The film archive as a polyphonic network – a montage on the Mediateca Onshore project

It’s not easy to describe the Mediateca Onshore project as it is growing over the years, uniting an ever-wider variety of initiatives and sub-projects: It is a work in process in which numerous actors have participated since its inception. Here, text passages from the website and two previously published texts by Filipa César and Tobias Hering form a kind of montage. Montage, in the sense of a multiplicity of voices bringing together the various text forms and perspectives of the authors and other participating actors, seems a most appropriate way to present the project and reflect its character. Filipa César and Tobias Hering are key players in and co-founders of Mediateca Onshore. Tobias Hering’s text “Before ʹSix Years Afterʹ. Notes on the re-emergence of a film archive in Guinea Bissau” (first published in 2012, republished with annotations in 2014), which frames the montage, is based on conversations with Filipa César. On that level, but not only, it is connected to César’s “A Grin Without Marker” (2016) the other text used in the montage

4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table.-- PMID: 16488897 [PubMed].The most recent report from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provided compelling evidence on the effect of human release of greenhouse gases from fossil fuels and deforestation on the global climate change.1 The IPCC estimate that since the mid-19th century there has been an increase in average temperature of 0.6ºC, most of this increase occurring at the end of 20th century. In addition, it provides evidence of changes in the patterns of precipitation, ridification, and humidity. Events occurring since the publication of the IPCC report in 2001 have added substantial new evidence. The average concentration of carbon dioxide has reached 375 p.p.m. (almost 100 p.p.m. above the interglacial levels) (Figure 1); polar and alpine ice is melting at faster rates than expected2 and mean sea level has been observed to rise by ~30 cm during the 20th century.3 Circumpolar winds are accelerating, probably intensifying the El Nin˜ o/Southern oscillation with increasing flows in Southern Asia, South-east Africa, South-east USA, or Central America and a large increase in the number of hurricanes reaching categories 4–5 on the Saffir–Simpson scale has occurred in the last 15 years.4 The IPCC projections forecast rises in temperature between 1.4 and 5.8ºC by 2100, elevation in mean sea level of 9–88 cm,1 and increases in heatwave frequency of 25–31%.Peer reviewe

Investigating the association between occupational exposure to asbestos and ovarian carcinoma: results from a pilot study in Germany

Background The aim of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of a large-scale epidemiologic investigation elucidating the quantitative association between occupational exposure to asbestos and ovarian cancer in former German asbestos workers. Methods Between December 2017 and May 2018, a random sample of one thousand insured woman registered at the health service of a German trade association as formerly occupationally exposed to asbestos were invited to participate in a pilot study. Participation included a phone interview using a standardised questionnaire. The feasibility of the project was evaluated using a priori defined criteria. They included response, number of cases, eligibility of the questionnaire data for exact estimation of asbestos fibre-years, and availability of relevant medical documentation (imaging procedures, medical reports, and histologic materials). Results The response (17%) was clearly below the intended number of 60%. With six tumour suspects, of which two could be confirmed by medical documents, the number of cases was within the expected range of two to eleven cases. Exact asbestos fibre-year estimations could be performed for 29% of all interviewees, but only for one suspected case. Medical documentation could be collected for only few participants, while no histology reports could be obtained for all cases. Thus, only the feasibility criterion of the expected number of cases was fulfilled. Conclusion The results of the pilot study indicate that the planned project is feasible only to a very limited extent. For further planning of the study, measures to improve recruitment of participants are necessary

Heterogeneous Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein K Interacts with Abi-1 at Postsynaptic Sites and Modulates Dendritic Spine Morphology

BACKGROUND: Abelson-interacting protein 1 (Abi-1) plays an important role for dendritic branching and synapse formation in the central nervous system. It is localized at the postsynaptic density (PSD) and rapidly translocates to the nucleus upon synaptic stimulation. At PSDs Abi-1 is in a complex with several other proteins including WASP/WAVE or cortactin thereby regulating the actin cytoskeleton via the Arp 2/3 complex. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We identified heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNPK), a 65 kDa ssDNA/RNA-binding-protein that is involved in multiple intracellular signaling cascades, as a binding partner of Abi-1 at postsynaptic sites. The interaction with the Abi-1 SH3 domain is mediated by the hnRNPK-interaction (KI) domain. We further show that during brain development, hnRNPK expression becomes more and more restricted to granule cells of the cerebellum and hippocampal neurons where it localizes in the cell nucleus as well as in the spine/dendritic compartment. The downregulation of hnRNPK in cultured hippocampal neurons by RNAi results in an enlarged dendritic tree and a significant increase in filopodia formation. This is accompanied by a decrease in the number of mature synapses. Both effects therefore mimic the neuronal morphology after downregulation of Abi-1 mRNA in neurons. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate a novel interplay between hnRNPK and Abi-1 in the nucleus and at synaptic sites and show obvious similarities regarding both protein knockdown phenotypes. This indicates that hnRNPK and Abi-1 act synergistic in a multiprotein complex that regulates the crucial balance between filopodia formation and synaptic maturation in neurons

Hyperbolicity of varieties of log general type

These notes provide an overview of various notions of hyperbolicity for varieties of log general type from the viewpoint of both arithmetic and birational geometry. The main results are based on our paper entitled "Hyperbolicity and uniformity of varieties of log general type." They are expanded notes from a minicourse the authors gave as part of the Geometry and arithmetic of orbifolds workshop at UQ\'AM.Comment: Addressed some inaccuracies and typos pointed out by the referees and some readers. Slight change of title. To appear in CRM short courses (Arithmetic Geometry of Logarithmic Pairs and Hyperbolicity of Moduli Spaces: Hyperbolicity in Montr\'eal
