    Soil carbon losses and estimation of erosion and decomposition by δ Carbon-13 in riparian soils under lowland rainforest transformation systems on Sumatra, Indonesia

    Indonesia´s forest is ranked among the Amazonian and the Kongo Basin as the largest tropical rainforest area worldwide. However, the country experiences a severe forest loss since the 1970s. Besides a growing population, the primary pressures are export-orientated timber production and a global commodity demand that lead to a permanent conversion from forest to agricultural areas. The roles of resulting transformation systems of tropical riparian rainforests for ecological functions have yet received little attention in scientific research. Especially C stocks in riparian zones are strongly affected by climate and land use changes that lead to changes in water regime and ground water level drops. We investigated the effects of land transformations in riparian ecosystems of Sumatra, on soil C content, stocks and decomposability. C losses in rubber and oil palm plantations and rainforests were compared and the contribution of soil erosion and organic matter mineralization was estimated. Based on δ Carbon-13 along soil depth, two processes decreasing C stocks were distinguished: erosion and mineralization of soil organic matter (SOM). Depending on the shift of the δ Carbon-13 value of SOC in the topsoil from the linear regression calculated by δ Carbon-13 value with log(SOC) in the topsoil, modification of C turnover rate in the top soil was evaluated. Erosion was estimated by the shift of the δCarbon-13 value of SOC in the subsoil under plantations. The Ah-horizons in non-riparian soils under oil palm and rubber plantations showed with 70% and 62 % a strong reduction in C content and a strong erosion: 35 ±8 cm in oil palm and 33 ±10 cm in rubber plantations. Within the riparian zones an inhomogenous spatial distribution of C content is expected, due to the trend of increasing C stocks from terrestrial through semi –terrestrial to wet conditions. By comparing decreasing δ Carbon-13 values of SOC in the topsoil to those in subsoil, a lower erosion in all transformation systems in riparian zones could be detected

    Deformation Quantization: Quantum Mechanics Lives and Works in Phase-Space

    Wigner's quasi-probability distribution function in phase-space is a special (Weyl) representation of the density matrix. It has been useful in describing quantum transport in quantum optics; nuclear physics; decoherence (eg, quantum computing); quantum chaos; "Welcher Weg" discussions; semiclassical limits. It is also of importance in signal processing. Nevertheless, a remarkable aspect of its internal logic, pioneered by Moyal, has only emerged in the last quarter-century: It furnishes a third, alternative, formulation of Quantum Mechanics, independent of the conventional Hilbert Space, or Path Integral formulations. In this logically complete and self-standing formulation, one need not choose sides--coordinate or momentum space. It works in full phase-space, accommodating the uncertainty principle.     Controlling TcT_c of Iridium films using interfacial proximity effects

    High precision calorimetry using superconducting transition edge sensors requires the use of superconducting films with a suitable TcT_c, depending on the application. To advance high-precision macrocalorimetry, we require low-TcT_c films that are easy to fabricate. A simple and effective way to suppress TcT_c of superconducting Iridium through the proximity effect is demonstrated by using Ir/Pt bilayers as well as Au/Ir/Au trilayers. While Ir/Au films fabricated by applying heat to the substrate during Ir deposition have been used in the past for superconducting sensors, we present results of TcT_c suppression on Iridium by deposition at room temperature in Au/Ir/Au trilayers and Ir/Pt bilayers in the range of \sim20-100~mK. Measurements of the relative impedance between the Ir/Pt bilayers and Au/Ir/Au trilayers fabricated show factor of \sim10 higher values in the Ir/Pt case. These new films could play a key role in the development of scalable superconducting transition edge sensors that require low-TcT_c films to minimize heat capacity and maximize energy resolution, while keeping high-yield fabrication methods.Comment: 5 journal pages, 4 figure

    On the Spectrum of Field Quadratures for a Finite Number of Photons

    The spectrum and eigenstates of any field quadrature operator restricted to a finite number NN of photons are studied, in terms of the Hermite polynomials. By (naturally) defining \textit{approximate} eigenstates, which represent highly localized wavefunctions with up to NN photons, one can arrive at an appropriate notion of limit for the spectrum of the quadrature as NN goes to infinity, in the sense that the limit coincides with the spectrum of the infinite-dimensional quadrature operator. In particular, this notion allows the spectra of truncated phase operators to tend to the complete unit circle, as one would expect. A regular structure for the zeros of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel is also shown.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure

    Modeling the transboundary risk of feed ingredients contaminated with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus

Bmc Veterinary Research, 12, 12. doi:10.1186/s12917-016-0674-zBackground: This study describes a model developed to evaluate the transboundary risk of PEDV-contaminated swine feed ingredients and the effect of two mitigation strategies during a simulated transport event from China to the US. Results: Ingredients imported to the USA from China, including organic & conventional soybeans and meal, lysine hydrochloride, D-L methionine, tryptophan, Vitamins A, D & E, choline, carriers (rice hulls, corn cobs) and feed grade tetracycline, were inoculated with PEDV. Control ingredients, and treatments (ingredients plus a liquid antimicrobial (SalCURB, Kemin Industries (LA) or a 2 % custom medium chain fatty acid blend (MCFA)) were tested. The model ran for 37 days, simulating transport of cargo from Beijing, China to Des Moines, IA, US from December 23, 2012 to January 28, 2013. To mimic conditions on land and sea, historical temperature and percent relative humidity (% RH) data were programmed into an environmental chamber which stored all containers. To evaluate PEDV viability over time, ingredients were organized into 1 of 4 batches of samples, each batch representing a specific segment of transport. Batch 1 (segment 1) simulated transport of contaminated ingredients from manufacturing plants in Beijing (day 1 post-contamination (PC)). Batch 2 (segments 1 and 2) simulated manufacturing and delivery to Shanghai, including time in Anquing terminal awaiting shipment (days 1-8 PC). Batch 3 (segments 1, 2 and 3) represented time in China, the crossing of the Pacific and entry to the US at the San Francisco, CA terminal (day 1-27 PC). Batch 4 (segments 1-4) represented the previous events, including transport to Des Moines, IA (days 1-37 PC). Across control (non-treated) ingredients, viable PEDV was detected in soybean meal (organic and conventional), Vitamin D, lysine hydrochloride and choline chloride. In contrast, viable PEDV was not detected in any samples treated with LA or MCFA. Conclusions: These results demonstrate the ability of PEDV to survive in a subset of feed ingredients using a model simulating shipment from China to the US. This is proof of concept suggesting that contaminated feed ingredients could serve as transboundary risk factors for PEDV, along with the identification of effective mitigation options
