Why do some spotted stars become bluer as they become fainter?
Chromospherically active, spotted stars generally become redder as well as
fainter when large starspots rotate into view on the stellar disc. However, the
RS CVn system UX Ari (a triple-lined system), becomes bluer as it gets fainter.
One possible explanation is that hot, bright facular regions accompany the
cool, dark photospheric spots of the active component. The bluer flux of the
hotter, inactive component does not appear to be sufficient to explain the
observed behaviour. We have begun a search for additional chromospherically
active stars with a similar relation between colour and brightness, to
investigate whether these relations can be explained in the same way. Our
results for V711 Tau are presented here, and we conclude that the faculae

RP Process Selection for Rapid Tooling in Sand Casting
The significant cycle-time improvements and geometrical capabilities of solid freeform
fabrication systems have led to applications in sand casting industry for design verification and
tooling. The time and cost effective deployment of rapid tooling processes using rapid
prototyping technology has thus becoming an emerging area to be studied. To make full use of
the advantages of rapid prototyping processes, the factors influencing the tooling approach must
be identified and understood. This understanding is then used to develop a decision-making

U.S. Preferences for Fish and Seafood: An Evoked Set Analysis
This study used the concept of an "evoked set" to test hypotheses about the determinants of consumer preferences for seafood. Results indicate consumer preferences for seven major fish species (shrimp, lobster, catfish, cod, flounder, scallops, and salmon) are mainly a function of the consumer's geographical location and ethnicity. Consumer beliefs about fish product attributes (e.g., quality, flavor, nutrition) and product category use-experience (frequency of fish consumption) in general are not significant preference determinants, although important exceptions are noted. Generic advertising is used by fish producers to accelerate demand growth to alleviate temporary surpluses. Whether this cooperative promotional venture is profitable depends on a number of factors including industry supply response. Spot activity of the RS CVn star {\sigma} Geminorum
We model the photometry of RS CVn star Geminorum to obtain new
information on the changes of the surface starspot distribution, i.e., activity
cycles, differential rotation and active longitudes. We use the previously
published Continuous Periods Search-method (CPS) to analyse V-band differential
photometry obtained between the years 1987 and 2010 with the T3 0.4 m Automated
Telescope at the Fairborn Observatory. The CPS-method divides data into short
subsets and then models the light curves with Fourier-models of variable orders
and provides estimates of the mean magnitude, amplitude, period and light curve
minima. These light curve parameters are then analysed for signs of activity
cycles, differential rotation and active longitudes. We confirm the presence of
two previously found stable active longitudes, synchronised with the orbital
period d and find eight events where the active longitudes
are disrupted. The epochs of the primary light curve minima rotate with a
shorter period d than the orbital motion. If the
variations in the photometric rotation period were to be caused by differential
rotation, this would give a differential rotation coefficient of . The presence of two slightly different periods of active regions may
indicate a superposition of two dynamo modes, one stationary in the orbital
frame and the other one propagating in the azimuthal direction. Our estimate of
the differential rotation is much higher than previous results. However,

The minimum free-stream wind speed for initiating motion of surface material on Mars
Estimates of the minimum free-stream wind speed that is required for initiating the motion of surficial material on Mars have ranged from 30 to about 200 meters per second. Thus the best value for this quantity is not well established. Graphical comparison of much of the pertinent data taken in the laboratory and in the field on Earth provides a minimum value for the Bagnold coefficient of 0.08 and this in turn provides a minimum value for the threshold friction velocity of 1.3 meters per second for initiating motion of particulate matter on Mars at low elevations where the pressure is 7 millibars. The most appropriate value of the ratio of friction velocity to free-stream velocity for putative unstable condition appears to be 0.026. Thus the minimum free-stream wind speed for initiating motion is obtained as 50 meters per second. If the surface material on Mars, however, is less cohesive than that on earth, the minimum value may be smaller

finishing boars to evaluate the effect on nutrient digestibility, N balance, faecal volatile
fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia-N (NH3–N) emission. Dietary CP concentration was
adjusted by altering the ratio of wheat:soyabean meal. Lysine, threonine, tryptophan
and total sulphur-containing amino acids were included in all diets at concentrations
equivalent to that in the highest CP diet. All diets were formulated to provide 9.7 MJ/kg
of net energy. Urine and faeces were collected from 16 boars (4 boars per treatment)
housed in metabolism crates. Collections were performed at 72, 80 and 87 kg live weight.
NH3–N emission was measured over 10 days using a laboratory scale procedure.
Reducing the concentration of dietary CP decreased N intake (linear, P < 0.01), the
excretion of urinary N, ammoniacal N and total N (linear, P < 0.001; cubic, P < 0.001)
and the emission of NH3–N (linear, P < 0.001; cubic, P < 0.01). Total N excretion and
NH3–N emission decreased 8.7% and 10.1% per 10 g/kg reduction in dietary CP
concentration between 205.6 and 131.9 g/kg, respectively. There was no interaction
between dietary CP concentration and collection period. N balance differed between the collection periods and less NH3–N was emitted at 87 kg than at 72 kg. Decreasing
dietary CP reduced faecal VFA concentration (linear, P < 0.05) and the molar proportions
