Probabilistic Combination of Noisy Points and Planes for RGB-D Odometry

This work proposes a visual odometry method that combines points and plane primitives, extracted from a noisy depth camera. Depth measurement uncertainty is modelled and propagated through the extraction of geometric primitives to the frame-to-frame motion estimation, where pose is optimized by weighting the residuals of 3D point and planes matches, according to their uncertainties. Results on an RGB-D dataset show that the combination of points and planes, through the proposed method, is able to perform well in poorly textured environments, where point-based odometry is bound to fail.Comment: Accepted to TAROS 201

Implementation Science and Fidelity Measurement: A Test of the 3-5-7 Model™

Children and youths engaged with the child welfare system can experience grief and loss as a result of trauma, broken relationships, and inadequate attachments. Interventionists are often challenged to implement effective strategies that help youths to reestablish trusting relationships and to promote overall psychological well-being. A 5-year federal demonstration project funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Children’s Bureau, guided by an implementation science model, sought to increase well-being in youths age 12–21 who were involved in the child welfare system. The 3-5-7 Model™, a strengths-based approach that empowers children, youths, and families to engage in grieving and integrating significant relationships, was studied. A fidelity system was created in order to test the model. Important lessons about implementation science guided the work of the demonstration project. Although definitive conclusions could not be reached, several indicators of psychological well-being were found to be associated with high levels of fidelity to the 3-5-7 ModelTM. Suggestions for future research are offered

Smart Specialisation in EU and Chile, challenges and opportunities. Towards a transcontinental policy learning dialogue methodology.

The Smart Specialisation approach is being an inspiratory driver of regional innovation not only within the European Union but beyond. This paper elaborates on the Policy Learning Dialogue: Smart Specialisation in EU and Chile which took place at the Joint Research Centre, Seville (21st November 2016). The article showcases policy reflections and outcomes derived from a fruitful discussion between practitioners of regional innovation strategies in EU and Chile, smart specialisation platform staff and experts. This policy dialogue was part of the activities carried out by the smart specialisation platform aiming at providing evidence-based support to policy makers and stakeholders of smart specialisation through common reflections focused on cooperation dynamics and joint learning.JRC.B.3-Territorial Developmen

The Caribana Parade: Storming and Issues of Power and Control

    Get PDF
The parade is the highlight of the Toronto Carnival/Caribana festival, which has become an important part of Torontos and Canadas identity; but for more than twenty years it has been affected by storming, an act of transgression in which mostly young male individuals breach fences and security along the route to participate for free in the official parade. Their interaction with the scantily clad female masqueraders produce tensions and unwanted conflicts in the space. This study assesses the dynamics of storming and its impact on various positionalities in and outside the parade. The study draws on ethnographic interviews with stormers and female masqueraders, in addition to participant observation, informal conversations and archival research to complete this analysis. Through the lens of Carnival and Performance Theory, it interrogates issues of spatialization, power relations, cultural commodification, and other factors that make the parade a site of contestation in a post-1991 era
