    Fishes of the Strawberry River System of Northcentral Arkansas

    A survey of the fishes of the Strawberry River in northcentral Arkansas was made between August 1967 and November 1973. Field collections, literature records and museum specimens showed the ichthyofauna of the Strawberry River to be made up of 95 species distributed among 17 families. Two erroneous records are deleted. One subspecies, Etheostoma spectabile fragi,, is endemic to the river. Records of Notropis fumeus, Etheostotna nigrum, Etheostoma proeliare and Percina sciera represent extensions of previously known ranges within the state

    Oscillator strengths for OII ions

    Oscillator strengths between various doublet states of OII ions are calculated in which extensive multi-configuration wave functions are used. The lower levels for the transitions are of the 2p(3) D(2)o and 2p(3) 2po states, and the upper levels are 2p(4), 3s, and 3d states. The results, which are estimated to have errors of less than 10% for individual transitions, agree quite well with the beam foil experiments, as well as with the calculations by use of the non-closed shell many electron theory (NCMET). The agreement with the rocket measurements is also good except for the 538/581 A pair, in which the 538 A line is believed to be blend with the other stronger quartet line. However, a comparison with the recent branching ratio measurement indicates that discrepances between the present calculation and th experiment do exist for certain transistions

    Distinct forms of the ß subunit of GTP-binding regulatory proteins identified by molecular cloning

    Two distinct β subunits of guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins have been identified by cDNA cloning and are referred to as β 1 and β 2 subunits. The bovine transducin β subunit (β 1) has been cloned previously. We have now isolated and analyzed cDNA clones that encode the β 2 subunit from bovine adrenal, bovine brain, and a human myeloid leukemia cell line, HL-60. The 340-residue Mr 37,329 β 2 protein is 90% identical with β 1 in predicted amino acid sequence, and it is also organized as a series of repetitive homologous segments. The major mRNA that encodes the bovine β 2 subunit is 1.7 kilobases in length. It is expreβed at lower levels than β 1 subunit mRNA in all tiβues examined. The β 1 and β 2 meβages are expreβed in cloned human cell lines. Hybridization of cDNA probes to bovine DNA showed that β 1 and β 2 are encoded by separate genes. The amino acid sequences for the bovine and human β 2 subunit are identical, as are the amino acid sequences for the bovine and human β 1 subunit. This evolutionary conservation suggests that the two β subunits have different roles in the signal transduction process

    During the cooperative convective precipitation experiment, eight times were selected as VISSR atmospheric sounder (VAS) observation periods. A synoptic analysis of the surface and the 850, 700, 500, 300, and 200 maps for those eight periods. The satellite and radar data for those periods are included with the analyses. There were five rawinsonde stations in eastern Montana which made extra soundings for the VAS periods

    Gz, a guanine nucleotide-binding protein with unique biochemical properties

    Cloning of a complementary DNA (cDNA) for Gz alpha, a newly appreciated member of the family of guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins (G proteins), has allowed preparation of specific antisera to identify the protein in tissues and to assay it during purification from bovine brain. Additionally, expression of the cDNA in Escherichia coli has resulted in the production and purification of the recombinant protein. Purification of Gz from bovine brain is tedious, and only small quantities of protein have been obtained. The protein copurifies with the beta gamma subunit complex common to other G proteins; another 26- kDa GTP-binding protein is also present in these preparations. The purified protein could not serve as a substrate for NAD-dependent ADP- ribosylation catalyzed by either pertussis toxin or cholera toxin. Purification of recombinant Gz alpha (rGz alpha) from E. coli is simple, and quantities of homogeneous protein sufficient for biochemical analysis are obtained. Purified rGz alpha has several properties that distinguish it from other G protein alpha subunit polypeptides. These include a very slow rate of guanine nucleotide exchange (k = 0.02 min^-1), which is reduced greater than 20-fold in the presence of mM concentrations of Mg2+. In addition, the rate of the intrinsic GTPase activity of Gz alpha is extremely slow. The hydrolysis rate (kcat) for rGz alpha at 30 degrees C is 0.05 min^-1, or 200-fold slower than that determined for other G protein alpha subunits. rGz alpha can interact with bovine brain beta gamma but does not serve as a substrate for ADP-ribosylation catalyzed by either pertussis toxin or cholera toxin. These studies suggest that Gz may play a role in signal transduction pathways that are mechanistically distinct from those controlled by the other members of the G protein family

    Status Survey of the Arkansas Endemic Crayfish, Fallicambarus gilpini Hobbs and Robinson

    Fieldwork was conducted during 2002-2003 on the rare, Arkansas endemic crayfish, Fallicambarus gilpini Hobbs and Robison. Collections at 87 localities revealed this crayfish at 8 sites, all located in southeastern Arkansas in Jefferson and Cleveland counties which significantly expands its known range. Fallicambarus gilpini was generally found inhabiting roadside ditches and areas of standing water where it was always taken from upslope areas away from the static water. A sex ratio of 1:1.3 males to females was determined for this species. Ovigerous females were collected from burrows on 20 March 2003. A conservation status of threatened is recommended for this crayfish species

    Phase-field simulations of viscous fingering in shear-thinning fluids

    A phase-field model for the Hele-Shaw flow of non-Newtonian fluids is developed. It extends a previous model for Newtonian fluids to a wide range of shear-dependent fluids. The model is applied to perform simulations of viscous fingering in shear- thinning fluids, and it is found to be capable of describing the complete crossover from the Newtonian regime at low shear rate to the strongly shear-thinning regime at high shear rate. The width selection of a single steady-state finger is studied in detail for a 2-plateaux shear-thinning law (Carreau law) in both its weakly and strongly shear-thinning limits, and the results are related to previous analyses. In the strongly shear-thinning regime a rescaling is found for power-law (Ostwald-de-Waehle) fluids that allows for a direct comparison between simulations and experiments without any adjustable parameters, and good agreement is obtained
