Novel Quarters for an Odd Couple: Apollo and Dionysis in Beckett\u27s Watt and Pinget\u27s The Inquisitory.
By making the act of writing itself the subject of their works, the French New Novelists must face the questions of the source of the creative drive and the possibility of engaging the reader directly in it. The response to these conundrums advanced through example by two of the group\u27s outstanding figures, Samuel Beckett and Robert Pinget, gives a piquant twist to the traditional polarization of artistic impulses into the Apollonian (Reason) and the Dionysian (Unreason). In Watt (1953) and The Inquisitory (1962) writing, the act mitigating life\u27s suffering, springs from the union of these two apparently antithetical drives with the Dionysian elements in the ascendant. Furthermore, the fusion of the seemingly opposite compulsions to know or control and to admit to chaos or let go sweeps the reader into a maelstrom through a series of linked narrative devices and obliges him to share the creative insanity characteristic of both novelists at their best.
Alluding briefly to appropriate analogues to the Apollonian/Dionysian dichotomy in Greek myth and Nietzschean aesthetics and their relevance to prose fiction, this study deals with each novel in turn. By centering on the guiding metaphor of the house, it traces the effects on narrative structure of the clash between knowledge and doubt (represented through Cartesianism and skepticism) and the consequent treatment of time, space and plot. In conclusion, an attempt is made to assess the implications for the novels and for the reader of the ascendancy of the Dionysian element
Housing discrimination at the intersection of health condition, race and felony status
Those reintegrating into society from incarceration are faced with a stigma that prevents them from receiving basic human needs. The label of "felon" creates collateral consequences that prevent access to necessities like employment, healthcare, and housing (Pager, 2003; Kugelmass, 2016; Evans, 2018). Housing has been identified as one of the most critical necessities in the process of reentry – however, it is widely inaccessible for people with a criminal record (Garland et al., 2010; O'Brien, 2001). Health issues are also highly prevalent within the formerly incarcerated population, as reentering individuals are at significantly higher risk of having both physical illnesses and mental disorders (Pedersen, 2019; Bronson & Berzofsky, 2017). In order to live a healthy life, it is imperative to be housed due to its positive impact on both physical and mental health (Evans, 2003; Kreiger & Higgins, 2002). While it is known that housing institutions discriminate on the basis of criminal record, it is unclear whether health status or race play a role in affecting the accessibility of housing for a reentering individual (Helfgott, 1997; Thacher, 2008; Evans et al., 2019). This study uses the audit method to examine the effects of health status and race on housing outcomes. Fictitious testers, known as auditors, sent emails inquiring about rental listings to housing organizations across North Carolina. The emails that each auditor sent signal various health and racial characteristics that are used to examine potential cases of discrimination based on the amount of positive responses each received. I did not obtain evidence that suggests differential treatment on the basis of health with regards to housing outcomes. However, the results consistently suggest a racial bias in housing outcomes amongst all forms of health status.Bachelor of Art
Introduction: It's understood by cleft lip and palate (CLP) a congenital malformation that can involve the lip, palate or both, which may or may not be related to other malformations, such syndromes. The most used classification uses as reference the incisive foramen, being divided into: pre-incisive foramen, post foramen and incisive trans. There are several implications of CLP in the lives of people affected by it, which can be categorized as aesthetic, functional and emotional. Objective: To analyze the quality of life of young patients with Cleft (FLP) attending the Center for Attention to Patients with Facial Deformity (NAPADF/UFSC). Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study realized on dependecies of the orthodontic clinic of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, which is headquartered at the Center for Attention Patients with Facial Deformities (NAPADF). The target population for this study was made up of 15 young patients with CLP (GFLP), that belong to the active care of NAPADF, aged between 15 and 24 years. The control group (CG) was also composed of 15 young people, aged between 15 and 24 years without facial deformities. The data collection instrument used was the “Youth Quality of Life Instrument – Research Version” (YQOL-R). Results: The control group was composed of four members of the males (26.66%) and eleven females (73.34 %) with mean age of 20.33 years (SD 2.89) and educational level of 12,73 years (SD 2.69). The GFLP was composed of eight members of the males (53.33 %) and seven females (46.67 %) with mean age of 18.87 years (SD 3.04) and educational level of 9.80 years (SD 1.97). There were no statistically significant differences between groups for age and gender, but there was a statistically significant difference in the schooling variable (p = 0.0022). In comparing the responses to each question between the two groups was statistically significant (p=0.026) only in question 23, in which the participant is asked if he can tell their problems to their friends. Conclusion: The QOL of young patients with CLP treated at NAPADF/UFSC is similar to the QOL of young people without facial deformities. The characteristics of QOL among young patients with CLP are inherent in the age group who are, and are not specifically related to facial deformity
Using Office Referral Data to Help Understand School-Wide Discipline
Some schools looking to create and maintain a safe and supportive learning environment implement Positive Behavior Supports (PBS). Maintaining a safe and supportive school requires a solid sense of the current school climate and a continuous improvement process for measuring progress and making appropriate corrections. Schools need to be keeping track of whether a safe, supportive learning community is being provided to all students all of the time through key indicator data.
Due to the increased amount of accountability being placed upon schools and states through NCLB, there is also an increased amount of academic data collection required. One school currently implements a PBS program and continually collects data on office referrals, however, it is felt that the data is not utilized to its fullest potential.
The purpose of this thesis was to analyze one elementary school\u27s PBS data, helping them to understand the amount of useful information the data can generate about the PBS program and to plan possible future interventions. The school had collected information on office referrals for 2 school years, keeping track of the student, type of violation, location and time of referral.
Office referral data was analyzed and results were discussed in relation to information a school could use to look at PBS overall. Limitations to the data and implications for the school and school psychologists are discussed
