How much does country matter in emerging economies?: Evidence from Latin America

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to examine the magnitude of country, industry and firm-specific effects for firms competing in emerging economies and also explore differences between high and low performers. The authors use ANOVA methodologies on samples from firms competing in Latin America between 1990-2006. It was found that the firm-specific effect is the most important one, and relatively equivalent in magnitude to the firm-specific effects found in developed countries. Country and industry effects are less important than the firm-specific effect. Contrary to previous studies that indicate that the country effect is relatively more important in emerging economies, the authors found that it is even less important than the industry effect, a result that has important implications for strategic management and international business theory. The source behind the strong firm-specific effects might stem from their resources and capabilities to manage and take advantage of the institutional and macroeconomic environments. Further analysis indicates that the firm-specific effect is relatively more important for firms showing high performance than for those firms showing low performance. Through these findings the authors feel that further research is needed so as to arm future managers with a more clear and comprehensive strategy when doing business in a Latin American country. The paper's findings are specific for large public corporations in Latin America. The paper allows managers to think about sources of competitive advantages in emerging economies. The paper shows that, despite weak institutional contexts and highly volatile macroeconomic environments, managers in the region should be able to obtain substantial differences in economic performances within the region. Activities needed for such differentiation might differ from those carried out in developed countries, with more emphasis on managing institutional voids and periods of economic and political cycles but the result should be the same.Fil: Diaz Hermelo, Francisco. Dust properties and distribution in dwarf galaxies

We present a study of the extinction, traced by the Balmer decrement, in HII regions in the dwarf galaxies NGC 1569 and NGC 4214. We find that the large-scale extinction around the most prominent HII regions in both galaxies forms a shell in which locally the intrinsic extinction can adopt relatively high values (AV=0.80.9A_V = 0.8 - 0.9 mag) despite the low metallicity and thus the low overall dust content. The small-scale extinction (spatial resolution \sim0.3'') shows fluctuations that are most likely due to variations in the dust distribution. We compare the distribution of the extinction to that of the dust emission, traced by Spitzer emission at 8 and 24 \mi, and to the emission of cold dust at 850 \mi. We find in general a good agreement between all tracers, expect for the 850 \mi emission in NGC 4214 which is more extended than the extinction and the other emissions. Whereas in NGC 1569 the dust emission at all wavelengths is very similar, NGC 4214 shows spatial variations in the 24-to-850 \mi ratio. We furthermore compared the 24 \mi and the extinction-corrected Halpha emission from HII regions in a sample of galaxies with a wide range of metallicities and found a good correlation between both emissions, independent of metallicity. We suggest that this lack of dependence on metallicity might be due to the formation of dust shells with a relatively constant opacity, like the ones observed here, around ionizing stars.Comment: 5 pages, to appear in proceeding of IAU Symposition 255 "Low-metallicity star formation", ed. The state of OAI-PMH repositories in Canadian Universities

This article presents a study of the current state of Universities Institutional Repositories (UIRs) in Canada. UIRs are vital to sharing information and documents, mainly Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETDs), and theoretically allow anyone, anywhere, to access the documents contained within the repository. Despite calls for consistent and shareable metadata in these repositories, our literature review shows inconsistencies in UIRs, including incorrect use of metadata fields and the omission of crucial information, rendering the systematic analysis of UIR complex. Nonetheless, we collected the data of 57 Canadian UIRs with the aim of analyzing Canadian data and to assess the quality of its UIRs. This was surprisingly difficult due to the lack of information about the UIRs, and we attempt to ease future collection efforts by organizing vital information which are difficult to find, starting from addresses of UIRs. We furthermore present and analyze the main characteristics of the UIRs we managed to collect, using this dataset to create recommendations for future practitioners.Comment: Published at DCMI -- International conference on dublin core and metadata applications, 202

La Educación Sexual Integral en el aula: literatura y disidencia sexual desde una experiencia docente

    Get PDF

Single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry using ammonia reaction gas as a reliable and free-interference determination of metallic nanoparticles

    Get PDF
Intensive production of nanomaterials, especially metallic nanoparticles (MNPs), and their release into the environment pose several risks for humans and ecosystem health. Consequently, high-efficiency analytical methodologies are required for control and characterization of these emerging pollutants. Single-particle inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) is a promising technique which allows the determination and characterization of MNPs. However, several elements or isotopes are hampered by spectral interferences, and dynamic-reaction cell (DRC) technology is becoming a useful tool for free interference determination by ICP-MS. DRC-based SP-ICP-MS methods using ammonia as a reaction gas (either on-mass approach or mass-shift approaches) have been developed for determining titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs), copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs), copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs), and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The effects of parameters such as ammonia flow rate and dwell time on the peak width (NP transient signal in SP-ICP-MS) were comprehensively studied. Influence of NP size and nature were also investigateThe authors wish to acknowledge the financial support of the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (INNOVANANO projects, reference RT2018-099222-B-100), and the Xunta de Galicia (Grupo de Referencia Competitiva, grant number ED431C2018/19)S

Exploiting dynamic reaction cell technology for removal of spectral interferences in the assessment of Ag, Cu, Ti, and Zn by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

    Get PDF
Analytical methods based on dynamic-reaction cell (DRC) technology using ammonia as a reaction gas have been developed for the determination of ultra-trace Ti, Zn, Cu and Ag by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Challenging spectral interferences from complex matrices were demonstrated to be overcome by DRC, and several DRC approaches (on-mass and mass-shift) using ammonium (NH3) as a reaction gas were assessed and compared to the standard or “vented” mode analysis. Ammonium cluster ions were generated for Ti, Cu, Zn, and Ag (mass shift approach). The on-mass approach was also explored to take advantage of collisional focusing phenomena. In addition, DRC operating conditions were optimised by modifying NH3 gas flow rate and rejection parameter q (RPq). The optimised conditions were applied to show the usefulness of either on-mass or mass-shift approaches when removing Ca and P interferences. Finally, the sensitivity of all measurement modes was studied and excellent limits of detection (at few ng L−1 levels) were assessedThe authors wish to acknowledge the financial support of the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Gobierno de España (project INNOVANANO, reference RT2018-099222-B-100), and the Xunta de Galicia (Grupo de Referencia Competitiva, grant number ED431C2018/19)S
