The Asakura-Oosawa model in the protein limit: the role of many-body interactions
We study the Asakura-Oosawa model in the "protein limit", where the
penetrable sphere radius is much greater than the hard sphere radius
. The phase behaviour and structure calculated with a full many-body
treatment show important qualitative differences when compared to a description
based on pair potentials alone. The overall effect of the many-body

Can Polymer Coils be modeled as "Soft Colloids"?
We map dilute or semi-dilute solutions of non-intersecting polymer chains
onto a fluid of ``soft'' particles interacting via a concentration dependent
effective pair potential, by inverting the pair distribution function of the
centers of mass of the initial polymer chains. A similar inversion is used to
derive an effective wall-polymer potential; these potentials are combined to
successfully reproduce the calculated exact depletion interaction induced by
non-intersecting polymers between two walls. The mapping opens up the
possibility of large-scale simulations of polymer solutions in complex

Academic Engagement in Public and Political Discourse: Proceedings from the Michigan Meeting
This report and the conference it summarizes are an examination of how we, as academics, practice our craft; how we work to make it more relevant to broader publics and responsive to pressing societal problems. In May 2015, more than 40 speakers (including 4 University Presidents) and 225 registrants attended a three day conference at the University of Michigan to focus on four key themes: (1) What is engagement and should we do it? (2) What are the ground rules for public and political engagement? (3) What models have worked, and what can we learn from them? (4) What are the obstacles to engagement, and how can they be overcome? The contents of this report are about the kinds of research we conduct, but even more, it is about the public meaning and goals of that work. Ultimately, it is about who we are as a university and what it means to be an academic in a society facing complex scientific, technological, and social challenges. Nucleocapsid Protein Zinc-Finger Mutants of Simian Immunodeficiency Virus Strain Mne Produce Virions That Are Replication Defectivein Vitroandin Vivo
AbstractAll retroviruses (except the spumaretroviruses) contain a nucleocapsid (NC) protein that encodes one or two copies of the Zn2+-finger sequence -Cys-X2-Cys-X4-His-X4-Cys-. This region has been shown to be essential for recognition and packaging of the genomic RNA during virion particle assembly. Additionally, this region has been shown to be involved in early infection events in a wide spectrum of retroviruses, including mammalian type C [e.g., murine leukemia virus (MuLV)], human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1),Rous sarcomavirus, and other retroviruses. Mutations in the two Zn2+-fingers of the NC protein of simian immunodeficiency virus strain Mne [SIV(Mne)] have been generated. The resulting virions contained the normal complement of processed viral proteins with densities indistinguishable from wild-type SIV(Mne). All of the mutants had electron micrograph morphologies similar to those of immature particles observed in wild-type preparations. RNA packaging was less affected by mutations in the NC protein of SIV(Mne) than has been observed for similar mutants in the MuLV and HIV-1 systems. Nevertheless,in vitroreplication of SIV(Mne) NC mutants was impaired to levels comparable to those observed for MuLV and HIV-1 NC mutants; replication defective NC mutants are typically 105- to 106-fold less infectious than similar levels of wild-type virus. One mutant, ΔCys33–Cys36, was also found to be noninfectiousin vivowhen mutant virus was administered intravenously to a pig-tailed macaque. NC mutations can therefore be used to generate replication defective virions for candidate vaccines in the SIV macaque model for primate lentiviral diseases
Survey strategy optimization for the Atacama Cosmology Telescope
In recent years there have been significant improvements in the sensitivity
and the angular resolution of the instruments dedicated to the observation of
the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). ACTPol is the first polarization
receiver for the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and is observing the CMB sky
with arcmin resolution over about 2000 sq. deg. Its upgrade, Advanced ACTPol
(AdvACT), will observe the CMB in five frequency bands and over a larger area
of the sky. We describe the optimization and implementation of the ACTPol and
AdvACT surveys. The selection of the observed fields is driven mainly by the
science goals, that is, small angular scale CMB measurements, B-mode
measurements and cross-correlation studies. For the ACTPol survey we have
observed patches of the southern galactic sky with low galactic foreground
emissions which were also chosen to maximize the overlap with several galaxy
surveys to allow unique cross-correlation studies. A wider field in the
northern galactic cap ensured significant additional overlap with the BOSS
spectroscopic survey. The exact shapes and footprints of the fields were
optimized to achieve uniform coverage and to obtain cross-linked maps by
observing the fields with different scan directions. We have maximized the
efficiency of the survey by implementing a close to 24 hour observing strategy,
switching between daytime and nighttime observing plans and minimizing the
telescope idle time. We describe the challenges represented by the survey
optimization for the significantly wider area observed by AdvACT, which will
observe roughly half of the low-foreground sky. The survey strategies described
here may prove useful for planning future ground-based CMB surveys, such as the

Theoretical description of phase coexistence in model C60
We have investigated the phase diagram of the Girifalco model of C60
fullerene in the framework provided by the MHNC and the SCOZA liquid state
theories, and by a Perturbation Theory (PT), for the free energy of the solid
phase. We present an extended assessment of such theories as set against a
recent Monte Carlo study of the same model [D. Costa et al, J. Chem. Phys.
118:304 (2003)]. We have compared the theoretical predictions with the
corresponding simulation results for several thermodynamic properties. Then we
have determined the phase diagram of the model, by using either the SCOZA, or
the MHNC, or the PT predictions for one of the coexisting phases, and the
simulation data for the other phase, in order to separately ascertain the
accuracy of each theory. It turns out that the overall appearance of the phase
portrait is reproduced fairly well by all theories, with remarkable accuracy as
for the melting line and the solid-vapor equilibrium. The MHNC and SCOZA
results for the liquid-vapor coexistence, as well as for the corresponding
critical points, are quite accurate. All results are discussed in terms of the
basic assumptions underlying each theory. We have selected the MHNC for the
fluid and the first-order PT for the solid phase, as the most accurate tools to
investigate the phase behavior of the model in terms of purely theoretical
approaches. The overall results appear as a robust benchmark for further
theoretical investigations on higher order C(n>60) fullerenes, as well as on
other fullerene-related materials, whose description can be based on a

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: The polarization-sensitive ACTPol instrument
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) is designed to make high angular
resolution measurements of anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background
(CMB) at millimeter wavelengths. We describe ACTPol, an upgraded receiver for
ACT, which uses feedhorn-coupled, polarization-sensitive detector arrays, a 3
degree field of view, 100 mK cryogenics with continuous cooling, and meta
material anti-reflection coatings. ACTPol comprises three arrays with separate
cryogenic optics: two arrays at a central frequency of 148 GHz and one array
operating simultaneously at both 97 GHz and 148 GHz. The combined instrument
sensitivity, angular resolution, and sky coverage are optimized for measuring
angular power spectra, clusters via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich and kinetic
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich signals, and CMB lensing due to large scale structure. The
receiver was commissioned with its first 148 GHz array in 2013, observed with
both 148 GHz arrays in 2014, and has recently completed its first full season
of operations with the full suite of three arrays. This paper provides an
overview of the design and initial performance of the receiver and related
systems
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Two-Season ACTPol Lensing Power Spectrum
We report a measurement of the power spectrum of cosmic microwave background
(CMB) lensing from two seasons of Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter
(ACTPol) CMB data. The CMB lensing power spectrum is extracted from both
temperature and polarization data using quadratic estimators. We obtain results
that are consistent with the expectation from the best-fit Planck LCDM model
over a range of multipoles L=80-2100, with an amplitude of lensing A_lens =
1.06 +/- 0.15 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (sys.) relative to Planck. Our measurement of
the CMB lensing power spectrum gives sigma_8 Omega_m^0.25 = 0.643 +/- 0.054;
including baryon acoustic oscillation scale data, we constrain the amplitude of
density fluctuations to be sigma_8 = 0.831 +/- 0.053. We also update
constraints on the neutrino mass sum. We verify our lensing measurement with a
number of null tests and systematic checks, finding no evidence of significant
systematic errors. This measurement relies on a small fraction of the ACTPol
data already taken; more precise lensing results can therefore be expected from

Detection of the pairwise kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect with BOSS DR11 and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope
We present a new measurement of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect using
data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the Baryon Oscillation
Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). Using 600 square degrees of overlapping sky area,
we evaluate the mean pairwise baryon momentum associated with the positions of
50,000 bright galaxies in the BOSS DR11 Large Scale Structure catalog. A
non-zero signal arises from the large-scale motions of halos containing the
sample galaxies. The data fits an analytical signal model well, with the
optical depth to microwave photon scattering as a free parameter determining
the overall signal amplitude. We estimate the covariance matrix of the mean
pairwise momentum as a function of galaxy separation, using microwave sky
simulations, jackknife evaluation, and bootstrap estimates. The most
conservative simulation-based errors give signal-to-noise estimates between 3.6
and 4.1 for varying galaxy luminosity cuts. We discuss how the other error
determinations can lead to higher signal-to-noise values, and consider the
impact of several possible systematic errors. Estimates of the optical depth
from the average thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal at the sample galaxy
positions are broadly consistent with those obtained from the mean pairwise
