Farrowing accommodation for organic pigs

Newborn piglets in organic farrowing pens have a lower survival rate than in conventional farrowing pens. This difference is mainly caused by housing the sow loose compared to crated and by climatic effects of the outdoor temperature. Organic lactating sows should have at least 7.5 m² indoor area with straw and a 2.5 m² outdoor run. The aim of the project was to increase piglet survival in order to improve animal welfare as well as the profitability of organic farms. In the experiment we compared survival and behaviour in 3 pen types: type 1 with outdoor run, type 2 with an indoor run and a higher proportion of solid floor and type 3 without run. Data was analysed with Analysis of Variance using parity and liveborn piglets as covariables. Results of 131 litters in total showed 9.6a, 10.8b and 9.4a (p=0.05) weaned piglets per litter for pen type 1, 2 and 3. Fouling scores indicating dunging behaviour in the indoor lying area showed 13a, 21b and 19b (p=0.04) for pen types 1, 2 and 3. We found a tendency that litters with high survival rates used the separate piglet nest sooner for lying than the litters with low survival rates. Climatic conditions seemed to be crucial for the vitality and survival of the newborn piglets. The better climatic conditions combined with the higher proportion of solid floor resulted in a higher survival rate of the piglets. These results are currently used in a second experiment focussing on extra heating around farrowing and solid floor proportion in a new farrowing accommodation

The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) and ABS-CBN through the Prisms of Herman and Chomsky's "Propaganda Model": Duterte's Tirade against Media and vice versa

This paper is an attempt to localize Herman and Chomsky’s analysis of the commercial media and use this concept to fit in the Philippine media climate. Through the propaganda model, they introduced the five interrelated media filters which made possible the “manufacture of consent.” By consent, Herman and Chomsky meant that the mass communication media can be a powerful tool to manufacture ideology and to influence a wider public to believe in a capitalistic propaganda. Thus, they call their theory the “propaganda model” referring to the capitalist media structure and its underlying political function. Herman and Chomsky’s analysis has been centered upon the US media, however, they also believed that the model is also true in other parts of the world as the media conglomeration is also found all around the globe. In the Philippines, media conglomeration is not an alien concept especially in the presence of a giant media outlet, such as, ABS-CBN. In this essay, the authors claim that the propaganda model is also observed even in the less obvious corporate media in the country, disguised as an independent media entity but like a chameleon, it camouflages into an invisible creature leaving predators without any clue. Hence, the reason to analyze and scrutinize a highly reputable news organization in the country, namely, the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) in relation to their portrayal of the Duterte presidency

In Search of the Regional Diversification of Latin: Some Methodological Considerations in Employing the Inscriptional Evidence.

The aim of the project entitled “Computerized Historical Linguistic Database of Latin Inscriptions of the Imperial Age” (http://lldb.elte.hu) is to develop and digitally publish a fundamental computerized historical linguistic database that incorporates and manages the Vulgar Latin material of the Latin inscriptions from the European provinces of the Roman Empire. In my paper, however, I do not present the Database (as this has already been done, in Adamik 2009), but instead I consider only the methodology of extracting regional variations from inscriptions, with reference to Adams 2007. In connection with this I will show that the methodology recommended by Adams 2007 does not really work whereas that established by Herman (meaning the last version, in Herman 2000a) is the most efficient, and yields a solid basis for building up the new Database

ANALISIS DAN PENANGANAN TITIK RAWAN KECELAKAAN LALU LINTAS (BLACK SPOT) (STUDI KASUS JALAN NASIONAL LINTAS TIMUR PROVINSI ACEH DI KABUPATEN ACEH UTARA)

Jalan nasional pada lintas timur memiliki nilai yang sangat strategis dalam mendukung perkembangan dan pertumbuhan ekonomi di Provinsi Aceh. Pada jalan nasional lintas timur di Kabupaten Aceh Utara terdapat beberapa lokasi yang menjadi lokasi titik rawan kecelakaan. Penelitian dilakukan pada ruas jalan nasional lintas timur yaitu tikungan Kr. Mane, tikungan depan Perusahaan Pupuk Iskandar Muda, tikungan Jembatan Panton Labu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik dan penyebab kecelakaan lalu lintas dengan mengidentifikasi serta memberi usulan penanganan untuk mengurangi kecelakaan lalu lintas. Studi ini menggunakan beberapa data yang dikumpulkan yaitu data primer berupa data kuesioner, pengamatan di lapangan dan data sekunder yang diperoleh dari instansi seperti Dinas Bina Marga, Kepolisian dan Badan Pusat Statistik Aceh Utara. Data tersebut dianalisis dengan menggunakan program Microsoft Excel. Hasil dari penelitian bahwa kondisi geometrik di tikungan Kr. Mane mempunyai tipe jalan 2 lajur 2 arah tidak terbagi (2/2 UD) dengan lebar lajur 2,0 x 3,5 m dan lebar bahu 2,0 m dan berdasarkan data kuesioner didapatkan bahwa faktor penyebab terjadinya kecelakaan lalu lintas yaitu kecepatan tinggi sebanyak 34 responden atau 34% dengan usulan penanganan pengaturan batas kecepatan melalui rambu batas kecepatan. Tikungan depan Perusahaan Pupuk Iskandar Muda mempunyai tipe jalan 2 lajur 2 arah tidak terbagi (2/2 UD) dengan lebar lajur 2,0 x 8,0 m dan lebar bahu 0,5 m dan berdasarkan data kuesioner didapatkan bahwa faktor penyebab terjadinya kecelakaan lalu lintas yaitu kecepatan tinggi sebanyak 44 responden atau 44% dengan usulan penanganan pengaturan batas kecepatan melalui rambu batas kecepatan. Tikungan Jembatan Panton Labu mempunyai tipe jalan 2 lajur 2 arah tidak terbagi (2/2 UD) dengan lebar lajur 2,0 x 3,8 m dan lebar bahu 2,0 m dan berdasarkan data kuesioner didapatkan bahwa faktor penyebab terjadinya kecelakaan lalu lintas yaitu jarak pandang buruk pada tikungan sebanyak 33 responden atau 33% dengan usulan penanganan perbaikan alinyemen jalan.
