Management of plant health risks associated with processing of plant-based wastes: A review
The rise in international trade of plants and plant products has increased the risk of introduction and spread of plant pathogens and pests. In addition, new risks are arising from the implementation of more environmentally friendly methods of biodegradable waste disposal, such as composting and anaerobic digestion. As these disposal methods do not involve sterilisation, there is good evidence that certain plant pathogens and pests can survive these processes. The temperature/time profile of the disposal process is the most significant and easily defined factor in controlling plant pathogens and pests. In this review, the current evidence for temperature/time effects on plant pathogens and pests is summarised. The advantages and disadvantages of direct and indirect process validation for the verification of composting processes, to determine their efficacy in destroying plant pathogens and pests in biowaste, are discussed. The availability of detection technology and its appropriateness for assessing the survival of quarantine organisms is also reviewed
Flight test results for a separate surface stability augmented Beech model 99
A flight evaluation of a Beech model 99 equipped with an attitude command control system incorporating separate surface stability augmentation (SSSA) was conducted to determine whether an attitude command control system could be implemented using separate surface controls, and to determine whether the handling and ride qualities of the aircraft were improved by the SSSA attitude command system. The results of the program revealed that SSSA is a viable approach to implementing attitude command and also that SSSA has the capability of performing less demanding augmentation tasks such as yaw damping, wing leveling, and pitch damping. The program also revealed that attitude command did improve the pilot rating and ride qualities of the airplane while flying an IFR mission in turbulence. Some disadvantages of the system included the necessity of holding aileron force in a banked turn and excessive stiffness in the pitch axis
Thermal expansion in the nickel-chromium-aluminum and cobalt-chromium-aluminum systems to 1200 degrees C
Thermal expansion data were obtained on 12 Ni-Cr-Al and 9 Co-Cr-Al alloys by high temperature X-ray diffraction. The data were computer fit to an empirical thermal expansion equation developed in the study. It is shown that the fit is excellent to good, and that the expansion constants depend on phase but not on composition. Phases for the Ni-Cr-Al system and Co-Cr-Al system are given. Results indicate that only alpha Cr has an expansion constant low enough to minimize oxide spalling or coating cracking induced by thermal expansion mismatch
Trailer, labeling system, control system, and program for field implementation of computerized hole selection for layflat irrigation pipe
A system for installing and labeling lay flat irrigation pipe in flooded rice and furrow irrigated fields, and a trailer for laying a roll of pipe in an irrigated field. The trailer includes a flexible hitch assembly positioned at a first end of the trailer, wherein the hitch assembly couples the trailer to a vehicle. The trailer also includes a distribution assembly positioned at a second end of the trailer, wherein the distribution assembly includes a spindle and wherein the distribution assembly couples the roll of pipe to the trailer; and a gooseneck frame including a first end coupled to the hitch assembly and a second end coupled to the distribution assembly, with an upper member between the first end and the second end of the gooseneck, wherein the upper member of the gooseneck is elevated relative to the hitch assembly. The trailer may also include offset tandem wheels with a furrow assembly to facilitate the creation of a furrow ditch and for traversing flood irrigated levees for the purposes of installing lay-flat polyethylene pipe for irrigation. The trailer may also include an adjustable telescoping hitch to adjust to various vehicle hitch heights. The system includes a labeling system for indicating the punch size needed along the pipeline during installation. A computerized hole selection plan is developed and transferred to a microprocessor device, where sensors or a global positioning system is co-locate the device so the punch label can be applied along the pipe during installation

Spaceborne VHSIC multiprocessor system for AI applications
A multiprocessor system, under design for space-station applications, makes use of the latest generation symbolic processor and packaging technology. The result will be a compact, space-qualified system two to three orders of magnitude more powerful than present-day symbolic processing systems
Quick-look guide to the crustal dynamics project's data information system
Described are the contents of the Crustal Dynamics Project Data Information System (DIS) and instructions on the use of this facility. The main purpose of the DIS is to store all geodetic data products acquired by the Project in a central data bank and to maintain information about the archive of all Project-related data. Access and use of the DIS menu-driven system is described as well as procedures for contacting DIS staff and submitting data requests
Weak Wave Turbulence Scaling Theory for Diffusion and Relative Diffusion in Turbulent Surface Waves
We examine the applicability of the weak wave turbulence theory in explaining
experimental scaling results obtained for the diffusion and relative diffusion
of particles moving on turbulent surface waves. For capillary waves our
theoretical results are shown to be in good agreement with experimental
results, where a distinct crossover in diffusive behavior is observed at the
driving frequency. For gravity waves our results are discussed in the light of
ocean wave studies.Comment: 5 pages; for related work visit http://www.imedea.uib.es/~victo
The correlation between intelligence and size of family
This research is a study by the aid of intelligence
testing of a very significant present day phenomenon, the apparent
limitation of families by the more intelligent parents. The
future distribution of intelligence is a matter of vital importance
to the race. Investigation has borne out the view that good social
position and standard of life are correlated with intelligence.
In Great Britain and the United States of America, to take only
two countries, the problem is beginning to loom with increasing
urgency and importance, What light can be thrown on the matter
must be of interest to the biologist and sociologist. Intimately
bound up with the question is the problem of the conflicting
claims of heredity and environment, of nature and nurture, which
deeply interest the psychologist and are the intimate concern of
the educationist.THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN I.Q. AND SIZE OF FAMILY
