Developing communication skills in deaf primary school pupils: Introducing and evaluating the smiLE approach
Many profoundly deaf signers have difficulty communicating with hearing people. This article describes a therapy called ‘Strategies and Measurable Interaction in Live English’ (smiLE; Schamroth and Threadgill, 2007a), an approach used to teach deaf children skills to become successful communicators in real-life situations. This study evaluates the effectiveness of smiLE in helping deaf pupils develop their ability to make successful requests in a specific communication situation and whether this generalized to another communication situation. Sixteen severely and profoundly deaf primary school pupils (7.2—11.0 years old) received an 11-week programme of therapy. Their performances in a trained and an untrained communication situation were compared pre- and post-therapy. In the trained task, the pupils’ interactions improved significantly. No differences were found in the untrained task, suggesting that the learnt skills did not generalize. Anecdotal findings suggest that some carry-over into a similar situation had occurred and that trained skills were maintained. The smiLE therapy approach is effective in providing deaf children with the communication skills and confidence to interact with English speakers in targeted situations. The lack of generalization of these skills to similar situations may be overcome by a longer therapy programme that specifically promote these skills across different situations

The result describes that the government regulation of Standard Euro2 is supported and positively responses by industry and market. In spite of this, strategic flexibility is an approach to reach industry competitive advantage in term of product development strategy

The successful launch of a space shuttle vehicle depends on the proper operation of two tail service masts (TSMs). Reliable TSM operation is assured through a comprehensive design, development, and testing program. The results of the concept verification test (CVT) and the resulting impact on prototype TSM design are presented. The design criteria are outlined, and the proposed prototype TSM tests are described

Constructing an online test framework, using the example of a sign language receptive skills test
This paper presents the features of an online test framework for a receptive skills test that has been adapted, based on a British template, into different sign languages. The online test includes features that meet the needs of the different sign language versions. Features such as usability of the test, automatic saving of scores, and score reporting have been implemented. The background information of the children and the test results are saved in a secure databank. When consent has been granted, these data can be used for cross-linguistic research in the future. This will not only help us to broaden our understanding of deaf children’s sign language development, but will also help us to further improve sign language testing. Furthermore, implications for research and practice will be discussed
Deformation of Silica Aerogel During Fluid Adsorption
Aerogels are very compliant materials - even small stresses can lead to large
deformations. In this paper we present measurements of the linear deformation
of high porosity aerogels during adsorption of low surface tension fluids,
performed using a Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT). We show that
the degree of deformation of the aerogel during capillary condensation scales
with the surface tension, and extract the bulk modulus of the gel from the
data. Furthermore we suggest limits on safe temperatures for filling and

EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE FILTER MEDIA FOR THE ROTARY MICROFILTER
The Savannah River Site is currently developing and testing several processes to treat high level radioactive liquid waste. Each of these processes has a solid-liquid separation process that limits its throughput. Savannah River National Laboratory researchers identified and tested the rotary microfilter as a technology to increase solid-liquid separation throughput. The authors believe the rotary microfilter throughput can be improved by using a better filter membrane. Previous testing showed that asymmetric filters composed of a ceramic membrane on top of a stainless steel support produced higher filter flux than 100% stainless steel symmetric filters in crossflow filter tests. Savannah River National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are working together to develop asymmetric ceramic ? stainless steel composite filters and asymmetric 100% stainless steel filters to improve the throughput of the rotary microfilter. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Inorganic Membrane Group fabricated samples of alternative filter membranes. In addition, Savannah River National Laboratory obtained samples of filter membranes from Pall, Porvair, and SpinTek. They tested these samples in a static test cell with feed slurries containing monosodium titanate and simulated sludge
