116 and IRAS 18286-0959. Similarly to the 22 GHz masers, the
submillimeter water masers are expanding with a velocity larger than that of
the OH masers, suggesting that these masers also originate in fast bipolar
outflows. In IRAS 18043-2116 and IRAS 18286-0959, which figure among the
sources with the fastest water masers, the velocity range of the 321 GHz masers
coincides with that of the 22 GHz masers, indicating that they likely coexist.
Towards IRAS 15445-5449 the submillimeter masers appear in a different velocity
range, indicating that they are tracing different regions. The intensity of the
submillimeter masers is comparable to that of the 22 GHz masers, implying that
the kinetic temperature of the region where the masers originate should be Tk >
1000 K. We propose that the passage of two shocks through the same gas can
create the conditions necessary to explain the presence of strong high-velocity
321 GHz masers coexisting with the 22 GHz masers in the same region.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. Accepted for publication in A&A Letter
Trion dynamics in coupled double quantum wells. Electron density effects
We have studied the coherent dynamics of injected electrons when they are
either free or bounded both in excitons and in trions (charged excitons). We
have considered a remotely doped asymmetric double quantum well where an excess
of free electrons and the direct created excitons generate trions. We have used
the matrix density formalism to analyze the electron dynamics for different
concentration of the three species. Calculations show a significant
modification of the free electron inter-sublevel oscillations cWe have studied
the coherent dynamics of injected electrons when they are aused by electrons
bound in excitons and trions. Based on the present calculations we propose a
method to detect trions through the emitted electromagnetic radiation or the
current density.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure
