Multiphoton Bloch-Siegert shifts and level-splittings in spin-one systems
We consider a spin-boson model in which a spin 1 system is coupled to an
oscillator. A unitary transformation is applied which allows a separation of
terms responsible for the Bloch-Siegert shift, and terms responsible for the
level splittings at anticrossings associated with Bloch-Siegert resonances.
When the oscillator is highly excited, the system can maintain resonance for
sequential multiphoton transitions. At lower levels of excitation, resonance
cannot be maintained because energy exchange with the oscillator changes the
level shift. An estimate for the critical excitation level of the oscillator is

Coma imaging of comet P/Brorsen-Metcalf at Calar Alto in late July to mid August 1989
Comet P/Brorsen-Metcalf was observed on 1989/07/28+30 and on 1989/08/04+12(+14) with the 3.5 m telescope and the 0.8 m Schmidt camera at Calar Alto/Spain. The images exhibit a narrow plasma tail pointing into anti-solar direction. On 1989/07/30 a triple tail was found which can be interpreted as tail ray event. The coma isophotes show prominent asymmetries with the nucleus located on the tailward side of the isophote foci and with a slightly higher brightness in the Northern Hemisphere of the coma. A strong curved jet feature was detected in the coma on 1989/07/30. The jet extended at least 30,000 km into the sunward coma hemisphere. The rotation period of about 1.3 days, estimated from the curvature of the coma jet, needs verification by other observations
Intra-uterine fetal demise caused by amniotic band syndrome after standard amniocentesis
The amniotic band syndrome represents a prime example of exogenous disruption of an otherwise normal feta I development. It may be a sequel of invasive diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis or fetal blood sampling. A 38-year-old gravida II, para II delivered a morphologically normal male stillborn at term. The pregnancy history had been unremarkable but for an early 2nd-trimester amniocentesis. Cause of the intra-uterine fetal demise was noted to be an amniotic band constricting the umbilical cord, An amniotic band is a rare but potentially fatal condition which may be induced by, e.g., invasive prenatal procedures. Such bands are not usually diagnosed prenatally; however, selected patients with augmented risk may profit from intensive ultrasound evaluation including Doppler studies. Copyright (C) 2000 S. High-order noise filtering in nontrivial quantum logic gates
Treating the effects of a time-dependent classical dephasing environment
during quantum logic operations poses a theoretical challenge, as the
application of non-commuting control operations gives rise to both dephasing
and depolarization errors that must be accounted for in order to understand
total average error rates. We develop a treatment based on effective
Hamiltonian theory that allows us to efficiently model the effect of classical
noise on nontrivial single-bit quantum logic operations composed of arbitrary
control sequences. We present a general method to calculate the
ensemble-averaged entanglement fidelity to arbitrary order in terms of noise
filter functions, and provide explicit expressions to fourth order in the noise
strength. In the weak noise limit we derive explicit filter functions for a
broad class of piecewise-constant control sequences, and use them to study the
performance of dynamically corrected gates, yielding good agreement with

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and Ectodomain Shedding of the Amyloid Precursor Protein
Background: Epidemiological studies have suggested that long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is associated with a reduced incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain these findings including increased shedding of the soluble ectodomain of the amyloid precursor protein (sAPP), which functions as a neurotrophic and neuroprotective factor in vitro and in vivo. Objective: To clarify whether NSAIDs consistently stimulate sAPP secretion. Methods: 293-EBNA cells with stable overexpression of an APP-alkaline phosphatase fusion protein (APP-AP), SH-SY5Y and PC12 cells or primary telencephalic chicken neurons were treated with ibuprofen or indomethacin. APP shedding was then determined by measuring AP activity in conditioned media, Western blot analysis with antibodies against total sAPP or specific for sAPP-alpha, or in a pulse-chase paradigm. Results: AP activity in conditioned media was not increased after NSAID treatment of 293-EBNA cells whereas it was elevated by phorbol ester. Surprisingly, ibuprofen or indomethacin treatment of SH-SY5Y and PC12 cells expressing endogenous APP did not cause changes in sAPP or sAPP-alpha secretion or downregulation of cellular APP. These findings were further corroborated in primary chicken neuronal cultures. Conclusions: Using various experimental settings, we were unable to confirm sAPP or sAPP-alpha stimulation with the NSAIDs ibuprofen and indomethacin in transfected and nontransfected cells of neuronal and nonneuronal origin. Computer simulation of crystallization kinetics with non-Poisson distributed nuclei
The influence of non-uniform distribution of nuclei on crystallization
kinetics of amorphous materials is investigated. This case cannot be described
by the well-known Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) equation, which is only valid under
the assumption of a spatially homogeneous nucleation probability. The results
of computer simulations of crystallization kinetics with nuclei distributed
according to a cluster and a hardcore distribution are compared with JMA
kinetics. The effects of the different distributions on the so-called Avrami
exponent are shown. Furthermore, we calculate the small-angle scattering
curves of the simulated structures which can be used to distinguish

Noble Gas Analysis in the Quest to Find "Regolithic" Howardites
The howardite meteorites consist of approximately 200 polymict breccias of eucrite (basaltic) and diogenite (orthopyroxenitic) material (collectively, the HED group) that originate from the asteroid belt. Infrared reflectance spectroscopy of asteroids and laboratory studies of HEDs have indicated that the asteroid 4-Vesta is the likely parent body, and the partially-demolished south pole may be the source region. Asteroid regolith formation processes may be responsible for a number of observed petrological features including impact melt clasts, reworked clasts and mosaisicm. We have identified such features in a study of 30 howardites and polymict eucrites, and developed a regolith grading scheme based on petrology. However, the true regolithic nature of the howardite suite is not well defined, and previous research has suggested correlations between Ni contents of 300 - 1200 micron / g, a minimal variation in Al2O3 content around 8-9 wt% and the presence of solar wind noble gases are key hallmarks of an ancient regolith on Vesta . Through combined petrological, compositional and noble gas research, we aim to better understand howardite petrological diversity, regolith formation processes on parent asteroids, and to establish what defines a truly "regolithic" howardite. Our research will play an integral part in the interpretation of data gathered by the Dawn mission. Here we report the preliminary results from our noble gas analyses of four howardites: LEW 85313, EET 99408, MET 96500 and PCA 02066. Bulk major element compositional data have been collected, further petrological data for the HED group are reported by our colleagues, whilst trace-element analyses are underway.
